Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

That day is not far when it will be illegal to turn down an 'Undocumented' for a job. They may compromise on a 'quota', as though America owes illegals, more than it does to law-abiding, hard-working, tax-paying Americans OR legal immigrants.
CNN will soon be ready for a documentary like 'Employed' (in line with 'Documented').

The GOP needs to decide. If they want the borders closed, then it will take money to do it. You can't have it both ways. Either approve the additional spending or shut up about illegal immigration.

And while we are at it, why don't we pass a law that children born here from illegal immigrants or those on a temporary passport are not automatic American citizens, but citizens of their mother's home country. The rich Chinese are sending their pregnant wives over here on vacation to get their dual citizenship. The laws need to change! Congress there is a reason your approval rating is so low. We are sick of taking care of everyone at the expense of our own citizens. 2B for this, 6B to give Africa the internet, but our own vets are without healthcare. Priorities!

Let's see ... $2B for an estimated 60,000 children, that's $33,333.33 per child or $640 per child weekly.

This is about $5,000 more than a median American income of $28,450.

Just to keep it in a proper pespective

The kindness of Americans is exhausted. Close our borders...children or not. Send them back!! No more money is to be spent outside of our own country. We have our OWN people to take care of Mr. President and Congress. I realize that you people don't seem to understand that concept any more. NO MORE MONEY, PERIOD!! This President is frivolous and hands money out to other countries as if it was fresh baked cookies with no regards to where it comes from. He knows he is leaving office soon and doesn't give a rat's patoot how much further in debt we are.

Very Simple Solution. Bill the Country/Countries of origin of these children. For example: Ask Mexico for $1 Billion (or more) to take care of the people coming here. If they don't pay, we take Baja California or some other part of Mexico. Just keep on extending our borders. Mexico will figure things out real fast and all the illegal immigration problems will go away.

"Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,”

Yeah except, last I heard something like 12,000 guatemalan children had entered this year... and 106 have been deported. So sure, if you child is 17 years and 355 days old... they might get deported. But everyone else, nope.

Mr. Obama took it upon himself not to enforce existing immigration law. And as a result, the message was received in central america that children could just stay in the good ol' USA. Now we have this mess. Mr. Obama decided he wanted to be Mr. Independent. He needs to be independent NOW.

So if we see 90,000 refugee children arrive, that's over $20,000 per child. Is that a reasonable amount?

Meanwhile, the three countries from which these children are fleeing receive approximately $50 million each in annual foreign aid from the United States. I think we should take the cost of dealing with this crisis out of those budgets. And I think we can handle each refugee for a lot less than $20,000 per capita. Budget $2,000 for immediate humanitarian aid, then $1,000 for air transport back to their country of origin - that would be $3,000/each, or "only" $270 million overall, rather than $2 billion. Then line up the planes and send them back. These children do not belong here - we have our own under-served needy children to care for; remember the foster care system? - and, after all, these children are the responsibility of their home countries.

Incidentally, how much would it cost to lay off, say, 15% of the Veterans Administration and IRS staffs? Oh wait - that would actually save us money, right? Well, let's start trimming with the employees making over $100,000/year...

I am so profoundly disgusted with the federal government.

Congress must re-appropriate $1b from State Department budget and $1b from Homeland Security budget. Both these agencies are incompetent in securing our southern border and enforcing current immigration laws. Both agencies could honker down and do a little less traveling and fewer conferences to address the crisis they helped create with their negligence.
