Phoenix, Columbus out of the running for 2016 GOP convention

Washington (CNN) – The Republican National Committee has narrowed the list of cities it is considering to host the 2016 GOP convention to six, and announced Wednesday it is no longer considering Phoenix and Columbus, Ohio.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City and Las Vegas are still in contention to host the convention where Republicans will officially choose their presidential nominee.

“In any other year, Columbus and Phoenix could have topped the list, but with so many strong cities competing, the committee had to make the difficult decision to narrow the field,” Enid Mickelsen, chair of the RNC’s Site Selection Committee said in a statement. “Phoenix and Columbus are great American cities, and I hope they’ll pursue a future bid for an RNC convention.”

Representatives from each of the cities have been courting the RNC’s Site Selection Committee for the past few months, and made their formal pitches in March. RNC staff will visit each of the cities in the coming months, and members of the Site Selection Committee are expected to choose the host city by late summer or early fall.

Cities formally begin vying for '16 GOP convention

For a city, a convention is a costly affair as the host is expected to raise upwards of $60 million to help pay for it. But if managed correctly, a convention pays off as the surrounding communities are flooded with as many as 50,000 new visitors and the area is showcased on an international stage for weeks leading up to the event.

Demographics loom large for cities vying for Republican 2016 convention

The Site Selection Committee will consider a number of factors as it determines what city it will choose to hold the 2016 RNC Convention, including the ability to raise money, adequate infrastructure, ease of transporting delegates and visitors to and from the convention hall, public perception and potential electoral benefits.

The Democratic Party goes through a similar process when choosing its convention site.

For 2016, Democrats hunt for a convention city

  2. it must be said

Phoenix is WAY TOO HOT. Columbus? Eh... Cincinatti is better and in the same state. Good choices to drop and narrow it down.

  3. The REAL Truth...

The GOP in TX must want this convention pretty badly if they are willing to pony up $60M to bring it to Dallas. I'm sure the Koch's can cover the cost..

Goggle "RNC Convention 2008 Minneapolis". Fifty thousand is a loooong stretch.

Fifty percent of the venue was empty seating in 2008. Lighting was all but eliminated in the upper sections to try and mask the sections of "no shows".

but it was obama slapping the russian on the knee and winking that he would have more flexibility after his re-election. and then there was that free gift of cancelling the missile shield deployment and the collosal russian reset failure of clinton and obama.

it has been hillary clinton and obama that have had their lips firmly planted on putin's back side the last 5 years. nice try though. but your lies are easily shown as such.

Sheldon Adelson has already picked the candidate, the platform is to eliminate on line gambling, eliminate women's reproductive rights, more tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations, and a war with Russia and a war with Iran. Why have a convention?

    Why don't they
Why don't they "Repeal and replace the convention with ___________". I think we already know the GOP mantra....TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH!!.....and.......GET RID OF SS AND MEDICARE!!!. We don't need to hear it again and again and again.

what we had plus targeted solutions to the small problems that existed. the destruction of our healthcare system with a federal government takeover was not needed. obama and the democrats have damaged hundreds of millions of americans to try and help very few. total insanity. and the cost? already near 2 trillion dollars. total insanity.

but the democrats have always wanted to takeover the healthcare system in this country as it provides the ultimate in people control. they had their chance and did it based on lies, deceit and dirty back room deals and the american now know this.

Tampa Tim- I totally agree with you! The GOP is bought and paid for. I wouldn't be surprised if, Surprise Surprise, they choose Vegas and headquarter at an Adelson hotel as well. Good, hope Adelson spends a ton of his money again, better it goes into our economy. And he will spend all that money out of his pocket again, and LOSE AGAIN!! Love it!!! It is funny that Arizona is even too crazy for the GOP this year, bwahahahahaha!

They should make it close to Carmel. That way the short bus won't have to drive far to get Eastwood there.

  20. just asking

    Small problems
Just asking......Like Millions of sick and poor people without health care? Those small problems? What's your solution to those small problems.

seriously??? well where the heck are hiding them all? because you claimed there were 50 million and you could barely scrape up 7 million, after years of begging, prodding and bribes. billions spent on advertising. where are all these people to signup for this massive government freebie?

poor people have always been able to sign up for medicaid. it has been around for decades. if you wanted to expand it, then expand it, no need to blow up everything else.

and all of the sick people with pre-existing conditions could be pooled into a new government program called demoCare. all the sick people would be pooled with all the democrats that want to help pay for their healthcare. enrollment would be mandatory based on the voter rolls, just as the personal mandate is mandatory. democrats would be required to put their money where their mouth is. others may also of course volunteer to join the pool, but for democrats it is required.

there, see how easy that was to fix, and all without blowing up the healthcare system that hundreds of millions liked and counted on for them and their family.

You're giving the GOP too much credit
Mark – No.......No they wouldn't. They would still be shouting........TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH!!!! and GET RID OF SS AND MEDICARE!!

You DO realize that so far, ONLY OBAMA, DEMOCRATS and OBAMACARE have CUT and REDUCED Medicare, right?! They stole $700 BILLION to pay for Obamacare and now Medicare Advantage Plans are targetted.

As usual, lefties screaming their lies.

at least the RNC injects some money into the local economy of the host city. i'm guessing nobody wants to host the DNC. Who would want to clean up the feces left behind by all the hippies sleeping in tents in the parks and stealing food from restaurant dumpsters?

The GOP should pick a place accustomed to chronic foul smells. That way no one would notice their presence.
