Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

This isn't a crisis, it's an opportunity, as per Nancy Pelosi.

If Mexico beefed up security at their southern borders with El Salvador, Guatemala, etc., the immigrants/migrants/illegals, etc., wouldn't be making it as far as the Rio Grande or at least not as many of them. Right now, it appears Central America flushed and its all flowing uphill right at us.

Permitting illegals to stay will just encourage more to risk their lives trying to get across our borders so they can stay also.

This is what happens when word gets out about amnesty. Vague details and everyone trying to get here. We are causing this mess and people are literally dying trying to make it here.

Well, we all know where this will go. If it were a Republican president in office, Republicans would overwhelmingly support it. But because it's Obama, the request will be DOA. Hypocrites!!

$2 billion certainly should be enough to finish the fence and patrol the border to prevent illegal entry. Heck, we pay big bucks when we enter the country via plane, why aren't they charging this fee for people who cross by foot?

If iit goes towards building a wall or fence, I am all for it... And the detention center for children is a great idea. Save them from their horrible parents back home who let them cross the border in the first place!

Last week the Administration said Obama wanted 250 million to send the illegals back from where they came. Now he is going to ask for over 2 billion dollars for what? Congress should just say no. We haven't cared for our own Militarys VA people, but now wants 2 billion dollars for this Administrations enabiity to enforce our laws of immigration.

They could probably raise the money, and then some, by having a special tax on those who hire illegal workers. It would be like a user fee. Another thought would be to prosecute those who hire illegal workers, making the fines sufficiently high to cover the billions needed from taxpayers. A typical fine might be $100K, or 10 years in a Federal prison. Same with the news sources that dish out the propaganda about immigration, after all, such propaganda caused the huge influx of immigrants. I'd bet that the could raise enough money that way to pay the costs easily, as well as retire the National debt. Maybe even give tax breaks to the abused middle class, some might even find jobs, after being unemployed for years.

Obama is probably going to use that money for wellfare for these children and for advertising and transportation programs in central america to get more of them here, not to prevent them.

    ENOUGH ALREADY!

Send them all back. I have watched my gorgeous little area of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles turn into a barrio. The attitude of the illegals is scary. We need a President with BALLS. I voted for Obama and I still support him, but not on this issue. I find myself looking for real estate up north because of the illegals...what's wrong with this picture?

What seems to be lacking in this discussion about illegals from Central America is any effort by Mexican authorities to stop them at the Mexican southern border with Guatemala. That is a much shorter boundary making the task easier. And when apprehended they could be immediately put on buses and transported back to their homelands. The U.S. ought to help pay for and encourage the Mexican government to increase their efforts there. This is much cheaper than catching them on our border and processing them and then sending back on a longer and more costly journey back.

Border patrol agents get pay cut, illegal immigrants/ law breakers get housing, foods, diapers etc.... Come on!
Yes, i am an immigrant (from Haiti) and It took me more than 5 years to come to the USA legally.....and spent a lot of money throughout the process. My sisters need to wait 10+ years to come here..... Why is it okay for some people to break the law and still don't get punished? Congress and the American people need to think twice about their priorities.

My party has been hijacked by radical leftists who have no respect for the Constitution except when it is useful for them.

Send them all back. But more importantly, make hiring illegals a felony and loss of business license as well as hefty fine. END THE JOBS AND THEY WILL DEPORT THEMSELVES.

Also, DENY all govt assistance to ALL illegals. If the kids are illegal, send them home. Only exceptions is temporary until they can be deported.

$2B dedicated just for detention centers and humanitarian aid??? How about using some of that $2B to plug up the damn border so we don't HAVE a crisis anymore!! Am I the only one who feels this way?? It seems like we've got an open door policy for anyone who can make it to the border now. What about all of those immigrants who have followed all of the rules to come to America? What does this say to them??

Interesting. The richest man in the world resides in Mexico. His neighbors, his fellow citizens, are so poor and desperate that they are willing to send their children alone across deserts and borders with hope for a better life.
