Deleted tweets spark controversy in Illinois gubernatorial race
(CNN) – Amid backlash for tweeting out an article with inflammatory language, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn's campaign said Thursday it didn't thoroughly read the story before blasting it out to its Twitter followers.
A Twitter account for the Democratic governor's re-election campaign, @QuinnForIL, tweeted out an article last week that compared black voters supporting Quinn's Republican challenger, Bruce Rauner, to Jewish people collaborating with the Nazis during World War II against their own people in hopes of being spared the same fate.

Christie denies divisive culture, says he would have stopped lane closures had he known
(CNN) – If Gov. Chris Christie’s administration had come to him beforehand and told him of the plan to close down access lanes at the George Washington Bridge last September he claims he would have stopped them.
“I knew nothing about it, had nothing to do with it, and if anybody had ever come to me and told me they were going to do this I would have stopped it,” the governor said at his 120th town hall meeting in Brick, New Jersey on Thursday.
Obama leaves Japan after defending foreign policy
Tokyo (CNN) – Pressed on whether he would use military force to defend an obscure set of islands controlled by Japan, President Barack Obama offered a robust and sometimes testy defense of his foreign policy as it applies to Ukraine and Syria.
At a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, the President said the U.S. security pact with Japan does extend to the Senkaku islands that are at the heart of a heated dispute with China.

First Lady changes plans after controversy over high school graduation address
(CNN) - Michelle Obama will no longer speak at Kansas high school graduation ceremony after protests that the first lady's presence meant less family members could attend because seating would be more limited.
Instead, the White House announced Thursday, Obama will speak May 16 at a "Senior Recognition Day" - the day before the official graduation.
First lady receives plea from daughter of unemployed man
Washington (CNN) - The children of Executive Office employees crowded into the East Room of the White House on Thursday to ask first lady Michelle Obama a question as part of the White House’s annual celebration of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
While most children used their question to ask Obama about her favorite food or drink or place to travel, one young girl seated in the front row took the opportunity to try to help her unemployed father.
For 6th year in a row, Obama breaks promise to acknowledge Armenian genocide
(CNN) – For the sixth year in a row, President Barack Obama has broken his promise to the Armenian community, made when seeking their votes as a senator and a presidential candidate, to use the word “genocide” to describe the massacre of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire a century ago. He did this in deference to the government of Turkey, which – historical revisionism aside – the Obama administration regards as a more crucial ally.
"It's a sad spectacle to see our President, who came into office having promised to recognize the Armenian Genocide, reduced to enforcing a foreign government's gag-rule on what our country can say about a genocide so very thoroughly documented in our own nation's archives,” Armenian National Committee of America executive director Aram Hamparian said in a statement.

Buxton, North Carolina (CNN) - The wind is whipping up as Taylor Griffin stands on a tiny sliver of sand on Cape Hatteras on a recent afternoon, listening to a family whose entire livelihood might soon tumble into the sea. The Atlantic Ocean is just a few feet away, and high tide is coming in. These are the waves that have been steadily eroding one of the country's most storied beaches for a generation, threatening a pencil-thin stretch of barrier islands, the Outer Banks, that produce hundreds of millions of dollars in yearly tourism revenue for the state.
Carol Dawson and her son, Jeff, own several businesses here, including the Cape Hatteras Motel, an oceanfront structure propped up by wooden beams and, these days, piles of sandbags. The Dawsons complain that the federal government - mainly, the National Park Service and their congressman, Rep. Walter Jones - have abandoned them. Their beaches haven't been nourished in decades, crucial access roads have been breached by hurricanes, and endangered sea turtles are offered more protections than the 4,000 or so full-time residents of Hatteras Island.
