Louisiana congressman: Remove Reid as majority leader to pass Keystone in Senate

(CNN) - Rep. Bill Cassidy has one solution for moving legislation on the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Senate: Remove its top obstructionist.

“We must stop Harry Reid and the senators who support him from blocking the Keystone XL pipeline – blocking the jobs, the opportunity that it creates,” Cassidy said in a weekly GOP address. “It’s time to retire Harry Reid as the leader of the Senate.”

The House voted 238-173 on Tuesday in favor of a bill that would push the pipeline forward by eliminating a requirement in which oil and gas pipelines that cross U.S. borders get a permit from the White House. The bill passed with 17 Democrats voting in favor of the measure, despite a veto threat from the White House.

A similar bill in the Senate was blocked the same day by Senate Democrats, whom Cassidy says don’t care about the economic well-being of American families.

“President Obama and his allies like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more interested in rolling out the red tape than the red carpet for these jobs,” Cassidy said.

“Sadly, Democrats in Washington stand with President Obama rather than standing with hard-working families in Louisiana and elsewhere. They would rather your family struggle than offend their political base.”

Reid has said that he would consider bringing a vote on the matter to the Senate floor so long as Republicans would allow a vote on a bipartisan energy efficiency bill.

In his address, Cassidy cites the State Department in saying that the pipeline would cause negligible harm to the environment and even saves lives, as there are fewer accidents shipping oil by pipeline as opposed to rail or truck.

He also argues that jobs created by the construction of the pipeline would provide Americans with the opportunity to pursue their dreams

“You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.”

those tar sands are for china, not the u.s. it just saves billions in future transportation costs. canada should just build their own refinery to process the tar sands... and jobs 35 permanent jobs but hundreds lost from transportation.

The tea party and Sharon Angle thought like Cassidy. Get rid of Harry Reid they screamed. Sharon Angle ran from reporters and pulled the old tea party implosion with her mouth like they always do.

Republicans should ask those who's property is being stolen by the keystone pipeline what they think before running their mouths and spreading more fear and propaganda

There are virtually no jobs to be lost by not doing the pipeline. There is no "energy independence" to be gained from the pipeline. The only ones who will benefit from the pipeline are the oil barons. There's a great reason to put our aquifers in jeopardy: Make the rich guys richer while they continue to soak everyone else at the gas pump.

The American Jobs Act of 2011 by President Obama would have provided 1.9 million jobs and fixed our schools, highways, bridges, airports, ports, sewer systems, water systems, power grids, tunnels, roads, etc. Instead of the Keystone that would hurt the main water aquifers and the oil would be shipped to China. Jobs? 5,000 temporarily to build it then only a few to check on it. Which opportunity makes more sense?

The bill as written allows foreign produced pipe and allows for foreign companies to build. Remove those provisions and the bill might pass.

Oil sand is one of the most dangerous and deadly forms there is.Aside from the explosive nature of it the danger of a spill that can,t be cleaned up is even more threatening. We can put more people to work using solar and wind energy with none of the bad side affects,Its a no brainer....

and lets not forget blocking the enormous profits the oil and gas industry would get sending their product through the US to ship to China and other foreign markets.

Mustn't forget the import things about this argument.

Want to get rid of Reid?

All we do is what the Democrats did in Mississippi during the Republican primary.

You do not have to be a Democrat to vote in a Democratic Primary.

All Republicans vote in the Democratic Primary and Reid will be gone before the Nov. Election.

We can pay him back for all his corruption!

Eco-Terrorists would rather have us buy oil from countries that are adversaries rather then from an ally who is much more environmentally conscious. It is all about disrupting the U.S. economy not the environment..

Yes, the opportunity to have sludge that's even worse than oil and harder to clean up, from flowing through unregulated pipes that have been proven to rupture, that will go through our country. I mean, who Wouldn't want the opportunity of their drinking water and home property value to go down to zero, when this tar sludge bubbles up?
Look up the type of pipe they're proposing; if there's a rupture, it has no detector to inform when or where it occurred; so thousands of gallons of it bubble up to the surface before they realize something is wrong.
To Cassidy, a few hundred jobs are more important than the safety of millions of people. And Reid is evil because he's trying to protect us from yet another oil spill
