Reid calls supporters of Nevada cattle rancher 'domestic terrorists'

(CNN) - Never one to mince words, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, lumped supporters of Bunkerville rancher Cliven Bundy in with the Eric Rudolphs, Richard Reids and Timothy McVeighs.

The senate majority leader labeled those who defended the rancher against a Bureau of Land Management cattle roundup "domestic terrorists" at a Thursday evening question-and-answer session hosted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"Those people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not. They’re nothing more than domestic terrorists,” Reid said. "I repeat: What went on up there was domestic terrorism.”

Reid's remarks come on the heels of a tense, weeklong showdown that drew armed militia groups from across the country to the cattleman's side, especially after a YouTube video captured a tussle teetering on violence between rangers and protesters.

The BLM ultimately decided to shut down its weeklong roundup of Bundy's cattle Saturday after the incident.

Bundy owed nearly $1 million to the government and has avoided paying federal grazing fees for 20 years. His dispute with the government began around 1993 when the bureau changed grazing rules for the 600,000-acre Gold Butte area to protect an endangered desert tortoise, CNN affiliate KLAS reported.

For his part, Reid insisted that the conflict was not over. The Nevada lawmaker said he spoke with both federal and state law officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, and was given assurances a task force would be established to deal with the Bundy case.

“It is an issue that we cannot let go, just walk away from,” Reid said.

While the senator mainly took issue with the hundreds who flocked to Bundy's cause, Reid also jabbed at the rancher's reputation.

"He doesn’t pay his taxes," Reid said. "He doesn’t pay his fees. And he doesn’t follow the law. He continues to thumb his nose at authority.”

Tyrants always accuse those who won't bow to them of being "terrorists". King George said much the same thing about our Founding Fathers...and it didn't go too well for him.

Nothing new here. In the 1770's through the 1780's, what we call patriots were called the equivalent of "domestic terrorists" by the British government.

Welcome to Mr. Reid's neighborhood boys and girls. For our first lesson of the day I have a new word for you. And that word is Terrorist. What is a terrorist? Well a terrorist is anyone who gets in the way of Mr. Reid and his desires. For example, you know Mr. Reid and his friend are keen on developing big shiny solar projects on federal land in Nevada. But there is this mean Mr. Bundy who keeps feeding his cattle on the land, tying it up in the courts while he fights cattle grazing fess for the land, and keeping Mr. Reid from finalizing the deal and make a whole lot of money. So Mr. Bundy is a Terrorist boys and girls, as are any people who support him.

Here it is. We all knew it was just a matter of time before some American somewhere, protesting some thing, would get labeled as a terrorist by someone in Washington. Mark my words: this May just be bluster today, but sometime in the near future Washington will start calling Americans terrorists for real and then throw away Constitutional protections under the carte blanche authority of the Patriot Act. Then they will find themselves hauled off to a gulag like Gitmo, or worse, may find a drone buzzing around over head.

I hope the Republicans take back the Senate and get this old cow out of leadership. Anyone that disagrees with Harry Reid is a terrorist. If he looked real close in the mirror he would know exactly what a terrorist looks like. I have dog biscuits smarter than Pelosi and Reid. lmao

If it was terrorism, I'd like to think our government could have handled that, but maybe not these days.

When people who don't obey the law and won't pay their dues for using our public lands bring an "armed militia" to deal with federal employees from the Bureau of Land Management, yeah that sort of tinpot radicalism should be called "Domestic Terrorism. A special tip of the hat to FOX News for trying so hard to turn it into "the next Waco" (whom, oddly, the GOP also seems to feel warm about...).
Anti-Americanism and domestic terrorism- the new GOP.

I'm a rancher's daughter and have no love whatsoever for the BLM. But this guy is a fraud. He's just avoiding paying his grazing fees. When you don't own the land, you don't get to be the boss of it. Not that the BLM is competent or fair, but the law is the law and it's not his land. If any of us owed $1 million to any landlord, we'd get booted out, too, and that's what he deserves.

How on earth does someone get away with holding out and not paying the government $1,000,000 for over 20 years??
Does the goverment have any teeth at all? 20 years with no resolution???? Pretty disgracefull in my opinion! If it was a person of some other persuasion this wouldn't be happening. The guy has the government in his back pocket apparently!

Seriously cannot believe he used that adjective. That's beyond absurd. Labelling American citizens terrorists in an attempt to dehumanize them is horrible.

This is proof positive Harry Reid needs to be impeached and thrown out of office – he is a disgrace comparing cattle ranchers to terrorists. Facts are, Harry Reid himself is lucky he is not in prison for his association with Las Vegas union thugs and other criminal acts.
