Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

President Obama has made America as the HEAVEN of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Please President, Obama, forget “immediate humanitarian crisis.” Do you want to call 11,000,000 illegal immigrants in America "long time humanitarian crisis."

How about 1 billion for the borders and 1 billion for deporting these kids back and billing their countries for the cost of sending them back.

Why is the answer always flush billions down the toilet? simply push them across the border back into Mexico and let that evil country deal with it.

I do not think they need more money. I live in Texas and they have not done anything with the money they have. Come up with a plan and ask for funding. Done with writing checks that are misused. Something needs to be done. But its not just those borders, its country wide. I did not mind at first, but now its out of control. This goes back well before the current administration. Our border agents are being shoot at more now. Tired of bandaid fixes on a gaping wound. When I went to their countries, I was never offered the opportunities that they are given here in the US. We are having a hard enough time taking care of our own (People that are born here that want to make a better life).

the only money he should be given is the funds to ship them all back where they came from immediately. money should not be wasted on people not legally in the country when we cant even look after our veterans

We need to give them free healthcare, education, homes, living allowance, etc. As a democrat I feel for these people. The middle class can afford more taxes to pay for these poor people...

Load them in cattle cars and ship them back where they came from problem solved. Obama wants to spend the money hiring lawyers and trying to get them on welfare so we can take care of them forever.

The border is 1,954 miles long. There is no way to secure it. The states need to crack down on businesses that are hiring these people. If there are no jobs for them, they wont come here.

So they're finally calling them illegal immigrants. I have no problem with legal immigrants. In fact, I am very thankful for my dad to come to this country, but I do not like people destabilizing the immigration process by coming here illegally and then demanding all of these rights that they have no business demanding. The only thing that is needed for immigration reform is to expedite the process. It's pretty ridiculous that it takes as long as it does. I'm sure there is a way to cut this down. Other than that, we need more penalties on businesses. They wouldn't come here if they weren't under the impression that they could make money under the table.

Why does it cost billions to put illegal aliens on a plane and ship them back home.

Finally, although about 30 years too late. I'm so sick of the influx of illegal aliens. I voted for Obama twice, knew his position on immigration but felt Congress would keep in line on it, and when they do he just quits enforcing the laws. If he'll do this and secure our borders he might accidentally get back in good standing with the people.

When is enough, enough. When are the lapdogs in Washington going to start thinking of the people they are supposed to represent? When are they going to give families with children the same amount they are spending on these border crashers? That amount is $252/day according to the first $2 billion for 60,000 children that have already crossed the border and now he wants $2 billion more. The man must be totally insane. This isnt an opportunity as Pelosi said today in a news conference, but a travisty of our elected officials to enforce the laws of this country and the constitution. It is time to get rid of all of them in November and put people in office that have real world experience and dont live in a rose colored fantasy land.

Funny to read the comments on where was Obama before the influx when he's spent more on border security than any other president ever. I suppose easily checked facts have no place in the land of rant and spin.
