Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

As I remember, the same thing happened to Dubya, and he also successfully ducked. The difference was his happened in the Mid East. I didn't know shoe throwing was part of our culture, nor that solid waste was a hot issue.

Strangely familiar......Middle Eastern shoe throwing incidents to display anger/insult the recipient of shoe throwing! Security seems to have been minimal at this event. Security....is this the best you can do?

I smell a set-up. One for the viral-world. Kind of like catching a fainting woman who is standing behind you.
You got to love the relationship of Hollywood and the Democratic National Party. I wish the GOP would get a little more creative. lol

Good to know security is doing their jobs. I wish someone this country would actually get fired for their incompetence. No one should get past security period.

Either that woman has a terrible aim or she did not want to hit Mrs Clinton. The shoe went over her head before she reacted. This is normal because of the stage lights that make it difficult for her to see the audience. I'm glad she is OK and followed the incident with humor. The Secret Service needs to find out how this woman slipped through even though she was not invited to prevent a worse type of threat in the future. I hope they don't need to make people take their shoes off before entering future events!

You'd have thought after it happened to Bush, that all politicians would be ready with, "Who throws a show? Honestly?"

I'm sure there will be lots of nasty commenters here making witty remarks wishing the shoe had hit her or whatever. What I see is our level of public discourse devolving into that of Iraq. Pathetic.
