Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

    Dear King Obama,

Here's the immigration reform I want to see:
    1) Build a wall across our southern border and man it with our National Guard,
    2) Round up illegal aliens and send them back to their country of origin.

That's the law of our land. I would like you to enforce our law like you're sworn to do.

Let's see, he controlled both houses of congress when he took office, but yet he did nothing. So now it's Republican's fault. When will Latino's get sick and tired of being used by the Democratic Party? They don't want to pass anything because they know on most social issues Latino's fall more in line with Republican views so if you took the Immigration issue off the table Democrats would lose allot of the Latino vote and that is the real reason Democrats did not pass a bill when they could of 5 years ago.

This could be solved for a lot less by saturating the border with anti-personnel land mines. The defense department probably has enough spares lying around that we could accomplish it for almost nothing.

But how can this be? Hasn't Obama claimed the southern border is secure several times?
“Under Secretary Napolitano’s leadership, we have strengthened border security beyond what many believed was possible. They wanted more agents on the border. Well, we now have more boots on the ground on the southwest border than at any time in our history. The Border Patrol has 20,000 agents – more than twice as many as there were in 2004, a build up that began under President Bush and that we have continued.”

    –President Obama, May 10, 2011
Then in 2009 when the goals set by Bush were met, DHS ceased hiring and Obama decided it was 'good enough' and did not call for more Border Patrol agents. In point of fact, in 2011 his budget proposal stated that almost 200 agents would be released as one of his money saving plans. Then later on he backtracks (so what's new about that?) and asks for $600M to hire another 1,000.
Now he needs $2B to deal with a problem that, according to his claim that the border is secure, could not possibly exist. How in the world did this clown ever get elected in the first place – and how did so many remain fooled and fall for his false promises and rhetoric a second time?

Spend a fraction of the money on ammo and take military action to actually secure the border. The diplomatic approach obviously isn't working.

The flood of impoverished low wage immigrants into the US is the common ground in Congress.
The right loves them, they depress wages. The left loves them, they vote democratic.
The rich love them, they eat away at the hated middle class.
The debate over immigration reform is just the smoke screen, the con.

Coupled with the free transfer of capital from the US to impoverished low wage countries, the US is on a fast track to becoming an impoverished third world country.

And where is the money going to come from Mr. President, the tooth fairy? The federal government is already more than 17 trillion dollars in debt with huge deficits projected for at least another decade. You are already more than a year late with the budget cuts that are suppose to go along with the tax hike on the rich and the ACA taxes as part of the President's balanced approach to deficit reduction. The President's economic "plan" calls for the federal government to start posting surpluses in 2015 and the President has yet to provide the financial details as to how his economic "plan" is even possible. I estimate that the money the federal government is borrowing today will end up costing the tax payers more than 10 times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 170 years. What we need is less spending not more. We need economic solutions and not more economic problems.

    Secure the Border.

24,000 BP agents assigned to the Southern Border, 1,983 miles of border, 2 agents every mile = 3,966 agents per shift, 4 shifts per day = 15,864 agents needed to secure the border, leaving an extra 8,136 agents to do other duties.

There are plenty of resources within the BP right now to secure the border but instead they are being used to man check points along the highways and byways 50-100 miles from the border in a futile attempt to catch them once they have already entered.

Your "facts" leave much to be desired. There was an across the board freeze put in place on government hiring. What does Pres. Obama;s 2011 budget proposal have to do with anything? It didn't get passed. The only 2011 budget that matters is the one passed by the Tea Party in the House, the one which had hiring freezes.

Why do we pay a salary to more than 400 elected officials in the House, when one, John Boehner, can determine if a issue can be voted on, there? I guess if the U.S. really wanted to save money, they could by eliminating all, but Boehner's position. His obstructive behavior, regarding immigration reform ( and unemployment extension ) should be viewed as criminal, because of the deliberate harm to the government and the people. Are the Republicans attempting to send a message to all who wish to become U.S. citizens, by their scripted denial to extend unemployment? This is not the land of milk and honey and povety is what those who immigrate, have to look forward to, if they grace these shores. I'm glad that President Obama will act on his own, regarding immigration reform. If Congress were negotiating a reform and the President acted on his own, that would be wrong. But that bill has been sitting in the House, deliberately ignored by Boehner, so yes Mr. President, please exercise your authority. My one regret is that because of the separation of power language, he can't do the same for the 3.5 million former long-term employed, tax-payers, who were cut off unemployment, at no fault of their own. Where's the Supreme Court, for Boehner's over-reaching?

Interesting. So how will the republicans respond to this one considering Rick Perry is the one asking for the money. Rick Perry the Republican Governor who ran to be a candidate for the presidency under the republican party. The same man who has asked 10 times for this very action.

scott, jon, beezbo, and fire have the exact correct ideas to deal with the problem. End of story. Obama is a criminal himself for allowing criminals to come into the country and stay in the country sucking all of our resources up and go unpunished for it for years. If you ELIMINATE just the immigration problem completely, this country would rebound quickly economically and financially. A third of all criminals in the prison system are mexican. So count that, the drugs, the guns, the illegal smuggling of birds and reptiles that bring massive diseases into the country, and you eliminate a huge percentage of our country's problems. Close the border off COMPLETELY.

$2B pays for a lot of border patrol and national guard personnel to help stop this from continuing.
