(CNN) - A week after a major primary upset that rocked the Republican primary, Dave Brat, the little-known economics professor who defeated Rep. Eric Cantor, kicked off his general election campaign.
CNN caught up with Brat outside his home in Glen Allen, Virginia two days after his primary win. But his remarks Tuesday at a Rotary Club breakfast in Richmond mark his first official public appearance since toppling the majority leader in the GOP primary in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

"Today, we're hitting the ground running, meeting with people across the 7th District," he said, echoing a populist refrain he's repeated since his unexpected win against a Republican House leader.
"When we knocked on doors and spoke to thousands of people on the campaign trail, we found that they were eager to send someone to Washington who has a deep understanding of economics and that can actually help to fix the real problems we face in this country."

On Monday, Brat's campaign released a video showing the GOP congressional nominee shaking hands with a group of staffers, congratulating him on his victory.
Brat also announced the expansion of his minimal campaign staff with the hire of a communications director, Brian Gottstein.
Fresh off his unanticipated win, Brat will attend two more events this week in his district - an area anchored in the northern and western suburbs of Richmond but that stretches some 100 miles from the Tidewater to the outer reaches of the Washington exurbs.
Brat is now considered the favorite to win the reliably conservative district in November's general election.
His Democratic opponent in November, Jack Trammell, also teaches at the school outside Richmond.
CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.
Mr. Brat, you have no stance on the minimum wage. There aren't a bunch of millionaires in the 7th district. It's country, backwoods, redneck country. There aren't a bunch of high paying jobs. Phillip-Morris and Anthem are probably the highest paying middle class jobs in that district. But anyway, it must be a slow news day CNN. Why no article on Ahmed Abu Khattala(Benghazi Attacker)?
From David Brat's site: "Dave will protect the rights of the unborn and the sanctity of marriage, and will oppose any governmental intrusion upon the conscience of people of faith."

Watch out – that is right wing talk for radical Christian Theocracy!
Keep our country free and say NO to a one-sect Theocracy.
I hope that it is a costly fight that he is unprepared for come the fall election. If he is unwilling to talk to the other side of the political isle, then he doesn't belong in Congress but on some radio show that people shouldn't be listening to in the first place.

He's a Republican who believes that we need a vibrant growing economy where people don't have to fight over the scraps of minimum wage jobs. We have that now because of Obama and the Democrats who have done everything they could to cripple our economy. Fight for good high payings jobs with Republicans in charge or stick with what we have now, record unemployment as well as under employment, and low paying jobs for minimum wage. Your choice America. Don't screw up again. The country is running out of time.
The man's only political achievement thus far is whipping voters in a reliably Republican district into a racist frenzy by claiming Cantor supports amnesty. How impressive! I don't know about the rest of you but I thinking a cure for cancer and world peace are well within reach by the end of this genius' first term.
"Why no article on Ahmed Abu Khattala(Benghazi Attacker)?"
It wrecks their nontroversy on Benghazi and shows this was a criminal act perptrated by a bad guy and not a secret planned murder orchestrated by Hillary and President Obama on the eve of the election to somehow... something something... something...

From what I understand, dude wants God to be in charge of our economic policy making decisions. Then again, he also wants to promote Ayn Rand economic policy making decisions.
Some might suggest he's showing off his speaking in tongues credentials.
like all the rest of them, once they start talking, you realize how simple minded views are in a complicated world. If one reasearches the true root causes, you will see where the issues arised from, maximizing of profits that only generate massive profits for certain people, while keeping the profits low for the actual consumers are why we are in the situation we are currently are. Anything Brat says, does not identify that problem, only points fingers in the direction of scape goat boogey men based on the conspiracy theories, of high paid entertainers. The math on the current minimum wage makes it impossible for people to consume, only get by, while allowing the payers of that wage (not the small business men, the corporate ones), to reap in the higher salaries, at the expense of the tax payer.

So if we are all poor who is going to foot the bill for all of the leftists grand plans for us all???
Fact is there have ALWAYS been rich people and poor people here and everywhere else. Fact is there will ALWAYS be rich people and poor people. The old Soviet Union showed what happens when you let the government try and run your life and the economy. China was smart enough to adapt and now reaps the benefits of some capitalism.
Cantor is an idiot, to become a very rich lobbying idiot, but this brat is worse.
The loser tried to keep his religion quiet but this brat thanked god, during his speech, more times than the amount of votes he received!
This is just a demo of what's going to happen in November when this GOP do nothing house is going to get annilated in the next wave election FOR the dems , not AGAINEST them as being forecasted by the GOP party of stupid. The teaparty had nothing to do with cantors loss. The fact is cantor wouldn't even approve flood aid for his own state with out strings attached. This out of touch moron had to go like most of the rest of the GOP in November , the only ones predicting victory are the republicans BEFORE we even vote and when are you going to pay back the 24 BILLION you LOST in 16 days, did you think we forgot??????? GOP MORONS!!

Theoretically, Silence DoGood should be chastising you for quoting a religious authority. Meh... doubt it.
Dave Brat is living in the past , economics before environment , profit before sustainability , revenue over resources .
The battle cry of the Tea Drinking Creationists , God gave us the planet Earth to destroy , so we can be saved ?
Whazzat?
No stance on minimum wage? Now who here not educated enough to get more than minimum wage? Oh, what? All of you? Well old Gunderson no like that! Why you no get no learning? You have go school get more than minimum wage! But, who can say Obama Care. Who can say No Job! Who can say Horray for Obama! You dreamer. you.

"Fight for good, high paying jobs with Republicans." What does that mean? What is the action plan that turns those altruistic words into actual jobs? I don't hear any actual policy in those words, just a lot of the same meaningless speeches that I've heard for decades from Republicans. "Rah, Rah, Rah." Empty rhetoric, that's all it is. No plan beyond cutting taxes for the wealthy.
@ Donna,
Please describe the connection between eliminating the minimum wage and how that creates high-paying jobs that will somehow replace those minimum wage jobs. Anyone who thinks that an economy can function without a wage that manages to keep pace with the cost of living is someone who has either never held a job or is so deluded by Conservative claptrap about economic freedom that they cannot see the evidence of their own eyes.
Donna, since when is equal opportunity a sin? There are no equal outcomes in life, but for you to suddenly use Communist China as a role model shows how morally and ethically bankrupt you really are. If you have your way, we will be like them, because the Right will never tolerate a dissenting voice in their party, much less the government if we are so unfortunate as to let them get their oligarchical paws on it.

yes, and the GOP is doing everything it can to make that an even more discernible difference.
All but a sure win for the Democrat, the handwriting is there, see it yet gop, we can still win Ohio, you guys kill me. I love the smell of desperation in the morning.
This guy is going to get beaten like a red headed step child, I of course will enjoy watching the gop go down, one by one.
