Police seek charges against woman for allegedly throwing shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – Las Vegas Police are pursuing disorderly conduct charges against a woman who allegedly threw a shoe at Hillary Clinton during a speech on Thursday.

Alison Ernst, 36, did not have a ticket to the event at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino featuring the former secretary of state, and Secret Service agents assigned to protect her noticed her as she eluded hotel security, according to a U.S. law enforcement account of the incident.

As Secret Service and hotel security approached her, she threw a shoe, which missed Clinton, who had ducked.

Ernst was immediately detained.

A Las Vegas police report said she took the shoe from her purse and that after she was detained, “Ernst appeared to be in an agitated state but aware of what she had just done.”

A U.S. law enforcement official said federal prosecutors in Las Vegas declined to press charges, and Ernst was turned over to local authorities.

Las Vegas Police are recommending disorderly conduct charges be brought against her by Clark County, Nevada, prosecutors.

Ernst has been released with orders to return for a June 24 court date.

Secret Service Special Agent Brian Spellacy said the investigation is ongoing.

Las Vegas police released a booking photo of Ernst. She is pictured with brown hair but can be seen in video footage of the incident wearing what appeared to be a blonde wig.

Clinton ducked as the shoe flew past her, then joked about the incident before delivering her address to a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about a 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration.

She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race, if she decides to run.

CNN's Dan Merica and Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

  1. God MAY NOT be a Liberal, but He IS a Democrat

Further proof that the RepubliCANS and the TaliBAN are cut from the same core DNA. The person who threw a shoe at Bush was hardly a proponent of democracy. The same is true of this woman and ALL THE RIGHT WING BLOGGERS that will defend/ praise her.

  4. Who cares who she is?

First: it was premeditated (the wig and apparently as soon as Hillary Clinton took stage)

Second: this is another example of what the "lovers of Country and Justice" are about. No respect for a political leader who is appearing at a convention to talk; whether you are a democrat or a "normal" republican, this should be worrying you. This lack of respect for the basic act of democracy – a speech – tells a lot

Another reason to give Hillary my vote if she runs for office

    Jilted lover perhaps?
Btw, Clinton first asked if it was a bat. Was that a bat?
    Seriously? A bat.

    @Bill, Bloominton IL
But when a shoe was thrown at W that was ok according to liberals.

Someone from another country threw the shoe at Bush. This was a U.S. citizen who attacked a former Senator, Secretary of State and First Lady. This is OK according to Right Wing Nuts!

This person was exercising her First Amendment right. Neither Clinton's big money nor their league of minions can prevent that. Not everyone will be pushed into another Clinton presidency despite the already massively overmanaged campaign to achieve this result.

Hillary Clinton is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race, if she decides to run? She's running and she will win only because America is full of Democrat Zombies and Republican pacifists that refuse to take a stand for what they believe in. At least the Democrats were honest at their convention and kicked God out three times before Obama intervened on His behalf. Republicans claim everything in the name of all that is good and holy but when it counts they do nothing and stand for nothing with their actions. Let's change all that and force Hillary to run against Rand Paul in 2016.
