Obamacare applicants to get more deadline flexibility

Washington (CNN) - The Obama administration will give more time to people who try to apply for health insurance coverage through the federal marketplace by Monday but encounter difficulty, administration officials said Tuesday evening.

Monday is the deadline for people to enroll in order to have coverage for this year or face penalties under the Affordable Care Act.

"Open enrollment ends March 31. We are experiencing a surge in demand and are making sure that we will be ready to help consumers who may be in line by the deadline to complete enrollment - either online or over the phone," said Joanne Peters, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Reid campaign paid granddaughter for gifts to supporters

(CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s campaign committee said Tuesday it had done nothing improper when it spent nearly $17,000 in campaign funds on hundreds of items from a jewelry company owned by Reid’s granddaughter, Ryan Elisabeth Reid.

Those items - coasters, picture frames and other trinkets with themes from Reid’s hometown of Searchlight, Nevada - were given to staff members and campaign supporters as thank you gifts, according to a Reid aide. Each item is valued at about $50.

HOBBY LOBBY: COURT MAJORITY HARSHLY CRITICAL OF OBAMACARE CONTRACEPTION MANDATE … CNN’s Bill Mears reports: The Supreme Court justices hearing the two cases on the hotly contested issue testing the limits of government-mandated contraception coverage appeared divided along ideological lines in a 90-minute oral argument.

"How does a corporation exercise religion?" asked Justice Sonia Sotomayor, summarizing perhaps the key constitutional question at hand.

"This is a religious question," said Justice Samuel Alito, suggesting the businesses have such a right. "You want us to provide a definitive secular answer."

A ruling expected by late June could clarify whether businesses have a religious liberty right, or whether such constitutional protections apply only to individuals.

Braley dismisses Grassley's 'Iowa farmer' credentials in video clip

Washington (CNN) – Iowa Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, a leading candidate for the U.S. Senate this year, was put on the defensive Tuesday by a video clip showing him warning that a Republican Senate takeover could leave the GOP's Chuck Grassley - "a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school" - in charge of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee.

If the GOP captures the Senate majority, "you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee," Braley says in the video.

From Clinton nemesis to defender

Washington (CNN) – A former Clinton antagonist-turned-aggressive defender warned Tuesday that the infamous “vast right-wing conspiracy” is already gearing up for 2016.

“The conservatives of today have no program to offer the vast majority of Americans,” prominent Clinton supporter David Brock told an audience in Little Rock, Arkansas, according to prepared remarks. “So we see them running scared, and once again, cultivating a culture of Clinton hatred, in Hillary’s case - as you can see - with a heavy dose of misogyny.”

Christie blasts federal government over Sandy funding

Belmar, New Jersey (CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday again defended his administration’s response to Superstorm Sandy, saying the state was “not sitting on any” aid money.

Christie ventured to a shore community hit by the historic 2012 storm that ravaged parts of the state’s vaunted coast, but he faced little heat at the town hall event in Belmar, his 116th overall since first taking office.
