Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

Correction: Please change "Hillary ducked and it missed her" to "A shoe was hurled at Hillary, but it missed." Thank you. It's a minor detail, but since there's a video that shows exactly what happened there's simply no excuse for getting it wrong.

I sometimes wonder if these protesters are more about "look at what I did" instead of "this is why I did it"

Too many people who can't wait for a return to the Bush years – that's just sad.

The only solid waste in the room was that ignorant woman throwing the shoe.

Hillary Clinton deserves such hospitality. Sadly, she doesn't care.

    Getting a Bush moment ?

" She ducked and it missed her " – not at all – it missed her first, then she ducked. See the vid.

If this is how she dodged the sniper fire, it must've been a lousy sniper.

"She ducked and it missed her,..."

    Glad it didn't hit her.

But it's pretty generous to claim it missed because she ducked. She didn't react until it was well past her.

Way to rip off the guy who threw a shoe at G. W. Bush. If you're going to protest, at least be original. Lame.

Hillary's an ad lib pro. It's moments like these that test the strength and character of a leader. Reagan himself couldn't have done it any better as in "I forgot to duck" except Hillary actually ducked and came up with a witty quip immediately. That's worth the 270 electoral votes (and more) right there.

Hillary's handling of incident just makes me like her that much more. Run for pres, HIllary. At least we would have one decent candidate in the mix.

I don't care what party you affiliate yourself with or what policies you oppose, there are more civilized ways to express your view than throwing a shoe. How embarrassing for whatever group this woman was representing.

I wish everyone on both sides could express their views more civilly (those that don't already, that is).
