Rush Limbaugh selection in children’s book competition causes a stir

(CNN) - Rush Limbaugh - radio host, conservative firebrand and... children's book author of the year?

The Children’s Book Council and its Every Child a Reader program released on Thursday their author-of-the-year finalists for their annual Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards.

Limbaugh is one of the four finalists, and his nomination has prompted outrage on social media, given the host’s often-incendiary nature.

Limbaugh's book is titled, "Rush Revere and The Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" – a time-traveling tale of colonial America and the latest of two books in the "Rush Revere Series" published last year by Simon & Schuster.

Limbaugh, an outspoken figure in the political world, often expresses controversial sentiments on his radio program. Recently, Limbaugh blasted Pope Francis' economic views as "pure Marxism," and, in 2012, he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control.

The Children’s Book Council issued a public letter, posted to its website and Facebook page, defending its finalist selection process following the uproar online and insisting that the author of the year finalists "are determined solely based on titles’ performances on the bestseller lists."

"Some of you have voiced concerns over the selection of finalists from bestseller lists, which you feel are potentially-manipulable indications of the success of a title. We can take this into consideration going forward, but cannot change our procedure for selecting finalists after the fact," the organization said in the letter.

The CBC letter goes on to say the kids, who will start voting next week, ultimately decide which author wins in each of the six categories, including best author. The letter goes on to assure that the organization has a procedure in place to protect against fraud and adult's voting in the contest.

"This program has never been about CBC or ECAR endorsing finalists," the letter says.

Limbaugh touted the apparent success of his book series on his radio program on Thursday.

"We just found out last night that on the New York Times Best-Seller List of March the 30th, ‘Rush Revere and the First Patriots’ will open at number one, and ‘Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims’ moves up to number four," said, according to a transcript of the audio.

Limbaugh’s book landed at the number-5 spot on the New York Times best seller’s list for the week of March 23.

CNN's Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

This illustrates the deep rooted hate liberals have for successful people.

You characterization of Sandra Fluke as "supporting women's access to birth control" is a little light hearted since in truth she was demanding "free birth control."

How does he get nominated for this? Oh, it's based on sales. Now he sells tea and history books to his fans. Hater-ade and revisionism.

I think it's wonderful Rush has written books covering American History. Kids today aren't hearing about Paul Revere like we once did. I hope he wins and keeps up the good work for the youth of today. You people who haven't bothered to read his books, I say to you, get a life. This reminds me of the time the NEA banned orange juice because he was their spokesman. The NEA is the biggest joke out there. They care more about orange juice and Rush than their teachers molesting the students.

Whoa,,,, this is serious business to the left. They didn't do all that commie indoctrination in the schools over the decades to let some out-dated traditional America values come along and mes things up. The lefts owns the kids....and they will claw your eyes out if you try and teach them anything useful, patriotic or true even.

I can't think of a bigger sin for liberals than somene daring to try and take some of our kids back.

[trying this again to see if moderation is for every post or just when the overzealous filter thinks it found something - though I've seen some insanely overzealous filters in the past that blocked things with no rhyme or reason, nothing offensive at all within and just changing a word or two lets it go through inexplicably]

    > called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a [terms I'm probably not allowed to post but the article itself gets to use] for her support of women's access to birth control

What a gross mischaracterization of the situation. It was a joke and other than being crass – admittedly beyond the line per Limbaugh himself – it actually made a valid point. See, Fluke gave a ridiculously high dollar figure for birth control coverage for a year, something well beyond what's needed to stay on the pill. So Limbaugh merely pointed out that in order to make sense of that dollar figure, she must be using another sort of birth control and using a TON of it, day after day. Nothing else would match the dollar figure. And what would that make her, this completely-single-and-proud-of-it woman? You guessed it.

Moreover, "support for women's access"? Seriously? That is the exact sort of nonsensical propaganda the left uses and should never, EVER come from a so-called journalist. She didn't want "access". She wanted other people to pay for it. Period. You CANNOT with ANY credibility argue it was about "access".

Rush didn't call Fluke those things – he JOKED that she was those things because she gave a ridiculous dollar figure to the amount of birth control she needed per year, something well beyond what birth control really costs. And your "access" spin, CNN, is inexcusable. Fluke wasn't fighting for access. But of course, you're all leftists. You intentionally mislabel things like this because you can't deal in facts or you might lose elections.

The liberal outrage to this is just ironic proof of their Marxist ideologies. Marx said that the state must take control of children and indoctrinate them with Socialism, before their parents can do the opposite. And here we have liberals who are only upset because children might get taught the opposite of their Marxist propaganda. Hilarious.

It's great to see liberals believing in free speech, except for Limbaugh, though! He should be in prosion...or something! Treason!

LOL... You people are public school flunkies. You're afraid of Rush's books because American history and truth are like Kryptonite to your failing agenda and president. How's that 'hope and change' workin' out for ya?

    I love it.

The liberals blast Rush even though his books for children are excellent. The liberals here in NYC bash the Koch brothers because they donated 100M dollars to a local hospital and the new wing has their names on it. WHat a bunch of scumbags these liberals are. So filled with hate its disgusting. They hated Bill Gates the same way until he came out as being a l iberal. Now he is the greatest thing since global warming

It concerns me Rush is a finalist as he will call upon his dittoheads to vote for him. The kids voting will be influenced by mom and dad.

Uh, oh, The Children’s Book Council is in a lot of trouble because they have upset the Stalinist left. Also, Limbaugh's joke about Fluke was hilarious, almost as hilarious as how the Stalinist left portrayed Fluke afterwords as an innocent little 24-year-old schoolgirl when she was really a 30-year-old seasoned activist and anti-Christian bigot who wanted to make everyone pay for her recreational sex.

While I'm not a fan of Limbaugh, I just love anybody or anything that makes the post-American liberals hiss and sputter. It makes me feel good all over for the post-Americans to put their "tolerance and diversity" on display for all the world to see.

I'm always amused when the left wants to pick what a real "writer" should be. The very thing they accuse the right and conservatives of is exactly what the left is. Rush Limbaugh, is as much a writer as the community activist who wrote the book "dreams of my father", (we think, but we cannot be sure that he wrote this". The problem with the liberal agenda, and this problem is a messaging problem, is called hypocrisy. Once they are able to look at themselves in the mirror and see themselves for what they truly are maybe they will be taken seriously. Until that point the thinking man in this country can only laugh, laugh at their uttered nonsensical dogma. Good for Rush Limbaugh, and all other hard-working Americans who earned what they earn with a simple strategy, hard work.

Well, the uninformed trolls are out in defense of their leftist agenda again. But it's obvious they haven't even read the book. They'd prefer their kids learn the hateful socialist tripe offered by "teachers" in government schools

Or what used to be referred to as "factual information" prior to the age of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Democrats.

I wonder if Charles Manson wrote a children's book about happy little lambs frolicking in a field, people would buy it. I mean afterall, he did not actually murder anyone himself. He just talked his followers into it. But everybody knows talk is cheap and words really do not have consequences.
