CNN/ORC Poll: Majority say no to impeachment and lawsuit

Washington (CNN) - There’s not a lot of public appetite for a Republican push to sue President Barack Obama, or for calls by some conservatives to impeach him, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Friday morning also indicates that a small majority of Americans do not believe that Obama has gone too far in expanding the powers of the presidency.

Earlier this month, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP's 2008 vice presidential nominee, called for Obama's impeachment, becoming the latest voice on the right to make the suggestion.

But according to the poll, only 35% want Obama impeached, with nearly two-thirds saying the President should not be removed from office.

There's an obvious partisan divide, with 57% of Republicans but only 35% of independents and 13% of Democrats backing a move to impeach Obama.

"Anti-impeachment sentiment is roughly where it was for past presidents - 67% opposed Bill Clinton's impeachment in September 1998, and 69% opposed impeaching George W. Bush when a few Democrats began talking about it in 2006," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

"One reason may be that Americans take impeachment very seriously. Only about one in five say that impeachment is a valid response if Congress is dissatisfied with a president's policies or the way he is handling his job. Nearly eight in 10 say impeachment should be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors," Holland adds.

Senior Obama adviser on impeachment: 'I would not discount that possibility'

The poll's release came one day after the House Rules Committee approved – along a party line vote – a resolution authorizing Speaker John Boehner's lawsuit against the President. The GOP controlled House is expected approve it next week.

Boehner and House Republicans plan to sue Obama over his health care law. They claim he violated the Constitution by circumventing Congress and changing the law's employer mandate on his own.

By a 57%-41% margin, Americans say House Republicans shouldn't file the suit. As with the question on impeachment, there's a wide partisan divide over the lawsuit.

Boehner: Why we must now sue the President

When it comes to expanding the power of the presidency, has Obama gone too far? Forty-five percent say yes, with three in 10 saying the President's actions have been about right, and 22% saying he hasn't gone far enough.

CNN Poll: Obama's numbers not great but holding steady

The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International from July 18-20, with 1,012 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

35% of the hate in this country are the very same people who claim to be good Christains. You are all a bunch of Hypocrites. All you do is complain and make excuses because things can't go your way. Then you are yet still upset to the fact that the president is black which really gets to your very soul. You claim you are not racist, but who are you really fooling. You are only fooling yourselves. Bottom line, you keep thinking this way and you will never get what you want in life. Obama is doing his job, you are against him going his job but you want your country back. Its the same country, it was never taken away. You just couldn't have it your way so you want to sue and criticize, but you bring nothing to the table to solve anything, only complaints. you are nothing but sore losers....

Who are you CNN? FOX news? Your headline could have read 65% oppose impeaching the President. THAT would have brought the negative conservatives to your article anyway. And, though I was not polled, President Obama should NOT be impeached. Geez. Enough!

If the American people refuse to hold Obama responsible for anything . Then there's no way we can hold any president after him responsibly.
To bring up any president before him is just talking points and shows why education is important.
It's also show the democrats faith in Obama to be president.
People that blame and make excuses for there cause will never lead and always fail

Before you believe all the hype, do some research on your own. Reagan, G.W. Bush and Bill Clinton signed into law many more Executive Orders than Obama! Clinton and Reagan more than twice as many, where was the outcry during their presidencies? Yet people will have you believe that Obama is running the government on his own. Congress isn't doing anything, Republicans and Democrats alike are sitting on Capital Hill collecting a paycheck, here is an idea "VOTE". Over the next 4 years let's "Vote" out every incumbent on both sides of the isle. Let's get some new blood and new ideas in both chambers! But quit listening to "CNN" and "FOX" and do your own research. And before you go bashing just the President; get the facts not the bull crap!

  6. A Vote of Confidence

If 35% want Obama impeached, it is pretty obvious that AMERICA IS DISSATISFIED WITH OBAMA AND DEMOCRATS. No wonder, he was voted worst president since WWII, winning by a significant margin. Enjoy the rejection DEMS! More will come in November!

To those who are ranting about the democrats being "socialist" – I challenge you to define what socialism even means. I don't believe it means what you think it means. In fact, I am willing to bet that most of you screaming "socialist" hold many socialistic beliefs yourself. Christianity, for example, teaches us to give away our possessions.

When you look at the body of untruths that POTUS has told and the number of executive actions that he has taken and the fact those E.A.'s have eaten away at the integrity of our Constitional Republic, Impeachment is needed.

The fact we have a feckless Congress does not bode well.

    I am not a racist.

It is very sad to watch how uncivilised people are. All this talk of impeachment, lawsuit is all about hatred. They hate the President because he beat them twice and not once. He can do whatever he likes on "Obamacare". He campaigned for it, people bought his idea elected and re-elected him. Conservatives have no right at all to say anything on how the entire Obamacare is implemented. It is none of their business.

It just goes to show, that with all the talk from the carnival barkers in the GOP, this President would still win another election if that were possible. Try as they may, you can't keep a good man down.

One side knows Obama is perfect. The other side knows Obama is Devil's Spawn. Both do not care about what he does or the results. All they care about is he is "our" or "not our" guy.

Waste of our tax dollars and a waste of Congress time. But, since congress doesn't do anything anyway, it doesn't matter.

joeinnm1 said, "It sad that the first black president this country has turns out to be a total failure."

That's what we get when people elect a president only as a popularity contest instead of looking at their record, judging their qualifications and making a an informed vote. This goes back to the Democrat primary. As much as I would not like HRC to be president, she was hands-down more qualified that Obama.

It was obvious to those who looked at it objectively that Obama was not qualified. And he has done little to try to succeed against those odds since.

Next time look past the teleprompter and find the best candidate.

It is sad the the first black President this country has, a truly accomplished individual who has accomplished a lot of good on behalf of the American people, has been inundated by racist and partisan hatred from the reactionary forces.

No true American patriot would ever compromise with a Kenyan muslim communist. He must be removed from office immediately. We must all stand up for the principles that have made this country what it is today.

"Impeach" = The new empty right-wing buzz phrase

Right along with "Birth certificate, Benghaaazi, Death Panels, Socialist, Elitist, Liberal, Founding Fathers, Straight shooter, etc., etc., etc.

Clue to the right: There are absolutely no grounds for impeachment of Obama. Spend the time developing some sort of agenda to actually help the middle class.

If you ask these people, without prompting, ON WHAT SPECIFIC ISSUE should he be impeached, you'd probably not get more than 5-10% behind a single issue.

People never do like the incumbent.

I don't understand how much more do the people want this obama to do to our country before they impeach him. How much? Is it the people who get the free stuff who want him in office??? Are they so afraid they will have to work. THE THING THEY DON'T REALIZE IS THE AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS IS DYING AND THERE WON'T BE MONEY FOR FOOD STAMPS, WIC, ETC. THE ILLEGALS ARE TAKING US OVER AND DROPPING OUT BABIES SO THEY CAN GET FREE STUFF. THE MAJORY OF BLACK PEOPLE ON SOME TYPE OF ASSISTANCE ... YOU BETTER WATCH OUT ... THE MEXICANS ARE GROWING AND GETTING MORE AND MORE. This man will leave with his hateful family and retire in Hawaii on our dime and continue to laugh at what he has done to our country. why do you think he is doing all these fund raiser at a time when we need a leader.....it's to keep the democratic party in office....sponsored by Mexican, blacks, poor informed voters. most of the liberals in America don't give a dam. just give us our free stuff. well, people, the free stuff will run out. if you would only look at the countries that have socialism and see what happened to them. destruction...no work...no more free stuff. money runs out. middle class dying. rich don't support our government. but unfortunately...more and more illegals...muslim...low informed voters (who really don't give a dam) will feed off the government as long as they can and when it runs out they will brame WHO. look IN THE MIRROR...YOU ARE TO BLAME. IMPEACH, IMPEACH, IMPEACH

Don't Impeach him? Don't sue him? Why, because he's black? What kind of example is he setting for future Presidents? Don't worry, just use the IRS as an intimidation tool against your opponents and then erase all evidence when you get caught, don't protect your borders, lie straight faced to the American people (You can keep your doctor AND your health plan), lie about terrorist plots against our ambassadors for political gain, run guns to the Mexican cartel, race bait all you want and subvert the Constitution all you want – just as long as you are a "First". Obama could get away with murder and he knows it. Pathetic.
