Rush Limbaugh selection in children’s book competition causes a stir

(CNN) - Rush Limbaugh - radio host, conservative firebrand and... children's book author of the year?

The Children’s Book Council and its Every Child a Reader program released on Thursday their author-of-the-year finalists for their annual Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards.

Limbaugh is one of the four finalists, and his nomination has prompted outrage on social media, given the host’s often-incendiary nature.

Limbaugh's book is titled, "Rush Revere and The Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" – a time-traveling tale of colonial America and the latest of two books in the "Rush Revere Series" published last year by Simon & Schuster.

Limbaugh, an outspoken figure in the political world, often expresses controversial sentiments on his radio program. Recently, Limbaugh blasted Pope Francis' economic views as "pure Marxism," and, in 2012, he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control.

The Children’s Book Council issued a public letter, posted to its website and Facebook page, defending its finalist selection process following the uproar online and insisting that the author of the year finalists "are determined solely based on titles’ performances on the bestseller lists."

"Some of you have voiced concerns over the selection of finalists from bestseller lists, which you feel are potentially-manipulable indications of the success of a title. We can take this into consideration going forward, but cannot change our procedure for selecting finalists after the fact," the organization said in the letter.

The CBC letter goes on to say the kids, who will start voting next week, ultimately decide which author wins in each of the six categories, including best author. The letter goes on to assure that the organization has a procedure in place to protect against fraud and adult's voting in the contest.

"This program has never been about CBC or ECAR endorsing finalists," the letter says.

Limbaugh touted the apparent success of his book series on his radio program on Thursday.

"We just found out last night that on the New York Times Best-Seller List of March the 30th, ‘Rush Revere and the First Patriots’ will open at number one, and ‘Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims’ moves up to number four," said, according to a transcript of the audio.

Limbaugh’s book landed at the number-5 spot on the New York Times best seller’s list for the week of March 23.

CNN's Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

    Rush always say being a Liberal is a mental disease. Reading these posts, Rush is right again. You need to get out more. If it is good, it's good. Your liberal message is melting. You are hearing more and more people say they cant wait to vote to get these people out and get our country back. to normal. We still wont agree, but we wont be animals about it anymore. We have lost all our civility and people are noticing and they are fed up. So, leave the kids alone and let them have a childhood and learn to read and enjoy it.

    Reading the comments here against Rush and his books – Dudes- do you even listen? Because the guy I listen to every day is not the guy that you are describing. It's telling that you have such contempt towards someone you don't even know. And yet, he's right there on your radio- 3 hrs. a day, telling you exactly what he thinks- and all you have to do is liste

    How gullible you are i feel real sorry for you sir.

    For those who seem to think Rush didn't write the book himself, don't judge him by the liberals who use ghost writers. Please give us your proof. And to those complaining about RushRevere, he us NOT portrayed as a historical character in the book. He is a middle school substitute teacher. It would help if you actually knew what you were talking about before you make yourself look foolish with invalid criticisms.

    Gee, so many comments and almost no one has even read this book. I find that simply astounding.

    Rush Limbaugh: Propaganda in its worst form. Oh how I appreciate free speech and the ability to understand the difference between being given the opportunity to publish propaganda versus the opportunity to not to be forced purchase propaganda.

    We should all be very concerned about this conservative trespass into the minds of our children and ultimately into our schools, which must be a safe haven for our little ones to grow and prosper into good subjects of the State!

    Reading the Rush Revere book series may result in:

    (1) Second graders nibbling their pop tarts into the shape of a pistol;
    (2) The desire to wear shirts and otherwise promote the rights promulgated in our Bill of Rights:
    (3) The desire to think your yourself;
    (4) Standing up for the Pledge of Allegience;
    (5) Love of both God and Country; and
    (6) So much more that liberals can't stand.

    We can't have that now, can we?

    The liberals hate Rush so it doesn't matter how good the book is. They are blinded by their bias.

    You are spot on because i am one liberal that think that nothing good can come out of a racist, and rush is one of those.

    Rush is disliked because Rush IS right. Not an idological right but a correct right. Nuff said.

    You fail to mention that they also believe in discrimination, just a bunch of racist to me anyway that is what i think conservatives are

    Thank you, Rush Limbaugh, for explaining to us what happens when writers like yourself don't reveal how this Country's freedoms came about and are held safe. Certainly not be only listening or reading what liberals twist and would like us to believe. I'll bet even frontline teachers are troubled to read how books are gone over and content changed by some group that hides the insightful words how this Country became and remains free against the likes of some socialist who are coming very close to altering our original Constitution meanings.

    Name

    He called Fluke a prositute because she wanted free Birth Control not access to it.
    -------------------------–
    That's only one half of the truth, which totally distorts the facts. The facts are that Georgetown had been covering prescription birth control for years, for decades. Suddenly, with the passage of the ACA, Georgetown decided that they would no longer cover prescription birth control, arguing that they ACA shouldn't force them to cover it, despite the fact that they had done so for years. Brith control prescriptions can be written for a variety of reasons, none of which have anything to do with intercourse.

    I take it from the libs reaction Rush doesn't have photo's of the Founders smoking pole for the kiddies. Washington didn't have 2 mommies so the tolerant libs have to ban it.

    "...for her support of women's access to birth control." So, that's what you're calling it now, eh? I thought it was using my tax dollars to pay for a woman's birth control. Imagine my surprise.

    Good for Rush and good for our younger generation that are reading and loving his Rush Revere books. I listen to these kids call into to his radio program and can hear the excitement in their voices over these books and it just blesses my heart.

    Can't you hear yourself talk? Mental disease? Seriously? How would you describe conservatives?

    You're saying that "....people say they cant wait to vote to get these people out and get our country back."
    You're saying that "We have lost all our civility and people are noticing and they are fed up."
    You're saying that "We still wont agree, but we wont be animals about it anymore."

    You're saying that "we", the fed up folks, are acting like this simply because they are not in charge, and running things.

    This guy should be kept away from all children and definitely not writing books to sell to them. Children have enough to contend with in this world without listening to the propaganda that Rush Limbaugh dictates.

    The criticisms I'm hearing about these books shouldn't be a surprise to ANYONE. These are the same left wing loons that criticize the guy's radio show without ever having even heard it but instead, know a guy who knows a guy whose friend's cousin read something on media matters once. Of course these idiots would criticize a book they've never even read! In fact, I suspect most of these people don't read books period!

    I don't like Rush the entertainer, and I have not read the book. I have listened to his radio program and believe he has a habit of distorting the "truth" to meet his political objectives. I would expect that there are some historical inaccuracies in the book, just like his radio program, but that it not the point for Rush. It is all about the Benjamins $$$$. The man knows how to get money from his peeps.

    Anyone remember that baptist preacher that had announced that he wanted to burn copies of the Koran, not so long ago. He had thrown most of the Islamic world into an uproar. Remember him?

    How many of you out there are aware of the fact that he and Limbaugh attended the same small town high school together? Graduated the same year, in fact.

    @rick, men can get Viagra to the tune of $819M and cialis $782M because it's paid for by insurance.
    Men can even buy, which Medicare covers 100% for the cost of $360 each, "member" pumps .
    On the other conservative hand (I wish the right sing nutsos had to use it more often) women are denied birth control of any kind and then after they get pregnant, see above hormones gone crazy, they can't have an abortion.
    This is why we need a woman presidents more women in politics.
