Louisiana congressman: Remove Reid as majority leader to pass Keystone in Senate

(CNN) - Rep. Bill Cassidy has one solution for moving legislation on the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Senate: Remove its top obstructionist.

“We must stop Harry Reid and the senators who support him from blocking the Keystone XL pipeline – blocking the jobs, the opportunity that it creates,” Cassidy said in a weekly GOP address. “It’s time to retire Harry Reid as the leader of the Senate.”

The House voted 238-173 on Tuesday in favor of a bill that would push the pipeline forward by eliminating a requirement in which oil and gas pipelines that cross U.S. borders get a permit from the White House. The bill passed with 17 Democrats voting in favor of the measure, despite a veto threat from the White House.

A similar bill in the Senate was blocked the same day by Senate Democrats, whom Cassidy says don’t care about the economic well-being of American families.

“President Obama and his allies like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more interested in rolling out the red tape than the red carpet for these jobs,” Cassidy said.

“Sadly, Democrats in Washington stand with President Obama rather than standing with hard-working families in Louisiana and elsewhere. They would rather your family struggle than offend their political base.”

Reid has said that he would consider bringing a vote on the matter to the Senate floor so long as Republicans would allow a vote on a bipartisan energy efficiency bill.

In his address, Cassidy cites the State Department in saying that the pipeline would cause negligible harm to the environment and even saves lives, as there are fewer accidents shipping oil by pipeline as opposed to rail or truck.

He also argues that jobs created by the construction of the pipeline would provide Americans with the opportunity to pursue their dreams

“You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.”

If Dirty Harry was gone that would alleviate the blockade we now have. Bills sit in Reid's office, never to see the light of day unless someone lines his pockets.

The Keystone pipeline will not bring prosperity to Americans, it will help Canadian and American oil companies, who are doing very well without the pipeline. What the pipeline would do is desecrate Native American lands, add even more pollution to the air and water, and make climate change even worse. Despite all their wealth, oil and gas companies still don't have the technology to clean up their spills. Republican politicians only care about protecting the interests of the oil and gas companies, who are major financiers of their campaigns, not the health and welfare of citizens.

The PIPELINE is a joke to make rich oil jerks richer!! If the Louisiana congressman or other congressmen care so much about putting people to work. They would start by using our money locally here in the states and begin rebuilding America's crumbling infrastructure, its a joke most all cities in the united states have subpar sewage treatment facilities horrible fresh water pipes. Downtown have been abandoned Most towns don't even bother putting curbing on new streets they pave. The Highway departments hardly ever mow and keep the highways clean anymore our bridges are crumbling our waterways are polluted and yes people will go on and on about how we cant afford to fix these problems! That is until another WAR comes along and then we just print the hell out of it. And now the government is giving away around 11,000 MRAP war machines designed to be able to take ground mind blast to our local police departments. These cost over 700,000 dollars each. Im wondering first off why this money was wasted on these in the first place because most are unused. Do the math thats roughly 7,700,000,000 thats Seven billion, seven hundred million dollars NOW JUST THINK OF ALL THE HARD WORKING FAMILIES THAT COULD HAVE HELPED. Listen folks if we don't get a hold on this BACK and FORTH bickering of republican vs. democrat BS this great country our grandparents died for and fought for is gonna go right down the crapper. There is a WAR going on right here in our great nation The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. And it against US , we americans are loosing our country right out from under us. If you are for republicans you have been failed if you are for democrats you have been failed our politicians no longer care about doing whats right for US or our COUNTRY!! we fight about dumb stuff all the time because its what THEY tell us to fight about to keep us busy so we don't worry so much about what THEY are doing. Do you care if a man marries a man NO, and don't say you do because you have a neighbor who is gay or a friend or a relative and you don't give a damn. Do you really care that much about Abortion nope because I know there are people out there who are against it, but didn't have a problem doing it, when it affected their life. Believe what you want feel however you want about things to EACH HIS OR HER OWN. It is a FREE COUNTRY right? Remember these same politicians used to say WOMEN could not vote, and that black people could not marry white people, and because of skin color people were not equal to each other. Im talking pure ignorance!! We have got to start making our politicians RUN THIS COUNTRY AND NOT EVERYONES LIVES. WE NEED TO REBUILD THIS GREAT NATION TO WHAT IT ONCE WAS. REBUILD OUR QUALITY OF LIFE AS AMERICAN!! GAY STRAIGHT BLACK WHITE HISPANIC ASIAN MALE FEMALE, ITS DOES NOT MATTER!! THIS CAN BE THE GREAT NATION IT ONCE WAS!! We must UNITE and elect the AMERICAN party!! Put AMERICANS back in control of our great nation!

Democrats are going to lose votes if they pass that pipeline. It needs killed and the whole proposal scraped. It is bad for the country and bad for the environment.

With a little luck, voters in several state will do just that...since voters in his own state couldn't seem to get the job done. He should be on the outside looking in by 1-20-15 at lunch time.
Then...we'll see jobs start to roll back into the system again, and the unemployment rate drop down to where it was before The clown and the obstructionist took over Congress in January of '07.

  7. ThinkAgain - Don't like Congress? Get rid of the repub/tea bag majority.

Building the pipeline would take about 42,100 jobs, but these won't last more than the year or two it would take to complete the project.

After that, only 50 workers would be needed to operate the pipeline (these figure are from the U.S. State Department).

It's also dirty fuel: burning a gallon of fuel from the Canadian oil results in 14% – 20% more greenhouse gas emissions on average than burning a gallon of currently available fuel (Congressional Research Study).

The Keystone pipeline would have little effect on gas prices at the pump in the U.S. (State Department analysis).

This project would mostly benefit the oil and construction companies involved – NOT the American consumer.

The jobs that the pipeline will create will only last for until the pipeline is built. The only people who are going to benefit from it are the oil companies and the republicans that are owned by the corporations and the 1%. If the pipeline poisons water supplies, what then? The oil companies are just going to stall like they always do and the people who live in those areas are the ones that are going to suffer. Also the pipeline is just going to be another target for the terrorist.

Congressman Bill Cassidy discusses the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as being natural ,
As oil continues to spill into the Gulf of Mexico following ... Bill Cassidy, Republican of Louisiana, received $61,100 from oil lobbyist as a way to help win hearts and minds.

Democrats look for ways to use the Gulf oil spill as a reason to make energy more expensive . ... Bill Cassidy (R-La.)

    Dear sir,
Senator Cassidy it is not your prerogative to decide who is majority leader of the Senate or even to ask ( in rhetoric alone) for him to resign.
That equates to me the same thing you callout president Obama for on executive privilege misuse.
For the latter executive power misuse can we get real the checks and balance procedure and that is pass an Impeachment resolution if valid.
But , no we know that does not work so meantime we put out all or any kind of non sensical opposition none of which helps govern our nation for the benefit of all.

Let us not forget the thousands of tons worth of pollutants that this crackhead is encouraging we add to the air we breathe so that we can create what? A few hundred jobs? I live in south east Texas and I can tell you that the cancer rate here is one of the highest in the country thanks to oil. Tar sand oil will only make the problem with climate change that much worse. How about you stop holding hands with oil companies and start ACTUALLY being concerned about the lives of Americans.

If you really want to build something that helps Americans, there are a few thousand bridges that urgently need attention. There are sewers and waste treatment facilities that have been neglected for years. Tens of thousands of otherwise unused acres could be populated with wind and solar energy farms. Of course none of these will pay the Koch's in the billions of dollars like KXL. Maybe that is why their representatives in congress aren't pushing for them.

Reid has got to go, not only for holding up the pipeline. For holding up the country I'm sick of this guy getting bills and budgets and they stop at his desk and the republicans get blamed. If you get rid of Reid we would get this country moving again.

Reid and Obama love portraying Republicans as the obstructionists to everything good for America, when in fact, it is these two nimrods who are stalling America's economic growth. Unfortunately, too many of America's "useful idiot voters" get their propaganda from the Obama cheerleading squad known as the "Main Stream Media". Blacks, Latinos/Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and all need to wake up to the fact that Obama, Reid , and all their progressive minions on BOTH sides of the aisle only give a damn about you as votes! Even the unions want the Keystone Pipeline for the jobs it will create! WAKE the hell up America, before it is too late!!

The only problem I see is after this thing is built there is no more jobs. No our oil prices won't go down cause the oil is not staying in the U.S.A. So you think by going short term job is better then none at any cost. The cost of our water for a dream that when the job is done then you can worry about how your going to pay for the house and anything else you got from working on it. You people in Washington just DON"T GET IT. Why don't they ship it a cross there own land and set up what is needed to ship it off their own cost. Why cause they don't have to worry about there water and land being destroyed by it when it leaks.

    Well, let's see.
AS to jobs, the general estimate is tt it will create somewhere between 4000 and 6000 temporary jobs, during the actual construction. Most of these jobs will be filled by Canadian workers, as Keystone s a Canadian firm (49% owned by Chinese interests).

As to permanent jobs, the general estimate id between 5 and 35, depending on how the jobs are structured.

None of the product shipped through the pipeline will enter US markets, as it will be 100% transshipped to China, for their expanding economy.

The processing of the bitumen to usable petroleum will take lace in the Houston-Galveston-Pasadena area. Bitumen and tar sands are the dirtiest sources of petroleum. This means the air pollution from the processing will be over the Houston-Galveston-Pasadena area, and will drift northeast into Louisiana, creating major health problems for the inhabitants of that state.

As to deaths and accidents, he is counting both US and Canadian data. But the US trucking and rail systems are more tightly regulated than similar ones in Canada, so his statement is misleading.

This is a bad plan. It could destroy our water and you guys in Washington JUST DON"T GET IT.When the dam thing is finished then what?? You have people who are in the hole cause no more job so the houses and things they bought they can no longer afford. Why don't they take it across their own country? Why cause if the dam thing leaks it will hurt the water and land in their country. WHy don't they ship it across to their own cost line and build what they need to do what has to be done with. WHy risk our water and land for something we don't get anything from it oh yea the job but when our water and land is destroyed by the leaks then what oh guess we shouldn't have built it. Day late and dollar short.A few jobs is NOT WORTH THE COST OF WATER AND LAND Reid is doing what he is in the office to do look out for the people not be greedy like those who want it

Rep. Bill Cassidy is now running for the US Senate. “You have your own dreams. There are common sense solutions to provide you opportunity,” Cassidy said. “One is the Keystone XL Pipeline.” His "common sense" solution is over $200,000 in campaign contributions from gas and oil in the 2013-14 election cycle. The Keystone jobs myth has been well debunked. The Pipeline will have little effect on consumer energy prices but will make big profits for Gas and Oil corporate interests. This is another example of the best government (corporate) money can buy.
