Phoenix, Columbus out of the running for 2016 GOP convention

Washington (CNN) – The Republican National Committee has narrowed the list of cities it is considering to host the 2016 GOP convention to six, and announced Wednesday it is no longer considering Phoenix and Columbus, Ohio.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City and Las Vegas are still in contention to host the convention where Republicans will officially choose their presidential nominee.

“In any other year, Columbus and Phoenix could have topped the list, but with so many strong cities competing, the committee had to make the difficult decision to narrow the field,” Enid Mickelsen, chair of the RNC’s Site Selection Committee said in a statement. “Phoenix and Columbus are great American cities, and I hope they’ll pursue a future bid for an RNC convention.”

Representatives from each of the cities have been courting the RNC’s Site Selection Committee for the past few months, and made their formal pitches in March. RNC staff will visit each of the cities in the coming months, and members of the Site Selection Committee are expected to choose the host city by late summer or early fall.

Cities formally begin vying for '16 GOP convention

For a city, a convention is a costly affair as the host is expected to raise upwards of $60 million to help pay for it. But if managed correctly, a convention pays off as the surrounding communities are flooded with as many as 50,000 new visitors and the area is showcased on an international stage for weeks leading up to the event.

Demographics loom large for cities vying for Republican 2016 convention

The Site Selection Committee will consider a number of factors as it determines what city it will choose to hold the 2016 RNC Convention, including the ability to raise money, adequate infrastructure, ease of transporting delegates and visitors to and from the convention hall, public perception and potential electoral benefits.

The Democratic Party goes through a similar process when choosing its convention site.

For 2016, Democrats hunt for a convention city

Tony D – Your post has been fact checked and it is not true. The savings were to be applied to health care, the savings. Ryan and Mittens were given a mostly false for saying this in their campaign.

They will not pick a place that doesn't have a lot of strip clubs. Then they can go back to the hotel and take their Viagra that their insurance paid for. You do know these people are conservatives.

Great responses! LOL! But seriously folks, if the republicans don't make some substantial changes soon, it may be a LOOOOONG time before they ever again see the inside of the White House.

Misleading headline. Real shocker there, CNN. From the CNN frontpage, it looks as if the cities themselves have turned the GOP down. Turns out, the GOP elimiated them from the list.

Amazing that a right winger like yourself would complain about the other side lying. You have a whole industry funded by the Kochs and broadcast by FAUX News dedicated to disinformation.

Sizzle, you may be correct. The last city to host the DNC the mayor got a new job in Washington and his replacement got arrested. What everyone keeps asking is how did a city counsel member have so much "pull" and the Mayor end up in Washington????

    Really Tony
Really Tony D – Those Medicare cuts you talk about was NOT cuts for the Medicare patients. It was cuts to the already OVERPRICED Medicare payments to the medical cartels. Talk about Lies!!!
    ---

Wow... 'overpriced Medicare payments"??? So now doctors and hospitals are getting rich on Medicare patients??? If this is the case then why do the Democrats keep passing the "Doc Fix"? Cuts to Medicare payments to doctors that was passed many years ago, but keeps getting delayed for fear of many doctors dropping out of taking Medicare patients. If they are getting rich on them, would they drop out of the program? Medicare costs are not making anybody rich. You make zero sense, as can be said for most lefties.

@KellyinBoston: "Uhh, "Just asking"–You do realize that people PAY for insurance under the ACA, right? Its not free."

Except for all the people getting subsidies, paid for by taxpayers. Except for a large percentage of the sign-ups who are signing up to be absolute burdens on society by going under Medicaid. The whole point of Obamacare is to rip off some in order to give freebies to others.

@Tone, Tampa Tim, and Sniffit-It`s a fact alot people lost their insurance due to the ACA. We don`t have the number as of now, just like we don`t have alot numbers related to the ACA.
    --–
First it was 6 million, now it's "a lot." People get to keep their junk policies for another year, many others chose a better plan that conformed to the new law, that is not cancelled Be patient, the numbers will continue to come in from the states, and it will be good news.

And after taking into account the financial losses suffered by the city of Tampa during the 2012 convention, Columbus & Phoenix officials are both breathing a sigh of relief right now.

Come to San Francisco, City by the Bay. The GOP delegates, 99% who are white, will see a racially and culturally diverse city, a glimpse into America's future.
