Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

NOT ONE DIME – Unless the money is used to:
    1) Stop the flood
    2) Get this illegal immigrants shipped back out of the US
    3) Feed them, clothe them until they are returned.

The law was changed in 2008 and if these children are coached they can claim special status and the Obama administration will not deport them. If you think this is silly read Pelosi's comments – you can tell what she wants to do with every one of them:
"This crisis that some call a crisis, we have to view as an opportunity," Pelosi said. "If you believe as we do that every child, every person has a spark of divinity in them, and is therefore worthy of respect - what we saw in those rooms was [a] dazzling, sparkling, array of God's children, worthy of respect."

Lower the amount of foreign aid by the same amount, to the countries that are allowing this to happen. Same effect, stronger message.

That's a lot of money for a fence. Perhaps if the Federal Government had secured the border like they were supposed to do over the last decade the president wouldn't need to strong-arm Congress for $2 billion to take care of people who shouldn't be here to begin with?

Let the Democratic Party pay for it. They have millions to burn. Better yet, bill Jerry Brown of California. He has a surplus right now.

YEH we have a problem with our immigrant issues.....they are not enforeced – the laws we have are not enforced....we don't sent them ( all – those that over stay their visa, cross the boarder, come on no visa, here for school or a vist...) send them all back,

We do not enfore the people who hire them to baby sit, do construction etc and fine and imprison those person....cause those that do try and follow the law ...us American who refuse to do business with illegals....get the stick....we pay more, get ostracized.....and more for doing it correct....and all those in line legally from the start are the ones the laws should be changed for....

2 amnesties and dream acts and illegal housing and supporting those that are illegal......this is the change.....

only money to send them home and build a brick high wired wall with dogs and guns to prevent them from coming here and more on the police force to send them all home – overstays , here after school, illegal walking the boarder, liers and more

The problem is obvious ... People will believe that in the future there will be another "deferred" law ... For kids arriving after 2012 ... These are desperate people and frankly why shouldn't they hope ... Obama set a precedence w the current law ... It's logical ... The Reagan amnesty was supposed to be a one time deal ...

So... can someone explain this to me? Obama pushed hard for a pathway to citizenship for "Dreamers" – those who were brought into the country as young kids. Subsequently a bunch of young kids rushed to enter the country to take advantage of that. Now Obama wants to spend literally billions to turn them back?

2 billion is a complete and total waste of money. why?
1-under Obama, "just illegals" are put into deportation proceedings but then the case is administratively closed (put on hold) until the person commits another crime, so, they are not ordered deported the first time through
2-the illegals know about that so turn themselves into immigration knowing they wont be returned
3-the parents who arrange for their kids to be smuggled and who themselves are here illegally, can take custody of their children from ICE without the parent's immigration status being checked
3-they can claim asylum and will never be returned
4-the welfare state here, even for an illegal, is better than the trash countries they live in so it's a no brainer coming here-never, ever to leave
5-my credentials? 24 years of working for INS and ICE

Didn't Obama know about this long before it happened? He'll probably deny knowing anything about it and say he heard about it on CNN.

This crisis is out of control. Unless we send a message to these countries that we won't accept people who enter the country illegally the problem will continue to expand. Everyone who comes across the border should get a one-way ticket back home. Putting people up in Massachusetts, or using the 'honor system' to get people to show up at deportation hearings is a fools errand.

take all that money and help our own American people...those that are misdemenors and felons...they are americans and can't vote can't go to school can't get funding from government and more BUT you want to help these illegals that are FELONS and their arrogant kids that are illegals – felons.....

Why not. More money for illegals. The American people have plenty so let just give all we have to other countries and make sure their kids are healthy and taken care of like having clothes and shelter and food . While American kids families are losing their home in foreclosure they will not mind to make sure others are being taken care of first. Why worry with what is going on with the American families. Make sure the banks and big business are ok and don't need more money and be sure charity starts for other. This is sicking
