House GOP chairman urges more U.S. engagement in Libya

Washington (CNN) – After intense fighting among warring militias forced the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Libya, one top House Republican criticized the Obama administration's overall policy towards the North African nation.

"I think having removed [Moammar] Gadhafi, the administration sort of took its focus off of Libya and things have been getting worse for quite some considerable time now," Rep. Ed Royce said Saturday in a CNN interview.

“I do think they should be much more engaged on the ground with the factions in Libya," the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee added. "I've tried to encourage some of this with the administration. And I think they’re on the right track, but late into the game in terms of trying to bring factions together and use U.S. leverage in order to try to work this out.”

In 2011, an uprising resulted in Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi's ouster, ending his 42-year rule. Months later, Gadhafi was killed in crossfire after being captured. The events sparked ongoing fighting between armed Libyan factions.

The U.S. evacuated its personnel from the embassy in Tripoli, Saturday. Violent clashes between those Libyan factions, dangerously close to the embassy, prompted serious safety concerns. U.S. officials said its personnel have been relocated and the embassy's operations have been "temporarily suspended" until "the security situation on the ground improves." The staff will continue their work from other locations.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, praised the administration's move to evacuate personnel.

"I think it was very prudent to move our personnel out of there," the California Democrat said on CNN, Saturday. "We have a fierce battle going on between several militias."

Republicans have kept up sustained criticisms of the administration since the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, in violence on September 11-12, 2012 against U.S. government facilities in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

Republican critics have claimed the Obama offered misleading explanations about what sparked the attacks - assertions the administration has steadfastly denied.

Criticizing the President for the status of Libya- a nation we didn't invade, or bomb the place senseless, while their party, Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld not only killed 120,000 Iraqis, turned millions into refugees, wiped out their infrastructure and unleashed a vicious civil war, and ultimately set the milled east alight- including Libya.

Does this mean the GOP is no longer interested in the IRS/immigrants/child invaders/and other recent fantasies? Are we rounding the curve back to Benghazi?

The GOP is crazy and irresponsible.

I wish the GOP could make up it's mind. It is really getting annoying having them vacillate (or flip flop for you nostalgia fans) going back and forth and back and forth on Mr. Obama's foreign policy. To summarize- he cannot be a lawless dictator illegal warrior setting nations afire AND be a feckless, ineffective, lead-from-behind, unmotivated President.

In any event- as wars cost money, and the House won't even pay to fix immigration, or their recent pant-wetter, the VA problem, will they actually fund intervention in Libya? Will they then fund incursions into everywhere else they seem to want to invade/attack on alternating days? As we know the GOP won't DO ANYTHING for America anymore.

Let's bottom line this- Republicans criticizing the President on foreign policy is like an arsonist criticizing fire fighters on their technique. Until the GOP has a real-live solution or plan- they should just shut up.

That's a joke. The GOP made a pig sty of Iraq- have any of those idiots ever claimed ownership of that? Have they even been held accountable for their crimes? We didn't even have a military presence in Libya.
You're lack of perspective is showing.

Let us agree we will intervene in Libya right after Ed's kids join the armed forces.

    What? Eddie has no progeny?

Then he is just another old man wanting to fight a war in which he has no "skin in the game" and young strangers will die.

    So, very, very Republican!

And will the GOP House be fighting this invasion "off the books" AND handing out tax cuts?

We got such stellar results when we did it in Iraq! By all means, let's rush to repeat it in Libya!(moron)!

Obama said Khaddafi had to go and got him killed. Now the country is a terrorist hotbed and and mess. They got our ambassador killed and 3 others. All Obama knows how to do is make messes and disasters and then blame them on others and claim it isn't our problem. Obama and the left have half the world at war right now. And do they accept responsibility and lead? Nope, just more Bush, Cheney, Iraq, blah, blak, lies, lies, irrelevant nonsense, stupidity, lies, blah, blah, blah.....

Nothign we do, with Islamic terror groups is going to change them. The basic one truth no one will face, is that the religion has zero tolerance for any other........which simply means there is zero room for compromise.
