Rush Limbaugh selection in children’s book competition causes a stir

(CNN) - Rush Limbaugh - radio host, conservative firebrand and... children's book author of the year?

The Children’s Book Council and its Every Child a Reader program released on Thursday their author-of-the-year finalists for their annual Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards.

Limbaugh is one of the four finalists, and his nomination has prompted outrage on social media, given the host’s often-incendiary nature.

Limbaugh's book is titled, "Rush Revere and The Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" – a time-traveling tale of colonial America and the latest of two books in the "Rush Revere Series" published last year by Simon & Schuster.

Limbaugh, an outspoken figure in the political world, often expresses controversial sentiments on his radio program. Recently, Limbaugh blasted Pope Francis' economic views as "pure Marxism," and, in 2012, he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control.

The Children’s Book Council issued a public letter, posted to its website and Facebook page, defending its finalist selection process following the uproar online and insisting that the author of the year finalists "are determined solely based on titles’ performances on the bestseller lists."

"Some of you have voiced concerns over the selection of finalists from bestseller lists, which you feel are potentially-manipulable indications of the success of a title. We can take this into consideration going forward, but cannot change our procedure for selecting finalists after the fact," the organization said in the letter.

The CBC letter goes on to say the kids, who will start voting next week, ultimately decide which author wins in each of the six categories, including best author. The letter goes on to assure that the organization has a procedure in place to protect against fraud and adult's voting in the contest.

"This program has never been about CBC or ECAR endorsing finalists," the letter says.

Limbaugh touted the apparent success of his book series on his radio program on Thursday.

"We just found out last night that on the New York Times Best-Seller List of March the 30th, ‘Rush Revere and the First Patriots’ will open at number one, and ‘Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims’ moves up to number four," said, according to a transcript of the audio.

Limbaugh’s book landed at the number-5 spot on the New York Times best seller’s list for the week of March 23.

CNN's Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

His books sell because what he preaches (for the most part) is the truth and liberals have a really hard time facing the cold hard reality of life. He tells them what they don't want to hear so rather then listen they ostracize. It's the liberal way.

Mr. Limbaugh is neither preacher, scholar, nor political strategist. First and foremost, Limbaugh is an entertainer. Limbaugh got his start during the heyday of AM radio comedies, particularly with late night disc jockeys. I first him in the late 1970s. He was gaining popularity by making light of Billy Carter, brother of then Democratic President Jimmy Carter. With that success, his path towards the right was set. But, first and foremost, and above all else, Limbaugh is an entertainer.

See liberals just expect cheating, to alter the rules so a filthy conservative cannot make the finals important because this sort of thing brings attention to the lies the liberals are teaching in OUR schools

I am always amused at the comments when certain names are mentioned. I would venture to say that the vast majority of people commenting haven't read the book or even listened to Mr. Limbaugh, other then listening to a comment of his taken out of context by a quasi news organization. With nearly every mainstream media outlet in this country falling in behind President Obama in lockstep, if even one person dares to disagree with his vision he is disparaged. Who are the "small" thinkers in this scenario?

Well if you libs hate this book so much why not collect all the books you don't like and burn them!

Libs have a hard time understanding Rush's tongue in cheek satire on his show if they even listen to it. most probably just see the out of context quotes and lies said about him and take it as gospel. I dont always agree with him but he is a better man than most of you.

Ahh, political correction at work. Ony authors with the "correct" political stance
    should be considered.

Fred, I love how you libs always rush to defend the abhorrent behavior and actions of your fellow libs, but quickly move to destroy a conservative for far lesser offenses. Is this that 'tolerance' thing you livvies are always screaming about?

This is truley hilarious! The sky is falling, the sky is falling. Here we are discussing childrens book authors and if they merit an award, and rather than using intelligent thought in critiquing said work, libs make up personnel attacks. I mean really if you spent two minutes researching Rush Limbaugh, rather than being lazy and amplifying the lies that are told about him, you would realize that Rush is a cash only customer in the health care market. He pays his own way when it comes to managing his health care needs. Did he have a brief condition of prescription drug addiction....yes, one which he owned up to and corrected. One which he payed for and didnt ask the rest of us to subsidize!

To the fools who don't realize that this is the kind of thing that keeps both left and right wingnuts very busy and raising lots of money- well, you get what you deserve. When the doors are closed people like Limbaugh and Obama are giving each other high 5s while throwing back drinks and watching their bank accounts soar at the expense of the sheep too dumb to realize the scheme.

Exactly "Libs", she wasn't asking for "access" to birth control.

She was demanding that the rest of us pay for HER birth control.
    ---------------------
I hate to break the bad news to you, but "the rest of us" have been "paying for birth control" for decades through insurance pools.

Nothing like closed minded liberals trying to deny honors to someone they don't like, even if it's just author of the year for children's books. Got to love the open mindedness of our friends on the left.

One would think a children's book would be judged on its content, not the author. As for the author, many who are opposed to him have never listened to him. Rush Limbaugh has the most popular talk radio show in the nation because a great many of his listeners, and I am one, share many of his views and like his sense of humor.

400 plus posts, mostly from "people" slamming liberals. Looks like Karl Rove and Roger Aisles are behind this in order to promote their water boy. Probably throwing a few quarters around for each negative post that gets published.

Obviously, you are completely unaware of the fact that the vast majority of the school books, especially history, used in our public elementary schools come from Texas. There they are written and approved by some board of Texas scholars, or something or another. But, rest assured. The overwhelming majority of school books are written and printed by Texas conservatives.

Which brings us back to Limbaugh's historical rewrites, which is exactly what they are. For example, the words of the 1st Amendment clearly demonstrate the Founding Fathers had envisioned a secular government, not a Christian nation.

"Heather Has Two Mommies" is required reading per the American left. But heaven forbid our precious youngsters read an historical children's book that teaches them about the founding of America. Since it doesn't mesh with Common Core or the radical left wing social justice mantra permeating our culture, das is verboten.

Let them rant. Those that believe all the media BS about Rush have never taken the time to listen to his show or look into finding the truth about anything.
    Hope he wins, great book.

    Dan
Yes, we have listened to his show and it's just button pushing non sense. And what is it that you hope he "wins"? Is he running for elected office? I doubt he would ever run for anything. He is a coward and his past transgressions will surely come out of the closet.

I didn't know that children's books have a "50 going on 3" age category group. Does the main
character ... what is his name? Ah, yes ... Rush Revere ... have the same facial characteristics as the author?

Looks like a lot of stooges have once again been "stooged" by the real life character.

Rush deserves the author-of-the-year. The books are GOOD. AND, I wish the facts in the story were more clear. Rush called Sandra Fluke those names because she wanted everyone else to PAY for her contraception, not for ACCESS to contraception. And the Pope's remarks WERE Marxist. Read Rush's books. You'll enjoy them. Listen to his program & you'll learn something.

Limbaugh, a firebrand? Incendiary? The authors of this article, CNN Political Unit, obviously have never listened to his show. He is anything but. The firebrands are on the left, like the OWS types. The problem with liberals is that they take somebody else's words for something, never investigating the claims themselves. If they do decide to listen, they listen only up to the point where they can confirm their bias, then tune out, which is to say, they never truly listen. "CNN Political Unit" my foot; more like the CNN Propaganda Unit.

I hope he wins. Sandra Fluke was advocating for taxpayer funded birth control. Conveniently left out of the article.

"he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control."

Correction: he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" because she wants taxpayers to pay for her birth control. Given the low cost of birth control pills and the very high cost of tuition at Georgetown it is outrageous that she would expect someone else to pay for her birth control.

In this case we can judge a book by it's cover. I give it a thumbs down.
