Sales of Clinton's 'Hard Choices' drop by over 40% in second week

Washington (CNN) – Hillary Clinton's new memoir "Hard Choices" experienced a 43% drop in sales in its second week on bookshelves, according to numbers from Nielsen BookScan.

After 85,721 copies of "Hard Choices" were purchased in the book's first week, 48,227 copies of the memoir sold in the second week, according to Nielsen numbers, which make up roughly 85% of all retail book sales and were provided to CNN by a publishing source.

[twitter-follow screen_name='politicalticker'][twitter-follow screen_name='danmericacnn']

These figures do not include e-books or digital downloads, but could foretell problems for "Hard Choices" to sell the first run of copies that the book's publisher, Simon & Schuster, has already ordered. The publisher told CNN last week that the book sold roughly 100,000 copies in the first week when you include digital purchases.

There is good and bad news in the numbers for Clinton and her allies.

The good news: While her first memoir, "Living History," sold 438,000 copies in its first week, it experienced a 62% drop off in the second week. So comparatively, "Hard Choices" didn't have as big a fall.

"Living History" would go on to sell 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen.

The bad news is that Clinton critics who have been closely watching how her 656-page tome to American diplomacy and her time at state will likely be given ammunition with this first to second week drop off.

Jason Pinter, founder and publisher of Polis Books, said the decline is "not at all" surprising.

"Publicity-driven books like this are always front-loaded," Pinter said. "Which is why the first week numbers were likely a cause for concern-they were only going to go down from there."

Clinton has been on a frenetic, cross-country book tour since her memoir went on sale on June 10. She has held events in every American time zone, as well as in Canada, and has sat down for high profile interviews with all major TV networks.

Clinton on wealth missteps: 'My record speaks for itself'

But Pinter said no matter how much Clinton sells the book, the "reviews were tepid enough to squelch interest from everyone but hardcore Hillary devotees."

Simon & Schuster has maintained that they are happy with how the book has performed. Last week, Jonathan Karp, the president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said in a statement that they were "confident we have a major bestseller."

"Simon & Schuster is thrilled with Hard Choices' strong start right out of the gate, and the terrific feedback we're hearing from reviewers, retailers, and, most importantly, readers,” Karp said. “Hard Choices is on a trajectory to being the best-selling nonfiction book of the year."

While "Hard Choices" topped the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover nonfiction for its first week, it finished fourth when you included hardcover and paperback sales. The book has also dropped out of the top 20 on Amazon's bestsellers list.

In an effort to boost international book sales, the former secretary of state will make appearances in France and Germany in July, according to Simon & Schuster.

Yeah. Good thing I live in the good old United States of America and can still cast my vote for whomever I choose for whatever reason I choose. No doubt the same choices apply to you as well.

Would that be the reason the lowest educated states voted for Mittens? President Obama is far from a failure, if any of the GOP had to deal with the BS he's had to deal with since being elected, they'd have jumped out a window by now.
You people are pathetic, you think President Obama is directly responsible for everything every federal employee does, yet Chris Christy isn't even responsible for the acts committed by those in the next office.
    --

Excuses, excuses, excuses, nothing but excuses for nearly SIX YEARS now. Yes, after SIX YEARS I do hold Obama responsible for things and even a lot of Democrats are admitting he is a failure at this point. Every problem seems to be discovered reading the morning newspaper with this idiot. He is obviously NOT doing the job he was elected to do, RUN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND ENFORCE OUR LAWS faithfully and competently. He is now polling in the 30s and that is even skewed because of brain dead unobjective people like you and others in here that simply cannot bring themselves to admit they made a very big mistake by voting for this incompetent.

You know, I hadn't quite made up my mind whether I would support her or not (not to be confused with whether I vote for her or not); but with the garbage I'm starting to hear coming from the right (and yes, the left as well), I may end up jumping on her bandwagon after all.
If they keep it up; I'm all in.

Sounds like a totally logical reason to vote for the leader of the country and of the free world! Unbelievable. This is exactly how we ended up with the totally incompetent failure in the White House today. Democrats aren't target just the low IQ voters anymore, they are going for the zero IQ voters.

The random conspiracy attacks from the right reveal a conservative morality that people generally recoil from when they get a raw look at it. Look at recent Tea Party fails. If the alternative to Ms.Clinton is a corporate theocracy candidate, you bet a lot of voters would go with her instead.

Goodness. Such contempt you express towards another's opinion. I'm not sure how necessary it is overall, but hey, if it helps you bolster YOUR opinion by calling others "brain dead" ... so be it.

No amount of ridiculous name-calling is going to change that FACT, nor the FACT that the Rethuglikkklans have had NO ONE and NOTHING to offer this country for well over 16 years.

Our local Fox station is going overboard with the whining here. They are complaining that the democrat challenging the GOP Governor is doing nothing but attacking him but not saying what he will do. Why are they complaining isn't that the GOP way? That's exactly what they're doing to President Obama.

News? Hardly. Political bio/autobios rarely do well. They are there for candidate promotion- and if you think about it, people of the same party feel they don't need to read it, and members of the other party won't. Remember Palin's books? Right to the $4 sale tables a week or two after release. I bet many political bios/autobios head almost directly from the publisher to the pulper.

Excuses? All that the Republican Party has done for the last six years is pout and whine about everything. When the right wing noise machine is ignored, then they want to cry about no one is listening to them. The GOP has turned into a bunch of "Craay Eddies". "They're insane."

Voted for him twice and haven't regretted a minute of it. I used to vote GOP (For Ford way back), but the GOP has nothing but radicalized idiots and posers. The GOP isn't interested in leading our great nation. They have a six year record of doing absolutely nothing, or simply breaking the mechanism of government. That isn't leadership- and it is certainly a sound reason to never vote for these losers ever again.

Book sales? Who cares? Didn't Hillary Clinton already get her mega-millions up front? This is all about her unannounced but in full swing campaign, all the free publicity, pumping her up with endless stories in the media, on the Ticker. Hillary Clinton's real problem is she is really messing up and people aren't believing her lies anymore. Every new poll that comes out has her lower and lower. Even 30% of Democrats don't like her!

"With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they'd they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator. Now, honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The IC has a process, I understand, going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear, it is, from my perspective, less important today looking backwards as to why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we'll figure out what was going on in the meantime."

I would go as far as to say that it reveals a somplete LACK of morality and a particular propensity towards looking out for the interests of their big-contributors and corporate masters and not the little people that elected them into office in the first place.
The GOP has dropped in the past 6 years ALL pretense at caring for Americans, at perfoming their sworn duties in offce on behalf of all Americans, at respecting the office of the President while THIS President is in it.
They have done nothng if not double-down on their bigotry, and bias against many segments of the polulation: women, gays, "minorities", the poor, the sick, the disenfranchised.
I wouldn't vote Republican in this day and age and I hold up their behaviour these past six years to actively discourage people from so doing.

If she had just come clean and revealed the truth about Benghazi, tell the truth about what she and Obama did and did not do, the book would have been a best seller. But she decided to stick to her lies and fiction. The book is just like her, a fraud and a dud.
