Obama to Republicans: 'So sue me'

(CNN) - President Barack Obama dared Republicans to follow through on their threats to bring a lawsuit against his administration over his use of executive action.

"Middle-class families can’t wait for Republicans in Congress to do stuff. So sue me," Obama said Tuesday at an event in Washington.

"As long as they’re doing nothing, I’m not going to apologize for trying to do something."

Obama’s defiant attitude comes as House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, plans to propose legislation that could bring a lawsuit against him for implementing executive actions that the GOP contends amounts to a breach of his constitutional power by side-stepping the legislative process.

Obama: Boehner's lawsuit is 'a stunt'

Recently, Obama has ramped up his use of executive authority as a way to bypass a deeply divided Congress, avoiding inaction on issues the White House has made hallmarks of the President's second term agenda.

On Monday, Obama said he would start "a new effort to fix as much of our immigration system as I can on my own, without Congress."

Poll: Can Obama get the job done?

At Tuesday's event, Obama continued to harp on congressional Republicans to pass legislation - this time pushing them to invest in transportation.

Standing in front of Key Bridge, which connects the city's Georgetown-area to Virginia, Obama continued his stepped-up rhetoric hammering Republican for obstructing action in Washington.

A fundraising first for Obama

Obama proposed a long-term highway construction bill earlier this year that he says would spur job growth.

"It’s not crazy, it’s not socialism," Obama said of his transportation proposal. "It’s not the imperial presidency - no laws are broken. We’re just building roads and bridges like we’ve been doing for the last, I don’t know, 50, 100 years. But so far, House Republicans have refused to act on this idea."

CNN's Mike Ahlers and Rene Marsh contributed to this report.

Oh, please GOPers please impeach the president and waist more time and taxpayer money. You people are so funny and so brave not to mention brainless. What precident do you have to sue. You don't sue the president. You impeach him. Then on what grounds? High crimes and misdemeanors? (definition: a crime less than a felony or misdeed). John Bohnner should be removed for having no balls to stand up to the tea bagers. A do-nothing, no -nothing repub house that is helping to bring down this country. Where are the jobs Mr Speaker....

These foolish R trolls on this site have really NO IDEA what they are asking for...they keep chanting "IMPEACH HIM!!!" and really think that's what they want. I have news for you yokels: President Obama telling Boehner "So sue me" is the EXACT same kind of moment we all saw when Obama told Romney during debate #2 to "Proceed, Governor" - after which Romney proceeded to show how poorly he was prepared while trying to create a "Gotcha" moment with Benghazi. And that was the beginning of the end for Romney.

If Repubs actually attempt to impeach Obama, the only thing they will succeed in doing is riling up the Dem base and ensuring a repeat of 1998, when the Repubs got clobbered. So go ahead, fools, yell as loudly as you can - I will even JOIN you, it will ensure a November result that WE will love, and you all will KICK yourselves for. I just can't wait until our congress is completely purged of this unproductive, immoral Republican-led Congress.

Don't underestimate Obama's LONG game. These ridiculous stunts are frivolous distractions, meant to occupy the minds of the feeble-minded. Meanwhile, Obama's got his eye on the big picture and he WILL use that pen and phone. FINALLY - GO OBAMA!!!!!

Poor Poor GOP, they just love wasting taxpayers money. Boehner is putting this out there so that the Tea drinkers will keep him as speaker of the house. I sure hope his lover comes out and tell all on him and then see how many crickets you will here. Nothing but dog whistles to make the nuts nuttier. Bush and Cheney should be in jail. but no comment on those two liars. The House does nothing for the country and they are applauded for it. I guess if it ain't white it is not right?

I love President Obama! The Republicans are nothing but a "useless mess"! They stand for nothing, never have an original idea in their empty heads, and they do "nothing" and still want our tax dollars to pay for it. I applaud the president for taking charge as we intended when we voted for him!

I am alarmed at the number of people who still approve this president. I am also alarmed at the people who resort to simple insults to get their point across. Can we stick to the issue? This man is going to side step congress, to help people from OTHER countries. This isn't about us, it's about his continuing refusal to uphold FEDERAL law! If more people would stop playing party politics, and see the motives of ALL of those involved, maybe things in this country could start changing for the better. I'm so sick of hearing that this is the "far left" or "far right." Wake up people, they don't care about anything but maintaining the power they have. I have zero respect for any politician at this point.

Now for the issue at hand, illegal immigration. Instead of returning these people to their countries immediately, he is allowing them to be bussed deeper into our country. Some of them are being released pending a deportation hearing. How many do you think will show up? How about our leaders standing up for it's citizens rather than taking on the problems of the world? This executive order about immigration has NOTHING to do with citizens. I have no problem with people coming to our country to start a new life. Entering it contrary to our laws makes you a criminal. In any other country it is treated as a crime. If Obama or any other politician wants my respect, stand up for US.

"It’s not crazy, it’s not socialism," Obama said of his transportation proposal. "It’s not the imperial presidency – no laws are broken. – Obama

Funny about hat no laws were broken comment. The Supreme Court disagrees..... 0 – 9 Obama... You're 0 – 9 on executive order cases before the court. So yea – laws HAVE been broken and the court found it necessary to rein you in.

The radical republicans and their tea party gangs are digging their own grtave :))))))) With such a demented extreme right, President Obama answer was so courageous and noble 🙂 I am glad I voted for him twice :))))))))))))

If the gop, et al, get away with a trial, george walker bush will also be sued. Why? because the supreme court will get the evidence that walker bush started the policies that now the gopers blame President Obama for. I can hardly wait to seer boehner's angry face when bush is sent to prison 🙂

the more the GOP does, the more stupid they look. They had no answers, too high horsed to work with the president and are trying to distract the public with more stupid stuff which should the public how stupid they think we are. The 1960s politics are over GOP and you haven't kept up. You are a old tired elephant that can't learn new tricks and can't perform the old ones anymore and nobody wants to see them anyway. And inciting the religious right is just creating more chaos.

Not a huge fan of Obama, but I stand with him in his determination to get things done in the face of a Republican Party that doesn't care what happens to the country, how much people suffer, how much things deteriorate as long they can hold onto or increase the power they have. Disgusting.

As for sick and tired. we are sick and tired of being ignore by policticians who are worried about companies and not the public. We lost jobs to oversea under the guiss of free trade. The public has nothing to lose anymore and the GOP wants us to 'stay the course' and who has it benefited up to now. Companies of course who put a little in a round about way into policticians pockets. At least they have a job. Are you saying that the GOP is not 'playing polictics' that is all their doing. If companies have their way, we will all be living like the russians did under czarist russia, living in the back of the place we work with barely enough food and clothing for our families. All this whoop de doo is not going to put a GOP back in the presidency.
