Louisiana congressman: Remove Reid as majority leader to pass Keystone in Senate

(CNN) - Rep. Bill Cassidy has one solution for moving legislation on the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Senate: Remove its top obstructionist.

“We must stop Harry Reid and the senators who support him from blocking the Keystone XL pipeline – blocking the jobs, the opportunity that it creates,” Cassidy said in a weekly GOP address. “It’s time to retire Harry Reid as the leader of the Senate.”

The House voted 238-173 on Tuesday in favor of a bill that would push the pipeline forward by eliminating a requirement in which oil and gas pipelines that cross U.S. borders get a permit from the White House. The bill passed with 17 Democrats voting in favor of the measure, despite a veto threat from the White House.

A similar bill in the Senate was blocked the same day by Senate Democrats, whom Cassidy says don’t care about the economic well-being of American families.

“President Obama and his allies like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more interested in rolling out the red tape than the red carpet for these jobs,” Cassidy said.

“Sadly, Democrats in Washington stand with President Obama rather than standing with hard-working families in Louisiana and elsewhere. They would rather your family struggle than offend their political base.”

Reid has said that he would consider bringing a vote on the matter to the Senate floor so long as Republicans would allow a vote on a bipartisan energy efficiency bill.

In his address, Cassidy cites the State Department in saying that the pipeline would cause negligible harm to the environment and even saves lives, as there are fewer accidents shipping oil by pipeline as opposed to rail or truck.

He also argues that jobs created by the construction of the pipeline would provide Americans with the opportunity to pursue their dreams

“You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.”

I think John Bohner needs to be removed as Speaker so that Congress can start doing the work of the American people again. Like passing Jobs Bill, Funding the VA, Extending Unemployment, Protecting our environment, and Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes.

Building this pipeline will give jobs to foreign workers, There is no doubt that it will Jeopardize ecology where ever it is laid at some point in the future; The American people won't get anything out of it, but a higher tax debt to pay for the damage this pipeline will bring. The only people that will benefit are the foreign pipeline workers and a few greedy individuals that would line their own pockets with cash at our expense.....traitors!

Smoke screen and mirrors. There wont be that many jobs. There have been other jobs bills, clean jobs not fossil fuel jobs but the GOP vetoed or filibustered them. This is for big oils benefit and no one elses.

A pipeline moving a foreign product to a foreign market, is guaranteed to do immense amounts of financial and environmental damage along it's path at any number of points, that only creates around 65 permanent jobs. Yeah, we really need that.

A pipeline that moves a foreign product to another set of foreign markets, is guaranteed to do immense amounts of financial and environmental damage at points along its route, has already involved abusing eminent domain laws to cease property from already productive businesses for strictly private (TransCanada) interests, and only creates around 65 permanent jobs. Yeah, we need that. Try again, Mr. Cassidy.

Reid is squarely in Obama's pocked (the back one). If that pipeline ever gets build, it will once again make the US a world power...............completely eliminating our dependence on Mid-Eastern oil. If that happens, Obama and his muslim brothers will see the Arab countries collapse. It was the US need for oil, during our heyday, that made the Arab countries. The pipeline could reverse the situation and then they will be back where they were in the 1800's.

NO KXL EVER. I do not like Reid, but he is right to stop the pipeline. It is an export pipeline so the U. S would get none of it. The jobs would be very temporary and few. That is not going to help anyone realize their dreams. They would most probably bring the high skilled workers with them. They want to put their pipeline in the Ogalalla Aquifer which is one the largest water supplies in America. The Aquifer supplies drinking and farming water for 7 states. When (yes when not if) it leaks the thick, toxic sludge, will go into the water supply and ruin the water for any use. They do not even know how to clean it out of water. There is no amount of money that could pay for that risk. America is only a path to the gulf to be refined and shipped to a foreign country to make billions for TransCanada. All risk and no benefit for America. NO KXL

Unfortunately, the congressman forgot to mention a couple of things. One,Canada has publicly stated that at least 80% of any oil going through the pipeline has already been sold to China.Whether the remaining 20% stays in this country is anyones guess.Canada is already building a pipeline east to west within it's own borders. As to the proposed pipeline, the U.S. takes all the risk with Canada saying they are not responsible for any leaks outside it's borders. All the U.S. gets is a chance to buy 20% of the oil, shortterm employment and all the headaches that go with a project this size. This pipeline should not be built under those conditions.

XL Keystone is being highly overrated in the number of permanent jobs it will produce by the petroleum industry. Oil happens to be a global commodity. There will be little direct benefit to the U.S. from this pipeline.

The keystone pipeline would provide jobs, create new businesses to create the pipeline materials, equipment, safety items, tools, tree removal, land grading and hundreds of more jobs, AND reduce, OR, nearly eliminate our purchase of foreign oil..... thus not supporting terrorist countries. There would be no more need to be giving billions of tax dollars to corrupt countries to "" BUY "" their oil. Gasoline costs drop way down, more people travel, use motels and hotels, restaurants, visit vacation spots and sightseeing...... the "Hell" with iraq's oil, saudi's oil, iran and venezualias oil..... we now have our own. Let them countries "choke on their oil". ........... BUT ....... the corrupt US government will not let that happen, due to it will create prosperity and wealth in America, drop unemployment to all time lows, maybe evn eliminate it entirely !!!! The corrupt politicians DO NOT want this to happen, how can they become rich, important people without controlling you ???? National debt will decrease, and many countries will become poor and pennyless !!!!! America will become a thriving country again – – – BUT – – – unless you get rid of the present corrupt politicians in washington COMPLETELY ..... it is just a dream, never to happen. 100% change of congress and senate, and NO DEMOCRAP OR REPUKEICAN WILL BE VOTED FOR – JUST INDEPENDENTS WHO BELIEVE IN AMERICA and its people !!!!!

Hairy Reid should be forcibly removed from the Senate to face felony indictment and charges persuant to his role in numerous crimes against the sovereignty of the United States.
He should also be investigated under the Rico Act.

Or maybe we could not pass the pipeline? The oil would be EXPORTED. Aside from making temporary construction jobs, then a minimum of a few hundred maintenance jobs. Why is this a good idea again?

Keystone is a bad idea, period. It's going to wreck the environment. I guess though, no one needs clean water at all. Okay then, send any and all medical bills, that may result in damage to you or your family, to Mr. Cassidy. He can pay for it. Also, send the environmental damage bills to his office as well.

Blocking jobs and when did Republicans when did Republicans care about Jobs.
King George Bush lost 4.7 Million Jobs.
In the past 30 years.. job creation is
Democrats = 30 Million Jobs Created
Republicans = 16 Million Jobs Created
Funny how when the Hypocritical Grand Old People party talks about jobs creation that show know that they don't do that good either.
But what they do well is lie about weapons of mass destruction so that they can start wars so that the Rich can make money off the blood of Americans and others. All the same time King George Bush was giving 7 trillion dollars in tax breaks to the chosen 1%. Two Wars going on no worries lets give tax breaks to the Rich.
See the Pattern, if Government isn't for the Rich then Lets get ride of Harry Reid cause he fights for the little guy.
They got it wrong We the People will fight thru the Voter Suppression, the redistricting , the 5-4 Supreme Court Rulings, and the Old Racist White people will Die off and with them so will their Dumb, Dumer, Dumest party of Racist Fools.
