Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

    How lame are you that you throw a shoe at someone who can't even see you? Where is the taser when you need it?

    Interesting that scrap recycling folks want to cough up $250K for her to speak to them. I would of thought they would prefer someone of a different political persuasion.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Why? Those of "a different political persuasion" don't care enough about the environment to recycle.

    Am wondering whether that woman who threw the shoe has kids. If she does, how does she teach them what is right and what is wrong?

    In Iraq throwing a shoe at someone is an insult. In the United States throwing a shoe at someone is an assault with a non-lethal shoe federal offense.

    Time to bring in the IRS and NSA to put some pressure on those Republican obstructionists! Bet they'll start "cooperating" after a few tax audits and phone tap records get published.

    Stupid people attempting a assault on public figure because they don't go along with what they are saying,knew she was wrong and tried to escape,someone needed to slam her on the deck instead of letting the little princess walk out with her hands up,slam her and throw some cuffs on her right there !!

    LOL – When I saw the shoe thrower’s severely damaged bleach blonde hair, my first thought was that the Widow Cobain was back on the smack and had mistaken the event for an AMA presentation and Hillary for Madonna!

    IYes, we have the right to protest, but we should do it in a sane way. This woman had no business throwing a shoe at Hillary. She, was not talking about other parties, just about recycling to save our earth. Hillary has always been a peace maker all threw her life. Even in college she was a mediator to bring students together in a peaceful manner during the sit ins. So this woman should be examined and than maybe a light jail sentence to think about how silly she was acting. Who knows what she would do next to someone.

    Good thing that lady missed because Hillary didn't even see it coming. I'm not the biggest Hillary fan but no one deserves to be clocked in the head with a shoe...and she threw it hard too

    Its good that there are intelligent women, actually skeptical about Hillary as a candidate, and strong enough to make it known. That's positive.

    The last thing we need is another candidate chosen only to "make history"....we've suffered 5 yrs. because of that silly
    idea.

    What they did just opened the old wound. The way to win the election they thought?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Who is "they", and what "old wound" did "they" open?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    They thought they would hurt Hilary in the shoe game. It was the wound and there was an old wound. Who was they? Do the homework.

    The papers had to do with the capture of Che Guevara and, apparently the US role in this. Evidently what this particular flake was put off about.

    Future President Hillary Clinton is America's best choice to succeed President Obama.

    Looking forward to continued economic prosperity: record Stock Market, record deficit reduction, record 401K, record housing costs.

    These are great times for America. And best of all – NO foreign wars started by Obama. Thank you Mr. President!

    I dunno, anyone who would do such a thing during such a well-attended function isn't very "intelligent".

    There is nothing at all funny about this, and I am livid at how the media is handling it.

    When some idiot does this in a foreign country, it's different. For a supposed American to do this?

    She should not only be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and fined, she should lose her citizenship, be stripped of her passport, and be shipped one-way to Iraq.

    This is NOT funny in any way. And just shows how perverse right wing media has become inspiring AMERICANS to perpetrate this kind of criminal attack.

    Reading the comments section, it does seem interesting to me that everybody seems concerned about Hillary's safety when it was a big national joke when Bush had a shoe thrown at him a few years back. Not a fan of either political figure, and neither of them should have shoes, or anything for that matter, thrown at them. Just thought it was interesting how responses change based on the political views of the shoe thrower's target.
