Obama's big environmental move: Demanding power plants cut carbon

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is using his executive authority to take his strongest action yet against climate change - proposing new EPA regulations.

The chief of the Environmental Protection Agency will announce a proposal Monday that would require power plants to cut their carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, a source briefed on the matter told CNN.

People forget that George W. Bush slashed emission regulations as soon as he took office in 2001. It used to be that smoke stacks over a certain size were required to have sensors that monitored and recorded the emissions. Those same systems included automatic dialers, similar to your home burglar alarm panel, that dialed the EPA and transmitted an ID code if the emissions went excessively high for an extended period of time. Not anymore, Bush wiped those requirements off of the books. Records are no longer kept of smoke stack emissions like they were in the past.

The destruction of more American business, and American jobs.......and the increase in cost to the average citizen of electricity.........will continue to destroy the American economy.

Obama's edict, shows how little he really cares about his serfs. As King he cares NOT about the people.

That is the issue if global warming. The GOP call climatologists fear mongers. And the GOP is probably right but perhaps its because a broken planet should be an extremely scary thought. Furthermore scientists who claim the warming of the planet is natural are also probably right. The only problem is because of the extra greenhouse gases, we now may only have a few hundred years before our cycle of clam hospitable climate ends instead of a few ten thousand years. I don't think any scientist will argue the warming of the planet would happen regardless of pollution or not. I think the main argument is at the rate its occurring.

Emissions put into the atmosphere by coal-fired power plants is just one part of the problem. The facts are that carbon dioxide traps heat in the ozone layer, human beings naturally produce carbon dioxide just by exhaling, and there are more human beings on Earth right now than at any other time in the planet's history. So since we can't tell people to stop breathing, it might be a good idea to rethink how we humans consume and produce energy... I'm also aware that I just made an argument based on scientific facts and Republicans largely ignore those.

This is logical and has to be done. Under the previous administration gave big coal the gift of reduced regulation- the results? New dirty coal power plants and the highest carbon measure in our atmosphere ever. If we intend to leave a planet for our children, this is a must-do item.

That's Awful. Much better to destroy America's Children with Dirty Air, Mercury-laden waters. acid rain, etc.

How dare Obama try to clean up our air.

Only in the tinfoil hatted bubble of the righties would it be considered a death chant to do everything we can to protect our environment. Your hyperventilating, hysterical hyperbole is so juvenile and irrational as to suggest mental illness.

You must have no memory at all- Bush crashed the economy, and cut pollution regulations- and to what end? How did your "serfs" do with no jobs? What do you propose they breath? Koch-air? Fool!

I haven't heard too many scientists (Maybe Dr, S. Palin, self-proclaimed know-it-all) claiming that the recent rate of warming, or rate of increase in carbon dioxide in the air, is at all natural.

The gop voters think their smart reciting talking points from those profiting from the industry being the way it is now, they have successfully conned their voting block into believing its all lies, yup, you guys are the smart ones alright, now you should realize just because they tell you these things, does not mean they themselves believe it, because they're not actually believing their more knowledgeable about this than someone who's spent decades researching it, but if you believe their other BS you believe they do, go figure.

1967 is seen as the end of an era for fast cars; it was the last year before national emissions standards. Car magazines were preaching Gloom and Doom for car enthusiasts.

Today, a Honda Accord will outrun a '67 GTO. And get great fuel economy.

Likely, when pushed, the Coal Industry will find a way to economically use coal in a manner that does not damage the atmosphere. That's the way America works: We Find Solutions. You Naysayers have no faith in America.

Two experts CNN will avoid like the plague on this issue: legal scholar Ann Carlson (who explains why these new regs are actually quite business friendly) and economist Eban Goodstein (who explains that these new regs will not cost the average Amurikan must at all).

What you will get instead: "So-and-so RWNJ yelled about the sky falling while David Koch wears his elbow-deep like a puppet...and oh, hey, look over here at this link where we're running a GOP/Teatrolls attack ad about this for free on their behalf."

When American Industry finally gets clean, cheap energy from coal, the Chinese can steal the technology and sell it to the world. Even India can help clean up the atmosphere.

No more deregulation of these monsters. Past regulations, that were effective and fair, were stripped and followed up by defunding all alternative energy research, all in the name of securing unprecendented profits for big fossil fuels. Fossil fuel companies are making all time high profit margins. We dont need 'American Oil independence', we need to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels period, profit margains be damned. Bush took us many many steps backwards, and then start a multi-front war with massive fuel expenditures all in the name of turning a buck, never mind on the back of the tax payers, but on the backs of humanity and planet earth as a whole.

way to go Mr. President. The GOP who has invested heavily in coal and gas don't want to loose any money. It is not that they care about the people or the planet. They have tried to deny global warming for years as it is. Same stupid group that put dinosaurs on the ark. Wake up people. This is a threat to your children and grand children. Not the nonsense about leaving a debt. More jobs in alternative energy can be created. Repos just want to scare everyone. We are tired of your nonsense. No more chicken little.

Right on Bill- that is precisely the analogy I was thinking of. It must simply be the GOP is terrified of changing anything, or advancing technology is any way. Even if Coal can't be fully "clean" there is certainly energy technology to be exploited that is, whether that be solar, wind, geothermal or other as yet untapped energy resources.
