Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) – President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

Pull and keep our troops out of the middle east. Make 25 man garrisons spaced at half mile increments along the border. Troops have something to do and our border will be much more secure.

The only ones who lose out are Republicans looking for cheap labor and Democrats looking for cheap votes.

I have a novel idea, how about giving the Administration $2B only if it's used to charter 747 cargo jets to send them all home. What a joke this administration is

Obama refused to secure the border, and now wants more money to help with the issue. The federal government kept suing states while refusing to do their job. I hope he gets zero money, and has to deal with this on his own, if he wants to spend money on his failures, Obama can ask Reid, and Pelosi for contributions since they are working with him to keep the border not secrure.

Is he freaking kidding!? $2 billion dollars for WHAT!? Some food and water?

And, if they need help "processing" them in the meantime, call in those resources from around the nation!

And don't pay any ransom to these offending Third World countries either! The best deterrent to this ILLEGAL and humanitarian crisis is to get rid of the President who does not represent what is best for HIS country!

It's only a little known law to Americans. Every foreigner knows the laws exactly and how to beat them.
Sending or giving money to other countries is a waste of tax money because those countries will make SURE they keep sending kids in to get MORE money. Give them nothing and use the 200 million Obama our spending fool on housing them in detention, and sending them back. With the economic problems we face in America this is NO time to be giving other countries our money.

The US-Mexico border is approximately 1,954 miles long. Securing the entire border should be possible with a guard in a small tower every half mile (4000 towers). Then place a main station with response vehicles every 10 miles (200 stations) and it should be fairly easy to coordinate the guarding of the entire border. Another large chunk of expense would be guarding against tunnel digging, but maybe there's an easy way to detect tunnels with some kind of high-tech radar system that gets flown along the border daily. Why don't they just take our national security seriously and do it? There's also the possibility that high-res cameras and a remote monitoring station with a sophisticated auto-detect computer system would do the same job effectively. They should get up off their lazy bum and get something REAL done about it.

I'm not wanting to pay Jack. I have fought my own government for 3 years to get benefits I paid into since I was 14 and have now have to pay an attorney to make them see what they don't want. And you want me to agree to that kind of money for someone who got here illegally and wants free stuff handed to them? I don't think so. Let them figure out how to get back home, they managed to get here just fine.

$2 Billion, good grief. This is why you need to secure the border first before you have conversation #1 on immigration reform, you dumber-than-a-bag-of-hammers liberals. And Nancy Pelosi calls this an "Opportunity". What an opportunity to go broke.

I'm behind the funds if and only if they are only used for transport to send these people back. Along with the parents that come to claim them.

Sure, 15 million people ago it was no crisis but now it is? Reconstruct the Berlin Wall at the border and make E-Verify federal law with fines and impisonment for businesse owners that don't comply. If either of your parents was here illegally then you are not free to stay as an anchor. Then you won't have an emergency except for the mass exodus going south.

Remember The Gadsden Purchase of the 1850s where the US was only $50 million short ($1.4 Billion today) of purchasing the Baja peninsula? Maybe they should just scratch out a check to some Mexican official' completing the deal then annex Baja. Arizona would have a seaport... Since we're raising all their kids anyway.

I'm not a GOP supporter, but back in the day Pat Buchanan of all people suggested building a fence along the border from end to end. Sure you could always do tunnels, etc., but now at least that idea doesn't sound so crazy.

Obama caused this problem and now he wants funds to fix it. The funds are going to 3 hots and a cot. These illegal children will then be put on social services programs at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer. He should have asked for $2 billion to secure the border. This president is a traitor.
