Orlando, Florida (CNN) - A long line snaked around the perimeter of a large hotel conference room as people waited eagerly to meet a former Texas congressman who they view as an icon in the modern libertarian movement.
Ron Paul had finished delivering a nearly hour-long speech to a gathering of Florida libertarians on Friday night, and he was now signing copies of books, t-shirts, posters and even a few paintings.

His followers have been ready for a long time; the problem is Rant will never win a national election because he has yet to point to one nation in the history of our planet that has implemented his policy ideas and had it result in sustainable, broad-based economic prosperity and civil society.
On top of that, for a guy who's such a freedom-lover, he sure has a problem letting a woman decide what to do with her own body.
NEXT!
"modern libertarian movement" This "movement" is neither modern nor libertarian. It is a thinly veiled cover for old-fashioned arch conservative administered corporate run government. It is supported by big corporate money and ultra rich fat cats and religious extremists.
Yes, they are breathlessly awaiting for the white smoke to signal that a second generation of loons will be leading the Libertarian movement. The problem is, they cannot agree on what they really stand for beyond the buzz words.
Neither of these two idiots worth your dime. They both are just radicals. I mean they are like American Taliban. Period.
@Silence,
If you're going to hate a group of people, at least know what the group is all about. Libertarians are religious extremists? Dude, that is a completely nonsensical statement and if you research what a libertarian really is then you will see the inconsistency of that statement alone.
Please run Random Paul! Run Paul!....RUN!!!

I am not talking about the dictionary definition of Libertarian. I actually joined the local Libertarian group to work to open the election process in my state to more candidates than just Dem/Repub. Because I thought they were Libertarian. It turns out they stood for essentially everything the Far Right stands for. I was ridiculed for anything liberal. I say again, the modern Libertarian is a cover for extreme Right Wingers. Not hate – just fact.
@DM4O, you missed that India malnutrition guy, peeyuush zindol.
Randy may have a problem in that it does not appear the BIG money is lining up behind him. Of course the BIG money was also convinced that Mittens was going to win by a landslide. That is Citizen Mittens, not President Mittens at this time.
Who did I leave out?
Oh yes, please run Jindal, Haley, Brown (might as well, everybody else is).. Perry, Brewer, the nice lady that got busted for campaign shenaningans right after she gave the nice response to the SOTU, who else? Come on in and run.
Take one for the team. And take one you will. You betcha.
It is looking like 2012 all over again for the Republicans.
No one that is coastally viable, much less nationally.
Their only hope is to start training their base to embrace people who are different from them, that way they can have a real outreach to those "minorities" they need to win.
But so long as their base and their elected officials continue to think and talk like the Donnas and the Ricks on this thread they're screwed and will remain so for years to come.
No way. Rand isn't half the man his father is. Rand is a Republican shill. Ron didn't compromise, that's why we gave him so much support! Ron Paulnuts all the way!
You rock Mamma 4 Obama.
@Silence,
There is no way that it was a libertarian group that you went to go join as a libertarian's views on social issues does not match up with the far right. In fact, a libertarian's views on social issues lines up much more with liberals than conservatives so I am having a hard time understanding how it's possible that your experience occurred the way you say it did. What was the name of the group and where was it? I'd love to know more because you might have not gone to the libertarian group. It just doesn't make sense.

Thanks don. I enjoy your posts as well.
Please run Hillarity and the Waco Kid.
Rand is not like his father. Other than on foreign policy, he is a typical right wing authoritarian who masquerades as a libertarian. All of his policies except on foreign policy and marijuana legalization would be a complete disaster if implemented.
@ tom l
Happy Monday to you tom l.

I think Paul has demonstrated he has little regard for social issues. I do not agree with either extreme – that unlimited government OR unlimited corporations are a good thing. But this is a healthy debate, and one that goes back to 1776. The Whigs vs. the Democratic-Republicans debated bigger or smaller government. In our modern age, corporations have shown they are as controlling as any government. We need to watch them both.
