RNC sells t-shirt: 'I'll be damned, I'm a Republican'

(CNN) - The Republican National Committee has apparently embraced a new slogan.

"I'll be damned, I'm a Republican."

The party committee is selling t-shirts boasting the phrase, which originated from Gov. Susana Martinez's personal story of how she realized she was a Republican.

The New Mexico governor, who's running for re-election this year, has frequently shared her story of transitioning from a Democrat to the GOP.

Perhaps most memorably, she recalled the moment during her speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention. She said she and her husband had lunch with some Republican friends and was surprised to find that they agreed on so many things.

"We talked about many issues, like welfare, is it the way of life or hand up? Talked about size of government, how much should it tax families and small businesses? And when we left that lunch, we got in the car and I looked over at Chuck and said, `I'll be damned. We're Republicans.'"

She repeated her story in an email blast Friday from the RNC, saying her team created the t-shirt and added "I want you to be the first to get one."

The shirt can be purchased with a donation of $29 or more to the RNC.

As the nation's first Hispanic woman elected governor and as the chief executive of a blue state, Martinez has been mentioned as a potential presidential contender. She's listed on the RNC's straw poll website of possible candidates.

The shirt also comes weeks after Martinez took some heat over her straight-talking language. Mother Jones published previously unreleased audio recordings of the governor and her aides using coarse language while talking about her political opponents.

Martinez reportedly admitted she's used some four letter words in her life–"I've had to fund the cuss jar a few times"–but went on to blast the news outlet for "peddling false, personal attacks against me, using stolen audiotapes from our debate prep sessions four years ago."

Isn't that what democrats and liberals been saying now for 6 years, dammed republicans, won't lets us spend us into oblivion, won't let us give everything FREE to everyone who votes for us,
    ---------------------------------------
We have had the smallest year to year increases in annual spending in recent history under Pres. Obama. Annual spending has grown at a rate less than inflation, just over 1%. The Clinton administration saw spending grow on average by 2.5-3.5% per year.

George W. Bush increased spending by 7-9% every year that he was in office, and Reagan was even worse than that. Under George H.W. Bush we saw spending grow on average by 5-6% every year. Both GWB and Reagan enacted large tax cuts on the wealthy, which sent the economy into the classic "boom then bust" cycle that those policies have always produced. GHWB raised taxes and we saw a strong economy throughout the 1990s.

Any woman or minority who isn't part of the 1%, yet votes for a republican politician, is an absolute fool.

If she and her husband just discovered that they were really Republicans then they clearly didn't know much about the differences between the two parties. Anybody who's that ignorant shouldn't be in politics. Whoops, 'scuse me. American politics is FULL of dummies like that, isn't it?

Tony, you said "Republicans may have a reason to believe that they are damned. In a sign of the Apocalypse, both the Fox News Poll and the Rasmussen Poll show that the Democrats have a lead in the generic congressional ballot. The Fox News Poll gives Democrats a 3-point lead. The Rasmussen Poll gives Democrats a 2-point lead."

I wish I could agree with your conclusions. Unfortunately, congressional districts have been gerrymandered so wildly in favor of Republican candidates that the generic ballot will not be reflected in the actual electoral results. The best way Democrats have to change that outcome is to focus on electing state legislatures that are more progressive. Since a state district is invariably much smaller than a congressional district, this is easier to do. Things are not likely to change much until after the next census, in 2020. If state governments are controlled by Democratic majorities, the districts will be reapportioned to something far more equitable.

@GunDERPson,LIzzie(better?): please go educate yourself. The national debt has little to do with what any president does, and everything to do with a money supply created as a debt to private bankers. Wake up already

The liberals cannot believe that for the most part we want the same thing. They just want to do it in ways that will not work in the real world.

Leave it to a party who stands up at their own campaign rally and declare they're Godless to lay damnation at the feet of others. Damn those tea shirts! We lost our sense of humor somewhere during the Clinton/Bush years.

It's not much of an advertising campaign.

It's not a bad story, but the point of it was that someone who's political views didn't match their party became aware that their views had changed so their affiliation should as well. The story is good, but the people you'd want to hit with that story aren't going to pay for a 29 dollar shirt before being "converted". And the slogan doesn't convey enough of the message to do the job when they see others wearing it.

It's more likely to be liked by those already Republicans and alienate the people that would be like Martinez in the story.

Liberals fail to realize that for the most part, republicans want the same thing they want. The difference is that liberals want to get it done with plans that ultimately fail over time because they do not work in real life.
