Louisiana congressman: Remove Reid as majority leader to pass Keystone in Senate

(CNN) - Rep. Bill Cassidy has one solution for moving legislation on the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Senate: Remove its top obstructionist.

“We must stop Harry Reid and the senators who support him from blocking the Keystone XL pipeline – blocking the jobs, the opportunity that it creates,” Cassidy said in a weekly GOP address. “It’s time to retire Harry Reid as the leader of the Senate.”

The House voted 238-173 on Tuesday in favor of a bill that would push the pipeline forward by eliminating a requirement in which oil and gas pipelines that cross U.S. borders get a permit from the White House. The bill passed with 17 Democrats voting in favor of the measure, despite a veto threat from the White House.

A similar bill in the Senate was blocked the same day by Senate Democrats, whom Cassidy says don’t care about the economic well-being of American families.

“President Obama and his allies like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more interested in rolling out the red tape than the red carpet for these jobs,” Cassidy said.

“Sadly, Democrats in Washington stand with President Obama rather than standing with hard-working families in Louisiana and elsewhere. They would rather your family struggle than offend their political base.”

Reid has said that he would consider bringing a vote on the matter to the Senate floor so long as Republicans would allow a vote on a bipartisan energy efficiency bill.

In his address, Cassidy cites the State Department in saying that the pipeline would cause negligible harm to the environment and even saves lives, as there are fewer accidents shipping oil by pipeline as opposed to rail or truck.

He also argues that jobs created by the construction of the pipeline would provide Americans with the opportunity to pursue their dreams

“You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.”

What ever Harry Reid is involved with, you can bet its because King Obama told him to do it. Nevada needs a senator who will support them and not the Party. Reid should retire before they wheel him out.

Harry will never allow a vote on anything that might get one of his democrat Senators that's running for reelection in trouble, or that Obama and his green patrons won't like. When Obama complains about obstruction in the Congress he should point straight at his henchman Harry da Reid.

Just a friendly grammatical tip, Sara. In Paragraph 4 the use of "whom" is incorrect. It should be "who" since that pronoun is the subject of a very (don't care). Take out the words "Cassidy says" and read your sentence aloud. "Who" sounds correct because it is in fact th subject of "don't care" and "Cassidy says" is just sort of an extra. I know that journalists like to get their English right since their profession is using English.

Oops. Sorry about the typo. I meant "verb", not "very."

Yes, we need the 200-400 temporary jobs and the 30-50 full time jobs the Keystone pipeline will create. Nevermind that this whole pipeline is for a company that is foreign (Canadian) and that none of the crude traveling through the pipeline will be used in the US. All resulting product will be shipped to other countries and the profits will go to Canada. The US will get the opportunity to kowtow to the GOP for getting it passed and the privilege of seeing the natural, beautiful land underneath the pipeline go to waste because it is a well known fact that every pipeline ever built experiences leaks and spill in the tens of millions of gallons. We also get to see what is perhaps the largest aquifer in the US under Nebraska become contaminated. Who wants to live in Nebraska anyway...right. Oh the benefits of the Keystone are many....for those who do not live in the US or politicians who accept donations.

It is absolutely amazing to me to see how much support these obstructionist Democrats in the Senate have, and how many people believe it when they blame all of the problems on the Republicans.

Pieces of legislation after pieces of legislation for the last 6 years have been sent to the Senate from the House only to be declared "dead on arrival" by Harry Reid and his minions. Any reasonable person with any common sense should be able to understand without a doubt just "who" it is that has log lammed the process of managing a government, but why can't they? Harry Reid and his Senate Democrats have adopted the "my way, or the highway" form of government. This is not how business gets done, anywhere.

I truly believe that a 3rd party needs to step up; one that can attract Republicans, Democrats and Independents who really care about this nation and keeping it solvent and peaceful and set a platform for 206 that will essentially end this "2 party" stagnation and move this country in a direction toward putting every American back to work who can work, and closing this damned border and returning "legal" to the phrase "legal alien".

People who have come here illegally have no rights under the Constitution, but "liberals" have given them imaginary rights so they can hold onto their "power".
