Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

The SAD thing is that the GOP/Tea Party are likely to be just as Insistent
that the President receives NO MONEY to solve this problem
as they are in Blaming him for not Solving It

Here's a thought: put all of our military on the border with Mexico and shoot anyone who tries to cross illegally. A few of those and maybe these "undocumenteds" will get the message that there is no longer a FREE RIDE in the US.

What about the LEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITH ADVANCED SKILLS who have been waiting for 10-15 years to get a Permanent Resident Status.

I am sorry for the troubled nations they are fleeing, but we cannot take them all in. We need to send them back. ALL of them. Children too. We simply cannot afford to support all of these immigrants (generally low skilled if adults) who come here fully planning to abuse the current system of "Catch and release". If I were them, I'd be bombarding the border too–they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. However, the govt needs to be clear. You will be sent back, and sent back very quickly.

Translation: Obama shirks one of the primary responsibilities of his federal government, as defined and mandated in the Constitution he swore to uphold, and now he seeks emergency power to spend money to deal with the aftermath in order to appeal to hispanic voters in an election year.

This guy never ceases to amaze.

The only money he should get is to put the national guard down there and funds to ship them all home no questions asked and no asylum given to any of them. He is creating this mess by letting them think they can stay here. Time to end it.

Obama created this 'crisis' when he ordered the release of all detained illegals and tied the hands of border officials, allowing illegals to flood the borders into America without fear of deportation. Now, Obama will handily blame Republicans for this mess if they refuse the 2+billion he seeks for this manufactured crisis and/or if he doesn't get his way with amnesty for them.

This "crisis" exists because of well recognized insincerity by some politicians' in enforcing the law. Rewarding lawbreakers with citizens' welfare benefits, education, jobs and other comforts does not send a message that immigration law matters. Why wouldn't any sensible adult outside our country who hears the immigration forgiveness message believe all that's needed is a trip across the border?

Forgive nothing, enforce the law, if you didn't enter legally, you should be gone. The President should get the money from other pet programs that benefit the select and ignore the average citizen.

"Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012." of course they meet that 6/15/2012 deadline!!! all they have to do is lie. many are taught to lie! many of these smugglers are protected by US IMMIGRATION LAWYERS and ACTIVISTS GROUPS.
