Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

What was absurd and uncalled for. If she had a complaint with Hillary she could have yelled something. Throwing a show at the former First Lady, and quite possibly the next President of the US is ridiculous.

No responses? Why when Bush had a shoe thrown at him in Bagdad the liberals thought it was big news. An American throws one at Clinton in the U.S. and nada. Amazing isn't it.

"She ducked and it missed her." Correction: "It missed her and THEN she ducked!" 🙂

Waste management is a hot topic globally. She really stay up on problems. The whole Mrs degree thing really showed in her stent at the State Department.

Truly, there are some disreputable people out there. You might not agree with the speaker but trash behavior like that says more about the person in the audience than it does about the person on the stage.

these bigots will never learn. i love how she ran off like a coward. i so frustrated by this. Hillary has always been respectful and kind. using violence whether a gun, shoe, or a fist is WRONG. im all for free speech but when you use violence to attempt to get a point across, you nullify the possibility of anyone giving a damn about what you're trying. stupid woman.

The incident was sparked by an inflammatory Youtube video.

She ducked and it missed her? Fast on her feet? Did you even see the video. It sailed past her and she ducked way after the fact. Man you love her don't you?

WOW! That is totally unacceptable. How did she get in there? Why don't we know her name? Why wasn't she immediately handcuffed and drug out of there like a person who just attempted to assault any other former first family member?

We must worry about shoe bombs on planes, but when an unidentified, uncredentialed person throws one at the former first lady, and former secretary of state, everyone handles her like she might have rights?

So now, by law, anybody attending a political rally must surrender their shoes? Will Stilettos be illegal under penalty of death because of their well known boomerang action if thrown expertly at a target.

Hillary is the overwhelming favorite until the media and the other democrats turn against her like in 2008. The media made Hillary lose because they wanted Obama to be the candidate. If she knows what is good for her, she should say thanks for no thanks.

That was a stupid and lame thing for that idiot to do, but it's amazing how CNN is breaking their neck to make Hillary look good. The shoe flies past with no reaction until after it's missed by a wide margin. What are the headlines? "FAST ON HER FEET" and "How Hillary dodged it." I mean, seriously?

What a fluff piece. The only thing that saved her from a size 6 welt on her forehead was the horrible aim of the protester. If you watch the video slowed down, she doesn't even flinch until the shoe was past her head. Terrible journalism CNN, but I would be lying if I said I was surprised.

The throwing of a shoe is a symbol for how much power the people in a democracy actually have to affect change
