Deval Patrick picks two sites to house undocumented children in MA

(CNN) - Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick proposed two locations in the Bay State to temporarily house undocumented immigrant children who are currently stuck at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Noting the country's tradition of accepting "desperate" children in dire circumstances abroad, Patrick said he had an obligation to meet requests by the federal government to allocate shelter for up to 1,000 children.

"I have come down where I have for two main reasons: love of country and lessons of faith," he said in a press conference Friday.

His decision comes as multiple governors, including Democrats like Patrick, have turned to requests to house children.

Patrick proposed two facilities: Joint Base Cape Cod in Bourne and the Westover Air Base in Chicopee.

Christie: N.J. may consider housing kids from southern border influx

First on CNN: After criticizing White House over unaccompanied minors, Martin O'Malley said don't send them to Maryland site

The locations, he stressed, would be under federal, not state, control, and would provide space for the children to sleep, eat, play and go to school, with an average stay duration of 35 days. He said federal authorities will still need to vet the locations before accepting his proposal.

"It bears remembering that these are children, alone, in a foreign land," he said.

"As a parent and as one who has himself been a stranger in a strange land, I know this will matter."

"We have rescued Irish children from famine, Russian and Ukranian children from religious persecution, Cambodian children from genocide, Haitian children from earthquakes, Sudanese children from Civil War and children from New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina."

He made an apparent reference to the voyage of the St. Louis, a German ocean liner that contained Jews fleeing from Europe in 1939. The passengers were unable to gain entry to Cuba or the United States and had to turn back.

"A good nation is great when we open our doors and our hearts to needy children and diminished when we don't," he said.

Growing emotional, he cited his Christian faith as a reason to host the children.

"Every major faith tradition on the planet charges its followers to treat others as we ourselves wish to be treated," he said.

CNN's Marlena Baldacci contributed to this report.

  1. Say WHAT???

I'm from Massachusetts. HELL NO!! Who's going to pay for all this and where are all these illegals going to be let free, here?! Our taxes are already sky high in this state. Are we now supposed to skip meals to pay for this encouragement and support of illegal activity?

He isn't running for re-election so he can screw over the people of Massachusetts as he wishes. Is there a recall provision in Massachusetts?

  12. NO MAS!!!

How many is Deval Patrick putting up at his house and paying for personally? None? Why not? Time for all the liberals to be forced to walk the walk and force everybody else to do it and to pay for it as well. Where does this clown live? I want to go protest in front of his home, maybe invite myself in and demand to be taken care of, just like these illegals are doing to this country.

THIS is how you quote the Bible, by backing up your quotes with your actions.
I hope my governor, O'Malley, is paying attention and taking notes.
Let's find these children a place elsewhere in Maryland Gov. O'Malley.
We can afford to heed the call of our federal government for assistance with this issue, and we can definitely afford to be PRACTICING Christians and people of faith.

    Unfortunately, no.

Doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Another far-left moonbat would be elected. This is The People's Republic of Massachusetts, after all.

The only difference between Massachusetts and a communist regime is that its citizens are free to leave... which they do in droves. I only remain here because of family roots... which will be gone in short order.

Since I've been a voting citizen here, MA has lost 3 (if not 4, I've lost count) congressional districts, and yet they religiously vote democratic. Einstein called that the the definition of insanity.

I still wonder why you fiscally conservative rwnj have no problem with the costs involved in those 50 votes, let's ignore the fact that it could be 50,000 votes and nothing would change, all their energy, time on this is just fine, grow up. Your prejudices are coming through loud and clear.
