Sales of Clinton's 'Hard Choices' drop by over 40% in second week

Washington (CNN) – Hillary Clinton's new memoir "Hard Choices" experienced a 43% drop in sales in its second week on bookshelves, according to numbers from Nielsen BookScan.

After 85,721 copies of "Hard Choices" were purchased in the book's first week, 48,227 copies of the memoir sold in the second week, according to Nielsen numbers, which make up roughly 85% of all retail book sales and were provided to CNN by a publishing source.

These figures do not include e-books or digital downloads, but could foretell problems for "Hard Choices" to sell the first run of copies that the book's publisher, Simon & Schuster, has already ordered. The publisher told CNN last week that the book sold roughly 100,000 copies in the first week when you include digital purchases.

There is good and bad news in the numbers for Clinton and her allies.

The good news: While her first memoir, "Living History," sold 438,000 copies in its first week, it experienced a 62% drop off in the second week. So comparatively, "Hard Choices" didn't have as big a fall.

"Living History" would go on to sell 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen.

The bad news is that Clinton critics who have been closely watching how her 656-page tome to American diplomacy and her time at state will likely be given ammunition with this first to second week drop off.

Jason Pinter, founder and publisher of Polis Books, said the decline is "not at all" surprising.

"Publicity-driven books like this are always front-loaded," Pinter said. "Which is why the first week numbers were likely a cause for concern-they were only going to go down from there."

Clinton has been on a frenetic, cross-country book tour since her memoir went on sale on June 10. She has held events in every American time zone, as well as in Canada, and has sat down for high profile interviews with all major TV networks.

Clinton on wealth missteps: 'My record speaks for itself'

But Pinter said no matter how much Clinton sells the book, the "reviews were tepid enough to squelch interest from everyone but hardcore Hillary devotees."

Simon & Schuster has maintained that they are happy with how the book has performed. Last week, Jonathan Karp, the president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said in a statement that they were "confident we have a major bestseller."

"Simon & Schuster is thrilled with Hard Choices' strong start right out of the gate, and the terrific feedback we're hearing from reviewers, retailers, and, most importantly, readers,” Karp said. “Hard Choices is on a trajectory to being the best-selling nonfiction book of the year."

While "Hard Choices" topped the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover nonfiction for its first week, it finished fourth when you included hardcover and paperback sales. The book has also dropped out of the top 20 on Amazon's bestsellers list.

In an effort to boost international book sales, the former secretary of state will make appearances in France and Germany in July, according to Simon & Schuster.

But what about the chapter that details the harrowing pursuit and capture of the nefarious YouTube film maker, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who's film caused a "spontaneous group of protestors" to strike out and assassinate an US Ambassador?!

Oh wait... Just a few weeks ago they 'captured' the "mastermind" who plotted a highly coordinated attack by heavily armed and highly trained militia.

Is this really political news? Are the book sales figures being connected to her gaffes on her book tour about being in debt?

The poor dear will no doubt have to go on welfare. How will she and Bill ever survive without the income from the sales of this masterpiece? Another right wing ploy, no doubt.

So did Simon & Schuster bribe “Hildebeest”?

Did “Hildebeest” just accept a pay off?

    Aw, so,
Let's face it folks. Hillary isn't nearly as interesting as Richard Nixon was. Every time the News needed a hard hitting news story they did a Nixon Story. Nobody wants to read about Hillary. Where is that next Richard Nixon?

Not to hard to understand why a book with only half the real stories, a self promotional, full of part truths- that sales drop after people learn what is in it or more likely what is not in it.

Looking at the picture of Hillary now and the one one the book cover makes one wonder if it it was written 20 years ago – who chose the cover - trying to make Hillary seem younger to the uninformed voters who will believe the picture on the book is the Hillary of now – think not.

What is wrong with CNN. Of course book sales went down the 2nd week. Folks who just had to have it immediately rushed out to buy it immediately. Folks like me, who rarely run right out to get a book, will wait until their local library gets it or they see it on sale somewhere. These book sales reports don't mean a thing. Shame on CNN for trying to make something out of nothing.

Who cares ! Look at pictures of President Obama taken 8 yrs ago and look at him now. We all get older and Hillary is just getting torn apart because she is a woman. She runs, she wins ! Plain and simple.

    "She runs, she wins."

You know, I hadn't quite made up my mind whether I would support her or not (not to be confused with whether I vote for her or not); but with the garbage I'm starting to hear coming from the right (and yes, the left as well), I may end up jumping on her bandwagon after all.

If they keep it up; I'm all in.

Sounds like a totally logical reason to vote for the leader of the country and of the free world! Unbelievable. This is exactly how we ended up with the totally incompetent failure in the White House today. Democrats aren't target just the low IQ voters anymore, they are going for the zero IQ voters.

Would that be the reason the lowest educated states voted for Mittens? President Obama is far from a failure, if any of the GOP had to deal with the BS he's had to deal with since being elected, they'd have jumped out a window by now.
You people are pathetic, you think President Obama is directly responsible for everything every federal employee does, yet Chris Christy isn't even responsible for the acts committed by those in the next office.
