Police seek charges against woman for allegedly throwing shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – Las Vegas Police are pursuing disorderly conduct charges against a woman who allegedly threw a shoe at Hillary Clinton during a speech on Thursday.

Alison Ernst, 36, did not have a ticket to the event at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino featuring the former secretary of state, and Secret Service agents assigned to protect her noticed her as she eluded hotel security, according to a U.S. law enforcement account of the incident.

As Secret Service and hotel security approached her, she threw a shoe, which missed Clinton, who had ducked.

Ernst was immediately detained.

A Las Vegas police report said she took the shoe from her purse and that after she was detained, “Ernst appeared to be in an agitated state but aware of what she had just done.”

A U.S. law enforcement official said federal prosecutors in Las Vegas declined to press charges, and Ernst was turned over to local authorities.

Las Vegas Police are recommending disorderly conduct charges be brought against her by Clark County, Nevada, prosecutors.

Ernst has been released with orders to return for a June 24 court date.

Secret Service Special Agent Brian Spellacy said the investigation is ongoing.

Las Vegas police released a booking photo of Ernst. She is pictured with brown hair but can be seen in video footage of the incident wearing what appeared to be a blonde wig.

Clinton ducked as the shoe flew past her, then joked about the incident before delivering her address to a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about a 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration.

She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race, if she decides to run.

CNN's Dan Merica and Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

    Heh good dodge by Hilldog.

However me thinks "throwing the shoe" should become a metaphor along the lines of "jumping the shark."

If shoes are being thrown at you, its safe to assume you been in politics far far too long and need to retire.

Another day and another glaring illustration of how rapid and insane the right wing has become in this country.

I'll bet it wasn't one of her GOOD shoes.

    But seriously folks....

If burning the US flag is protected free speech when leftists and islamists are throwing a hissy fit, why isn't tossing a shoe protected the same way?

Bush had a shoe thrown at him on foreign soil, and it was thrown by an Iraqi journalist who opposed the US occupation of Iraq. In this case I think what we have is a right wing tea party nut job... the kind of crazies that probably believe the whole foreign born Obama conspiracy theories. Sadly these are the same idiots that give Ted Cruz a pass.

I think the reaction of the liberal press to both incidents is instructive. The negative comments by most of the media about GWB shoe incident were shameful, and the same press tried to make the Hillary incident a victory for her. It shows again how biased the media is for the left wing pinkos. It says a lot about our values and the message is not anything to be proud of.

If you did not understand that Hillary is a very old elderly woman then just watch this "shoe" video...best true representation of her age & health to date...where she could not control the release of her unposed presentation of herself.

Too bad the shoe missed her lying/smirking face!

Alison Ernst should be considered a patriot for NOT accepting more lies and hypocrisy!!!

Wow, it's OK with my fellow Democrats when done to a Republican (Bush), but don't even consider doing it to "what does, at this time, matter Hillary."

My, my, she ducked nearly hours after that shoe missed her.
If that's the way to dodge snipers, you'd wish for a lousy sniper

All staged – will the shoe throw to elevate Hillary to "presidential level" ?
I don't think so. She's not the right man for the job.

Glad others have noticed she is not too feminine – not pressing charges? Ok. That is why this will happen again. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom to assault. Conservatives want the rest of us to revolt against them so they can get rid of us.

I'm only disappointed that the shoe didn't nail Hillary in the forehead with the heal of the shoe. I guess those that were in attendance are simple minded folks that have no morals, they were there supporting the person that had the power to bring home alive those four men in Benghazi, anyone that supports Hillary has to be supporting the murder. They go hand in hand, and that is not a person that deserves any audience. And then to try and protect herself she lies that she didn't know, that is not what I want to see in any leadership position, he acted just hanging out for the ride on the tax dollar and not doing a thing to properly execute the office she was appointed to.

I don't think throwing anything at anyone is OK and reasonable persons will agree. . . Ernst and her ilk are frustrated that they are not getting things their way. . . Displays like this lend credence to the fact of their incompetence.
