GOP establishment 1, tea party 0 after North Carolina Senate primary

(CNN) - In the intraparty battle for the GOP, score Round 1 for the Republican establishment over the tea party.

CNN projects that North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis has won the state's GOP Senate primary. Tillis, who was backed by many mainstream.

Senate vote on Keystone may not happen

(CNN) - A Senate vote this week to approve the controversial Keystone pipeline- a vote that appears unlikely to pass-now may not happen at all.

The measure, a top priority for Republicans and several centrist Democrats, is entangled in partisan wrangling over a separate energy efficiency bill.

Benghazi panel will have 7 Republicans, 5 Democrats

(CNN) - House Republicans have decided the select committee to investigate the Benghazi terror attack will include seven Republicans and five Democrats, according to two senior House GOP leadership aides.

The House is expected to vote on the legislation establishing the panel later this week.

White House locked down after car is driven into secure area

Washington (CNN) - Officials locked down the White House on Tuesday due to a situation at a street entrance to the complex, according to CNN journalists inside.

The move came after a vehicle followed a motorcade into a secure area at 4:40 p.m., a U.S. Secret Service spokesperson said.

Senator calls for U.S. special forces to rescue Nigerian girls

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Susan Collins told CNN in an interview that she wants the U.S. military to help rescue more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria.

“More can be done by this administration. I would like to see Special Forces deployed to help rescue these young girls. Some of these girls are as young as nine years old,” said Collins.

Bush will host a re-election fundraiser for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad in Coral Gables, Florida on May 22, Branstad's campaign confirmed to CNN.

Ex-Christie official testifies in N.J. bridge scandal

Trenton, New Jersey (CNN) – A former official who worked for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said her office never deliberately put off mayors who disagreed with the administration, and denied claims it kept a secret list of officials to be ignored.

Christina Renna also told a state legislative committee investigating a political scandal roiling Christie’s administration that a central figure in the controversy, Bridget Kelly, could be a difficult manager who was overwhelmed and not always good at making decisions.

Jack Conway announces bid for governor in Kentucky

(CNN) - Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway announced Tuesday that he's running for governor of the commonwealth in 2015.

Conway was the Democratic nominee who ran against Republican Rand Paul for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010. With a wave of tea party-fueled support, the libertarian-leaning Paul beat Conway by 12-percentage points.
