Sales of Clinton's 'Hard Choices' drop by over 40% in second week

Washington (CNN) – Hillary Clinton's new memoir "Hard Choices" experienced a 43% drop in sales in its second week on bookshelves, according to numbers from Nielsen BookScan.

After 85,721 copies of "Hard Choices" were purchased in the book's first week, 48,227 copies of the memoir sold in the second week, according to Nielsen numbers, which make up roughly 85% of all retail book sales and were provided to CNN by a publishing source.

[twitter-follow screen_name='politicalticker'][twitter-follow screen_name='danmericacnn']

These figures do not include e-books or digital downloads, but could foretell problems for "Hard Choices" to sell the first run of copies that the book's publisher, Simon & Schuster, has already ordered. The publisher told CNN last week that the book sold roughly 100,000 copies in the first week when you include digital purchases.

There is good and bad news in the numbers for Clinton and her allies.

The good news: While her first memoir, "Living History," sold 438,000 copies in its first week, it experienced a 62% drop off in the second week. So comparatively, "Hard Choices" didn't have as big a fall.

"Living History" would go on to sell 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen.

The bad news is that Clinton critics who have been closely watching how her 656-page tome to American diplomacy and her time at state will likely be given ammunition with this first to second week drop off.

Jason Pinter, founder and publisher of Polis Books, said the decline is "not at all" surprising.

"Publicity-driven books like this are always front-loaded," Pinter said. "Which is why the first week numbers were likely a cause for concern-they were only going to go down from there."

Clinton has been on a frenetic, cross-country book tour since her memoir went on sale on June 10. She has held events in every American time zone, as well as in Canada, and has sat down for high profile interviews with all major TV networks.

Clinton on wealth missteps: 'My record speaks for itself'

But Pinter said no matter how much Clinton sells the book, the "reviews were tepid enough to squelch interest from everyone but hardcore Hillary devotees."

Simon & Schuster has maintained that they are happy with how the book has performed. Last week, Jonathan Karp, the president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said in a statement that they were "confident we have a major bestseller."

"Simon & Schuster is thrilled with Hard Choices' strong start right out of the gate, and the terrific feedback we're hearing from reviewers, retailers, and, most importantly, readers,” Karp said. β€œHard Choices is on a trajectory to being the best-selling nonfiction book of the year."

While "Hard Choices" topped the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover nonfiction for its first week, it finished fourth when you included hardcover and paperback sales. The book has also dropped out of the top 20 on Amazon's bestsellers list.

In an effort to boost international book sales, the former secretary of state will make appearances in France and Germany in July, according to Simon & Schuster.

If the alternative to Ms.Clinton is a corporate theocracy candidate, you bet a lot of voters would go with her instead.

Hillary Clinton served on the Board of Walmart!! Talk about a corporate theocracy candidate!! You clowns crack me up with this drivel.
    -------–
She did – you're correct. And on the other side of the balance, the GOP/TP is continuously doing everything they can to support corporate abuse every day. So if I have to choose between Clinton and the GOP, I choose Clinton.

Also you might want to look up theocracy. I don't see any evidence of Clinton supporting that.

If she had just come clean and revealed the truth about Benghazi, tell the truth about what she and Obama did and did not do, the book would have been a best seller. But she decided to stick to her lies and fiction. The book is just like her, a fraud and a dud.

Again? Regardless of what the right wing radio ranters say, she did and the transcript is easy to find online from ALL the hearings. But you cover your ears and chant "la la la la la la la la la Limbaugh"

Have you ever thought maybe she was telling the truth? Just because a person doesn't give the answers you want to hear doesn't make them a liar. There have been 7 or 8 investigations and they've all concluded the same thing. But that's what sometimes happens when you're in war torn countries. But by all means please continue to search πŸ“πŸ“ patches for 🐘🐘. I'm sure they're there somewhere....

The Gop just want lies not the truth about Benghazi the type of lies that would implicate the President, and dumb Americans are following this.

That's the balance of power between 2 of the 3 branches of government.
That is actually how the founders intended it to work.
Only a conservative get into an emotional self righteous fret over normal operation of a peaceful lawful government.

Husband's idea of hard choices: Trying to decide whether to should pay to get the roof fixed, or to get new brakes for car (both are sorely needed, ( can only afford one of them). Hillary Clinton's idea of a hard choice: Which dress to wear at the next TV interview.

no, actually it is exactly what jfk did in a recession, and what obama did as well. so if it stimulates the economy in a recession, why wouldn't it also stimulate the economy if it is not in a recession? the answer is clear but you are too dumb to see and admit it. more money to spend, more economic activity, more jobs, more people working and paying taxes (income and sale), fewer people on the government dole, etc. is this any help for you???

In other under reported news, Thad Cochran's victory over Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel has been credited to a surprise turnout of voters in predominantly black precincts. McDaniel has yet to concede the election, by raising the suggestion of cheating and voter fraud by the black voters. This unsubstantiated allegation has led to significant divide among Republicans, conservatives, and even Tea Party members.

One side feels that Cochran followed the law and used it to his advantage. The McDaniel side says that black voters should not have voted for a Republican in a primary if they have no intention of voting for that candidate in the general election. It would seem that black voters are entirely not welcome in the McDaniel camp.

Um. No. It was a concern of mine. Now that the SCOTUS has decided, I accept their decision, which will in part be used in consecutive administrations. BTW: you really need to stop with "the gang" talking points. Three quarters of the time you've no idea what your talking about. One might even suggest your are purposely attempting to deceive.

As Hillary's book goes, so goes her chances of becoming the next President.

Hillary's a has-been with too much past that can't be explained away. And who in their right mind—in particular, what Democrat—would want to inherit the mess left by Obama?

McDaniel supporters and general radical right ranters are complaining about the black votes. They are saying they shouldn't count. Doesn't that kind of validate WHY the black vote went against them? I think the Tea Party would win most elections hands down if they could just invalidate all those minority and women's votes.
