Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

Okay, this has good intentions, but instead of taxing Americans for this money, why not charge a fee to all car and commercial vehicles entering the USA a fee to cover this cost since both Mexico, and those Central American country's do not care about these people, and could care less in curbing illegal immigration into the USA. Here are the fees: 1.00 for every car entering into this country from Mexico. Three days work for those captured before returning home, a $5.00 fee for all commercial vehicles entering into the USA from Mexico. Yes, this includes all US citizens coming back from Mexico into the USA again.

Use all funds to immediately deport the illegal criminals. Give them a bottle of water, a sandwich, and bus them back. Problem solved.

People are so focused on the border that they forget that's where entering illegals are most likely to be caught.

Most successful illegal immigration is the result of overstaying travel visas. They buy a roundtrip ticket here, and just never fly back.

Why does it take 2 billion to say no? This problem has been going on for years while states such as Arizona and New Mexico pleaded for federal help. We welcome those that enter our country legally, and we should punish those that do it illegally. What is the sense of having laws that forbid it. Is the 2 billion for hush money or pay offs for the those that want to keep hashing it out in Washington.

If he would have requested a few $100 million a border fence. He wouldn't need $2B now. What a moron.

He helped cause the issue and wants money to continue it? For all you that say "if we had comprehensive immigration reform this would not have happened" I call BS, we have laws on the books about defending the border and deporting illegals, BO has spat on those laws, invited everyone in and now wants us to pay for it. Wake up America

As long as the government uses the military to administer the program you'll get no argument from me. If they are persuaded to privitize the thing the blood suckers will be filling congress with all kinds of programs and monies to get their hands on taxpayer monies just like "Atta Boy, Brownie" "W"'s horse farmer handled the Katrina disaster. Sure as hell I can just see it now. Ole Cruz will get his druthers in it and there it goes.

You caused this border crisis. Maybe you should start enforcing our Immigration laws and secure our border instead of asking for money to help with the crisis YOU started...

Seems this elaborate escapade is just to be the smoking gun for the failure of Obama Care and why it will need more money to succeed, even though Obama Promised it will not result in a raise in taxes. We'll here's a 2 billion dollar tax increase!!. So Mr. Obama, to keep your promise you need to retract this request immediately!!! Whats he's asking is for everyone of us wage earners to pony up money for all these new welfare and health care recipients. If anything take the money and build them a disney land in their own country and keep them there so they don't spread diseases.

We have a resource for border protection! We have National Guard, Reserve and Active duty soldiers. The war is winding down and these Soldiers, sailors and airmen need constant training. They can train and protect our borders at the same time. If we keep people from crossing the borders we don't need detention facilities or other services for illegals.

First of all illegal aliens are not immigrants or undocumented they are illegal aliens and in violation of our laws. The second time here is a felony and about 3/4 are here a second time. Offering a path to citizenship is in fact amnesty and/or a pardon for criminals. Don't lie to us! Give in this time don't be surprised when number three comes.

They're illegal, not undocumented! While tens of thousands wait in line following the process out inept president refuses to secure the border and instead looks at these people as voters for his party. Pathetic!

The current administration is seen as weak on illegal immigration, and now some real problems have come home to roost. The billions he is seeking could have built a fence/wall. While both Obama and Hillary have shot down or criticized proposals for increased security or fences on the border for political reasons, larger problems have resulted.

Oh, NOW, he wants to do something about the border. Apparently, BO had never heard that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. More wasted money. Again!
