CNN/ORC Poll: Majority say no to impeachment and lawsuit

Washington (CNN) - There’s not a lot of public appetite for a Republican push to sue President Barack Obama, or for calls by some conservatives to impeach him, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Friday morning also indicates that a small majority of Americans do not believe that Obama has gone too far in expanding the powers of the presidency.

Earlier this month, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP's 2008 vice presidential nominee, called for Obama's impeachment, becoming the latest voice on the right to make the suggestion.

zzzz poll

But according to the poll, only 35% want Obama impeached, with nearly two-thirds saying the President should not be removed from office.

There's an obvious partisan divide, with 57% of Republicans but only 35% of independents and 13% of Democrats backing a move to impeach Obama.

"Anti-impeachment sentiment is roughly where it was for past presidents - 67% opposed Bill Clinton's impeachment in September 1998, and 69% opposed impeaching George W. Bush when a few Democrats began talking about it in 2006," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

"One reason may be that Americans take impeachment very seriously. Only about one in five say that impeachment is a valid response if Congress is dissatisfied with a president's policies or the way he is handling his job. Nearly eight in 10 say impeachment should be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors," Holland adds.

Senior Obama adviser on impeachment: 'I would not discount that possibility'

The poll's release came one day after the House Rules Committee approved – along a party line vote – a resolution authorizing Speaker John Boehner's lawsuit against the President. The GOP controlled House is expected approve it next week.

Boehner and House Republicans plan to sue Obama over his health care law. They claim he violated the Constitution by circumventing Congress and changing the law's employer mandate on his own.

By a 57%-41% margin, Americans say House Republicans shouldn't file the suit. As with the question on impeachment, there's a wide partisan divide over the lawsuit.

Boehner: Why we must now sue the President

When it comes to expanding the power of the presidency, has Obama gone too far? Forty-five percent say yes, with three in 10 saying the President's actions have been about right, and 22% saying he hasn't gone far enough.

CNN Poll: Obama's numbers not great but holding steady

The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International from July 18-20, with 1,012 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Raoul – Perhaps reading comprehension is not one of your strengths. 13% of the 35% are DEMOCRATS. I'm pretty sure that those sheep are not watching FOX news. They are watching the Sheep herders on CNN, MSNBC etc... and are still wise enough to realize the BS they are being fed on the Donkey news networks.

Nearly eight in 10 say impeachment should be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors << Interesting in that those who want to impeach Obama are probably conservatives who believe in the Constitution BUT that says that only the crimes are ground for impeachment. That is, impeach Obama for violating the constitution by violating it via impeachment for policies they don't like.

I dare to put out a real poll: if all of congress could be impeached, would you vote 'yes' or 'no'?

I've never been more disgusted with current affairs and politics ever before in my life. It is also insanely irritating that any belief you have has to be attached to one of these two out-dated, dysfunctional parties (D/R) that are no matter how you look at them, they're all bought politicians. If the country is under excessive power from a government, people are not "free". If the country is under excessive power from corporations, people are not "free". These two iconic parties are not doing the job of meeting between. Pointing fingers and especially these appeal to abuse fallacy arguments from both the left and the right from this platform to the politicians themselves is getting us nowhere.

Vote independent and get us out of this hot mess.

Those who voted for impeachment are playing politics to the hilt. Here is a president that ended the republican recession, ended two republican wars, ended the auto industry woes, ended the housing crisis, turn around the unemployment bleeding, and ended the largest recession since the 1930s and passed a much needed health bill to end this is the president people want impeached??? Am I missing something here? AND add to this he accomplished all of this with zero (yes ZERO) support from the republican House and Senate members. Republicans are out of touch with how this country is supposed to be run........you know........once the majority elects a person you are supposed to get behind him/her to build the country. But no so with the republicans. It has been get the president from day one. Truly an anti American way of supporting your country. Oh yes one final point. Look up the terms for impeachment. Sorry to say you won't find anything that this President has done that meets any of this criteria. Bottom line.......start acting like Americans rather than politicians. You are destroying our country with your actions.

It is sad to see that 35% of those polled are so ignorant of what impeachment covers. It is also very sad that the media keeps SPEWING this nonsense. When are they going to get back to ethics, not ratings. Even 10 years ago they would have been pointing out the absurdity of this one time, then let it die the death it needs to. The media needs to get back to "The facts ma'am, just the facts" philosophy.

What a waste of precious time when we should cooperate to get things done. It's almost the end of a presidential term anyhow.

Isn't that roughly the same percentage of Americans that also believe his birth certificate was a fake, the moon landing never happened, humans and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time and that the stork brings babies?

Isn't this more of an indication of the failure of our educational system to teach our citizens the meaning of the words they use and the fact of life then an opinion?

@Rasoul Duck: LOL "his only qualifications as being clean and articulate": and "you hate him for only being black". And he's not even that articulate but you are certainly blind sir. His only qualifications are being a community organizer. He's a liar and a coward. You need to stop watching MSNBC. Obama should face multiple charges. Palin did not! Get your facts straight Obamaton!

Just the other day, a good friend and I were discussing our observations that about 2/3s of all the people we know are 1/3 crazy, and the other 1/3 are about 2/3s crazy. (We like to think we're in the first group, but we're kind of biased.) Very amused to see this poll matches our experience almost exactly.

have to love can spin. on its OWN poll 35% of americans want the president impeached. 35% is not a small number and keep in mind it is a cnn poll. go to fox and have the poll drafted by fox and it would be larger amount. clearly, there is a problem.

Does that 35% have any understanding of what impeachment is? How can things ever change for the better when over 1/3 of our country is so uninformed? It's very discouraging.

Every Friday CNN is consistent with having a negative story about the President! *The President Is The Worst * The President Need To Be Impeach * The President Has Low Poll Numbers and so on and on. I said to my self, let me go to CNN and let me see what negative article they ended the week with. The only reason why President Obama need to be impeach, poll numbers are low is because he is Black. It s been 6 years and you still can't get over it. Let's impeach the Congress CNN for not trying to do anything. NO for everything good for the country and let's make the President look bad. Are there any stories on this. CNN and other haters, let's get pass the hatred and pull out the facts. For your information: The President -passed health reform for millions to afford health care 2. passed the stimulus to save the country from your President Bush fiasco 3. ended the war in Iraq that Bush and Cheney started (that's who needed to be impeach and charged with a war crime- 5000 soldiers dead, 10,000 wounded or maimed/ 1million Iraqis dead) 4. began drawdown of war in afghanistan. 4. found and killed Osama Bin Laden 5. saved the Auto industry 6. save wall street and the banks from going under. 7. killed Gaddafi 8. repealed 'don't ask, don t tell 9. reversed Bush torture policies 10. kicked banks out of federal student loan programs 11. boosted fuel efficiency standards 12. increased support for veterans 13. passed fair sentencing act 14. added 2 females on the supreme court 15. expanded health coverage for children. 16. Added 9.7 million jobs since he been in office 17. signed executive order to ease student loan payments. The list is endless. So CNN your polls are bogus to people who know the truth. And impeach the President because he's doing his job is bogus. Yeah you can impeach him because he's Black. You might just win my vote.

I want to see a poll on how many think John Boehner should be thrown out as Speaker of the House. He is absolutely worthless. Why CNN isn't there ever a poll about that man? He is 3rd in line for the Presidency after all and what on earth has he accomplished in the past 3 1/2 years? A coach can only do so much when his team REFUSES to play. There is 33% of yahoos in the country that wanted Obama impeached BEFORE he even took the oath of office so this poll means nothing!

Anonymous: so essentially they poll dem liberals and fascists and come to this conclusion?
Please remind me, didn't you say the same thing about polls before the last election? The polls are scientifically based, you are not. You can have your own opinion but not your own facts.
