Obama's big environmental move: Demanding power plants cut carbon

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is using his executive authority to take his strongest action yet against climate change - proposing new EPA regulations.

The chief of the Environmental Protection Agency will announce a proposal Monday that would require power plants to cut their carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, a source briefed on the matter told CNN.

What the administration is really doing is an attempt to restore the environmental standards to what they were before GWB/Republicans gutted them in 2001. It used to be that a chemical tank required a berm of sufficient volume equivalent to the volume of the tank inside of it. A berm is a containment pit in case the tank ruptures. Now, that is no longer required. Had the had a sufficiently sized tank berm in West Virginia a couple of months ago, then that disastrous spill probably would not have spilled into the water supply.

There's not one thing wrong with wanting to make the air breathable, and the earth a little cleaner, is there? Oh that';s right, it might add 2 cents to your taxes or utility bill. My Mistake.

rs – " Even if Coal can't be fully "clean" "

In MISSISSIPPI! (go figure) the Southern Company subsidiary, Mississippi Power, has a massive, state-of-the art power plant turning their local 'lignite' ( an element that is between peat and bituminous coal ) into a gas that burns much cleaner than older methods. Still a 'Works-In-Progress', but it's REAL.

The process was developed in Wilsonville, Alabama, by Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF), a research facility of the Department of Energy and The Southern Company.

Leading Technology out of Mississippi and Alabama. Who'd a thunk It??

The worst of the methane production from cattle comes from the feed-lot stage, where thousands of cattle are fattened in a small area, producing massive waste in solid, liquid and gaseous state. This process is now being tried in an enclosed space, where ALL forms of the waste can be recycled.

    Good 'ol American Know-How!

And I hope you righties don't kill of the human species.

"As president, and as a parent, I refuse to condemn our children to a planet that's beyond fixing," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday.

If Obama REALLY cared about the future of our children, he wouldn't be destroying our economy and jobs with this insane nonsense. If Obama REALLY cared about the future of our children, he wouldn't be burying them with a mountain of debt. if Obama REALLY cared about our children he'd resign becuase he is a totally incompetent liar.

Man..... We should be doing whatever we can to become energy independent and to create jobs! Can we please do that First... then worry about pollution in 5 or 10 years? We need to become a strong country again with a booming economy first!!!

Asked about criticism that the move won't make much difference in global climate change efforts without India and China doing the same, Carney said, "The United States has to lead, first of all, and this is an indication that the United States will lead on this very important challenge posed by climate change and global warming."

So finally after 5.5 years Obama thinks he needs to lead and what does he decide to lead in? Killing jobs, our economy and costing us all untold billions in higher electricy costs. Wonderful. Anybody need anymore proof this clown is the worse Presidnet in our history?!!

The good news is all this can get tossed right out the door once a Republican is elected in 2016. Wake up America. Stop the Obama-Democrat madness.

800,000 people thrown out of work. Carlos Sim will be very happy to have all those new ObAma phone users. The net effect of this wholesale destruction of America wii of course fall on the next administration, unless it's Hillary, the it will be blamed on Bush. It's the way democrat liberals play the gme of destroying this country.

“If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them,” Obama said, responding to a question about his cap-and-trade plan. He later added, “Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”
-- Barack Obama, January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board

It is a very, very dangerous thing to elect a far left ideologue that thinks all he needs is a pen and phone to run the USA and dictate to the people, totally bypassing Congress. WIth the VA scandal, it now appears Obama is just throwing it all out there as he knows he's a total lame duck. It is imperative that Republicans take the Senate in 2014 to be able to stop this insanity and protect the country.

What would you have done differently? Remember, he was handed an economy in freefall. We losing 750,00 jobs per month, and the annual budget deficit was $1.5 trillion. We have positive private sector job growth for a few years, and the annual budget deficit has been cut by more than half.

BTW, you are using a noun [democrat] as if it were an adjective. A common practice on the right.

It sure is great that Obama and the Democrats want to raise the minimum wage for people. They will need every cent of it to pay more to the governent and now far more to the electric company. The Messiah giveth and the Messiah taketh away. And after 5.5 years, still record unemployment and more and more job killing insanity.

We all know that coal is the fuel of the 19th and 20th century. Even the Chinese are beginning to convert to gas fired power generation of electricit power. There is nobody in their right mind, who thinks coal is in our future. How many citizens want a coal fired power plant in their back yard? Of course the limiting of emissions in going to cost plenty.....Yet nobody complains when we spend billions on new weapons systems to replace those that become have become obsolete. Well, coal is obsolete as a fuel for power yet emerging nations will still buy our coal so miners and operators, rail roads, container ship owners etc...will suffer little or no financial losses..neither will the manufacturers of scrubbing equipment...so tell me, who stands to gain for the continued pollution of our skys? Anti American conservatives who think they convince their constuantuancy that the sky will fall.....the hell with those Americans who will die early in life because of breathing polluted air!.....

So Obama and the Democrats want to kill all coal use in THIS country, while encouragng and increasing its export to other countries to burn? I'm sure their next step will be to ban the export of coal as that will also help reduce pollution right?

BTW, the air in the USA was in China last week. Air does not adhere to national boundaries. The left is just so clueless it is downright painful to read their drivel.

"Your Nanny has spoken! You will pay attention! What are you doing out of your pajamas! Your nanny knows what is best!"

What does this have to do with "Nanny"? This is a legislate exercise of constitutional executive power to regulate...of the police power. This has nothing to do with government "holding your hand". This has to do with government legitimately policing powerful industries in order to protect our interests, health and welfare where, if left without gov't to do it, we wouldn't be able to protect our interests for ourselves. Your comment is knee-jerk talking point vomit and evinces a lack of critical thought or the ability to analyze and understand the differences between your go-to "nanny" buzzword and other situations that clearly have nothing to do with it. GROW. UP.

Except this isn't going to create costs borne by the American people and will actually help save people money in the long-term. But don't take it from me: go look up what the expert economists are saying about it for your own self.
