Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

All he's going to do is take the funds and give them to the illegals!

BRILLIANT! Make statements of amnesty to the world to lure foreigners to send their children to America, then ask for $2 billion to deal with them when they arrive. This president is clueless.

Just couldn't handle it before it became an even lager crisis. Typical government. Let something become a disaster then spend 10 times as much to fix it as it would have to fix it when it should have then try to act like some kind of hero for trying to give it attention now. Mr. Obama, you would have been a real hero if you would have addressed the border issue when you first took office. Now you are just a career politician doing the obvious. Thanks a lot.

My BIG question is why not make E-Verify mandatory nationwide with huge fines/jail/lost of business license for those who hire anyway. Oh my bad the politicians don't really care.

How about $2 billion in funding to increase border patrol and stop 'em before they become our 'humanitarian crisis"?

Let's wait until it's a "Crisis" before we do anything. More "deferred action".

Just a suggestion. When thinking up future city states and the like, I thought of a interesting solution to immigration.

Set up thousands of immigration centers around the world in countries that do the most immigration. Offer education and services to determine who could immigrate to america. Picking people who can provide amazing contribution. The amount of doctors and caregivers in the world that want to join america must be staggering but the process of getting here is difficult

America ( and canada for me) Was built on the hard work of people who came to this continent in huge migrations. Skilled, educated labor would never hurt this country and if we took out processing of immigrants away from the borders and into communities where it is needed, and funded a better program we COULD help people, AND ourselves.

Anyone of any age coming into our country illegally should be placed on a plane or boat returning to that country and a bill should be sent to that government to cover our expenses. Another $2 billion??? Where will it stop. The country is broke and we are endangering the quality of life for our own children and grandchildren. This has to stop.

So...with all the talk about giving illegals amnesty, how is he surprised that there would be an influx of people trying to get into the US for said act?

No, I don't think so. The offer for a fix was out there years ago, a complete fencing of the border but they said no.

I've got to hand it to the president for this.

The main argument from the GOP regarding immigration reform is control the boarders. Of course we know this does nothing about the non documented immigrants already here – so hardly representative of a the limits of effective immigration reforms – but that's another issue. The president in replying to this banter by saying, OK... you want it, this is what it's going to cost. It will be interesting how the GOP will respond. It they go for it, then they've just contradicted their 'no more spending' rant. If they don't go for it, then Obama has called their bluff.

What this will manifest it either increased border patrol, which would be a good thing, or fantastic political capital for democrats who may be running again incumbent republicans who chanted border patrol and then voted against funding it.
