Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

A shoe in the face is better than a foot in the mouth.

so Hillary gets props for having a shoe thrown at her but when it happened to GW, it was "reported" by MSM as indication of his dislike by the "rest of the world". Double standard much?

The news claimed she cooly dodged it, being swift on her feet, but she didnt actually dodge it at all. It had already sailed past her by the time she noticed it, and even then, all she did was cringe while scampering away. She even thought it was a BAT !

I'm no fan of bush but come on! At least he actually saw it coming, recognized it, and ducked. The bias of the media could not be more obvious on this one.

Now, only if she'd take a hint and get the heck out of politics! The sad thing is I'm a democrat, and I will vote for ANYONE who opposes her. I refuse to elect another Clinton, or Bush..and after Obama I may flat out refuse to vote Democrat ever again, after having done so in every election post 1998.

    I'm not buyin' it.
She saw how W's popularity went up after the shoe incident, and is trying it herself.
    It was an obvious set-up.

Clearly shoes need to be banned. The founding fathers never conceived the caliber of shoes of today when they wrote the 2nd Ammendment.

@Anonymous: Sure you're a Democrat! Really? And, until the Republicans change and stop being the Party of NO, I refuse to vote for a Republican.

For those that say: she didn't duck it properly, are you guys for real? She was attending a conference, not some kind of silly pinballing game. When you give a talk on a stage to a big audience you concentrate on the points you want to convey, you don't look around for shoes that come to fly your way! Seems funny and she took it graciously, but this is really not a game, it's a serious security breach...

Why would anybody be willing to become President of the U.S. ? The majority of people have no respect for their President , no matter what the President tries to accomplish .

First, Hillary moved after the shoes passed her. There was no ducking, etc. Then the anchors go into the praising mode of Hillary, for what? The news is the same no matter who you watch. The anchors were just acting as PR machines.

This is absolutely ridiculous...if your about to protest it should be in a more effective way where she can fully give her view points. By just throwing a shoe at Hillary Clinton is very absurd in trying to prove a point. Essentially, her view points would be easily forgotten.

    Benghazi! Benghazi!
Steve9930, if you TRULY cared about Americans, perhaps you'd be hunting for 'justice' for the Marines in Beirut, but you're not. You have an axe to grind, and that's ALL you've got. 180 dead Marines (under Reagan), NO outrage from the right, four dead Americans under a Dem, and the hystrionics won't stop.
    Benghazi! Benghazi!!
