Louisiana congressman: Remove Reid as majority leader to pass Keystone in Senate

(CNN) - Rep. Bill Cassidy has one solution for moving legislation on the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Senate: Remove its top obstructionist.

“We must stop Harry Reid and the senators who support him from blocking the Keystone XL pipeline – blocking the jobs, the opportunity that it creates,” Cassidy said in a weekly GOP address. “It’s time to retire Harry Reid as the leader of the Senate.”

The House voted 238-173 on Tuesday in favor of a bill that would push the pipeline forward by eliminating a requirement in which oil and gas pipelines that cross U.S. borders get a permit from the White House. The bill passed with 17 Democrats voting in favor of the measure, despite a veto threat from the White House.

A similar bill in the Senate was blocked the same day by Senate Democrats, whom Cassidy says don’t care about the economic well-being of American families.

“President Obama and his allies like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more interested in rolling out the red tape than the red carpet for these jobs,” Cassidy said.

“Sadly, Democrats in Washington stand with President Obama rather than standing with hard-working families in Louisiana and elsewhere. They would rather your family struggle than offend their political base.”

Reid has said that he would consider bringing a vote on the matter to the Senate floor so long as Republicans would allow a vote on a bipartisan energy efficiency bill.

In his address, Cassidy cites the State Department in saying that the pipeline would cause negligible harm to the environment and even saves lives, as there are fewer accidents shipping oil by pipeline as opposed to rail or truck.

He also argues that jobs created by the construction of the pipeline would provide Americans with the opportunity to pursue their dreams

“You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.”

That from the crew that won't pass a jobs bill, an infrastructure bill, etc. and has obstructed every attempt at jobs this president has tried.

Doesn't matter how bad we would like the pipeline. RADICAL LIBERAL CONTRIBTIONS take priority. ONE billionaire liberal will never let this pipeline happen or he will cut fund you the elite and greedy left. How that for lobbing?

Reid is an obstructionist making it impossible for congress to work together as hundreds of American job friendly bills from Republicans sit on his desk.

For one the jobs created will be short term with very few being permanent!!! Secondly, the US will never see a drop of the oil cause it will be sold on the open market and providing no relief at the gas pump!!!

Are there more reasons for not implementing the plan to build it...YES,but I will kepp it as a short posting!!!

There are also plenty of studies out there saying that these jobs are no better than a seasonal position. In other words, they aren't permanent jobs. Many of those jobs will be performed by workers already employed by the companies that get the work. Meaning the actual number of jobs added will not be something remarkable.

But what these politicians do not want to tell you about are the negatives. That studies have shown that gas prices in the upper Midwest will INCREASE after the pipeline is in service. That land owners in many of the places the pipeline is planned to go through have refused the miniscule compensatory payment the oil company building the pipeline has offered (one got offered a one-time $70k payment for a sizable piece of land that will help earn the company billions every year). That the number of oil spills on land in the Dakotas (where the pipeline will run through) has already been increasing. We need someone with the power to say 'Wait a minute', because history has continously shown that big business will not hesitate to pollute the ground, destroy everything in their path, and abuse the people.

Ok, we know that Boehner has a ton of stock in Keystone. If it's built, he makes millions. So what does Cassidy stand to gain by this? Quid pro quo. Follow the money.

Excellent idea, but dingy harry has Nevada big shots in his hip pocket, including the big casino's, so ousting this radical twit will be very difficult. He has made millions and millions off of crooked land deals and Lord knows what else in that state, and it is DEFINITELY time for this treacherous crook to go away.

I believe those states which tend to benefit the most from the Keystone Pipeline are which do not support Pres. Obama. If they did, I believe we would already have the pipeline in process. Reid follows Obama's lead. Obama
does not like or appreciate those who question his actions. Shame that such an important and beneficial issue to
our economy suffers from such an ego.

Reid needs to retire! Why don't the Democrats want our great country prosper? US citizens need jobs and we NEED the oil to boost our economy instead of importing oil at outrageous prices!

I can remember a gallon of gas in the early 70's was $0.49 per gallon! Now we pay over $4.00 gallon!

  22. Amazing

Cassidy, let's make a deal! You get rid of Boehner and we get rid of Reid. You talk like you and your cronies in the House have done something. You have done nothing but pout like a little kid versus truly working with the President to find solutions for this country's problems.

This is just being to done to appease the president because he promised the Tribes in South Dakota that he would not put
the pipeline through their Holy Grounds of Worship for all Tribes. You need to realize that the pipeline is already laid i
through Kansas and has been paid for to the landowners about 3 to 4 years ago...so what does that tell everyone? It could
be that it is already laid north of Kansas?
