Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

Obama's lawless disregard for our immigration laws is coming home to roost, and now WE have to PAY THE BILL for his lawless, reckless stupidity. His actions and granting partial amnesty to segments of illegals in this country and talk of granting amnesty and citizenship HAS CAUSED THIS NIGHTMARE. But our borders were supposed to be secure according to the Democrats and Obama! Yet another Obama/Democrat LIE exposed.

Stop all trade with Mexico IMMEDIATELY. Shut down ALL wire transfers of money to Mexico. STOP all travel to Mexico. The Mexican government that has turned this into a major money making industry for their country will stop it in a heart beat when the cost is made higher than what they get from aiding these people to invade our country.

Obama has proven once again, he has no idea what he is doing. His stupidity has negative consequences to this country, and now to our wallets. Democrat gotta GO come this November. It is the only way this insanity will end.

    Dear Mr President ,

Please start with demanding the immediate return of the Not so Smart US Marine who is being held in Mexico .

The man has PTSD , please put presser on our Mexican Neighbors. After all they make mistakes also , like flying attack helicopters up to and on occasions across our borders escorting drug runners .

I suggest you call up the President of Mexico after todays soccer game .

How about we all take our trucks down to border, load em up and drive back across the border where they came from. Then the 2M could be better spent on our own citizens.

2 billion that could be used to house and feed our own homeless people. Disgraceful.

If the $2 billion is used to secure our borders then yes! If it is to encourage illegals then a resounding NO!!!

I'm not half as concerned about the kids coming over the border as I am about all the Muslims that are in the United States.

I would rather deport every Muslim than I would those refugee kids.

This is his making. 1000 percent!!! Remember he sued the state of Arizona because he said immigration enforcement was the feds job, not the states. Now we all are paying for it. Is he trying to take our nation down? Because it seems like it.

If this administration didn't talk about just giving away citizenship, social security, health insurance, scholarships, food, etc. to any and all illegals inside the US already, we wouldn't have this influx of illegal immigrants in the first place. What happened to going through the proper channels? Our government is completely ignoring federal laws that they themselves created and don't enforce.

Create the conditions for the crisis and then ask for money...What we are seeing is a total failure of the Obama administration do just manage the everyday task of running the government. Everything is always a crisis and the White House is always finding out from the news media what's going on.

take this money as well as all the other billions that we invest in China, and invest it into Mexico while legalizing marijuana, and taking money and power from the cartels and putting into the Mexican economy, government and industry, watch the products that we buy become better and just as affordable by having Made in Mexico rather than Made in China, and with the improved opportunity and economy in Mexico, watch our border problem slowly disappear as we then have a truly powerful and vibrant and powerful North America. Canada, America and Mexico, united and mutually invested could effectively be a powerful force, if only....

Good idea. We can bus them into Washington DC, and set up a tent city for processing them into our society. I'm sure Obama and Pelosi would welcome them as neighbors. Wouldn't they?

So we have $2 billion to throw at this but we can't get our vets into a private doctor as an "emergency" measure to alleviate the wait they have endured? Something is seriously wrong with this country.

I don't understand why these people choose to cross the border and pay a coyote thousands of dollars. If they simply got a tourist visa and overstayed, nobody will ever look for them or even try. There are thousands of schools from California to Texas that are full of illegal children and billons are spent on giving them free educations and free lunch vouchers. Nobody blinks about that and Republicans and Democrats are guilty of doing this.

Suddenly, protecting our border is something important to this president. And guess what taxpayers?! It will cost $2 billion! Awesome, right? It's too bad the President didn't think to worry about this sooner... you know, before it got to this point.
