Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

This is incredibly sad... That money could help so many struggling citizens in this country. There are a lot of us struggling, badly, and receive close to no help. Yet someone who came here 9 months ago can pop out a kid and have anything handed to them. Or better yet show up here illegally and have CNN give them a documentary 😉

That $2 billion needs to be used to 1) finish building the fence and 2) placing our national guard and marines along the border to turn all these illegals back to mexico. Ofcourse this will never happen because the democrats depend on illegals for their votes to stay in power.

And if we don't cooperate, Obama has instructed the IRS to withdraw funds from peoples bank accounts untill the need has been fulfilled.

Send the president, his administration and Congress to border patrol duty.

They are already getting paid, so no need for the $2 Billion.

At least we could get something productive out ofthem

There would be no border crisis if Obama merely upheld the laws of the constitution he pledged to defend. The crisis Obama is having is a narcissistic crisis, which is, "How do I maintain my hip image which is on a rapid downslide because of my inability to do my job correctly?"

The current crisis is not the first "crisis" , we have had an immigration "problem" for generations, under Repubs and Dems.... the difference this time in particulpar, is the wave consists almost entirely of UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN.

Use the money he's asking for to send those kids home and close the darn border. Good grief, they had a big ol' wall in Germany for decades and nobody crossed that border illegally.

What! How about $2 billion for college students to get through school, help people who lost their homes in our recent financial crisis, or help for homeless people in the US to live, or...___ (fill in the blank and DO NOT include bombs to drop on humans).

Not our job, deport them, and let their own countries handle them.

The $2B is to catch 'em and deport 'em. That costs money, you know. In 2011, ICE estimated the deportation cost to be $12,500, on average, per illegal immigrant. Add to that additional measures to keep them out. Break out your calculators and do the math.

And less than a year ago Obama and Napolitano said the border was as secure as ever and nothing more was needed. Obama's de facto amnesty for the dream kids was the impetus for these families sending their kids to the USA. Once again he does not execute laws and selectively changes them, in this case the immigration laws on the books.
He is violating his oath as President. No Obama, no more money for you.

I agree with Obama in this.
Those who are against this think abut a situation:
Kids were kidnapped and ask them to sell drugs, if they don't drug lords will kill these kids, assume if it happens to USA, would you guys still deport...

It is Obama's faulty. Six months ago the federal government advertised for contractors to escort young illegals. He started this influx with his executive dream act. They should be packed up sent home, the border secured and obama impeached. Period.

SECURE THE BORDER!! Send these people back where they came from, instead of busing them everywhere in this country, send them home. Yes, its sad seeing these children, but they need to go home to their families. We need to take care of our own people.

    Barrack made this problem;
    – Failed to enforce immigration laws
    – Assisted illegal immigrants to get free US government assistance programs
    – Passed parts of his DREAM Act via his executive powers
    – constantly held the tone that Amnesty was on its way.

His solution is better late than never, but it may already be too late. Question is what "stipulations" he is going to add. Knowing Barrack's partiality towards illegal immigrants, it will probably read "if you can breath, you and your family can stay as long as you vote Democrat for life."

Democrats make me always feel selfish on immigration issue while they boast their generosity.
It's difficult to say against the people who try to come to US to live better life.
But I really don't know how much the democrats are willing to pay from their own pockets for them.
If they depend their generosity on others' pockets, they are liars and hypocrites.
But actually they do, so they are liars and hypocrites only with arrogance.
