Schumer thinks immigration bill will pass by July 4
(CNN) - Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, part of the bipartisan "Gang of Eight" on immigration reform, predicted Sunday that the Senate will pass his group's bill by July 4.
"We're going to put immigration on the floor by June 10. I predict it will pass by July 4," he said. "We're hoping to get up to 70 votes."

Choice of Holder to lead leak review questioned
(CNN) – Attorney General Eric Holder’s direct involvement in the decision to search a reporter’s e-mail records should bar him from leading a review of how the government investigates national security leaks, Republicans argued Sunday.
The decision to apply for a warrant to search Fox News reporter James Rosen’s private correspondence was vetted at the Justice Department's highest levels, including Holder, a Justice official said last week, although the later decision to issue the warrant was made by a federal magistrate judge.

Schumer to resurrect reporter shield legislation
Washington (CNN) - In the wake of the controversial decision by the Justice Department to subpoena phone records from the Associated Press in a probe of national security leaks, a top Democratic senator said Wednesday he wants to put in place stricter standards for government seizure of media records.
Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York wants to switch those sensitive decisions from the attorney general, who is currently empowered to issue subpoenas to news organizations, to a federal judge who is independent of the executive branch.

W.H. wants to resurrect reporter shield legislation
(CNN) - The White House asked Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to reintroduce reporter shield legislation, White House officials told CNN on Wednesday.
The push comes just a few days after word that the Justice Department seized phone records from the Associated Press as part of a national security leak investigation. The legislation, which passed the Judiciary Committee in 2009 but never advanced, would provide more protection to reporters from penalties for failing to reveal their sources and more protection to protect their phone records.
After Boston, some call for delaying immigration bill
(CNN) – Another senator raised concerns on Sunday about taking up the new bipartisan immigration reform bill following last week's terror attack in Boston. The two suspects - one of whom was killed in a shootout with police, the other is in federal custody - came to the country legally more than a decade ago.
Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana said Sunday that Congress should wait until the emotional reaction to the violence subsides before tackling immigration legislation.

Graham: ‘Ball was dropped’ in probe of Tamerlan Tsarnaev
(CNN) – The federal government messed up following the FBI’s investigation of Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday.
The agency was looking into Tsarnaev’s extremist ties two years ago.

Schumer says death penalty 'appropriate' in Boston case
(CNN) - The death penalty should be applied in the case of Dzhokar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspected of participating in the Boston Marathon bombings, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
"Given the facts that I've seen, it would be appropriate to use the death penalty in this case and I hope they would apply it in federal court," Schumer, D-New York, said on CNN's "State of the Union."

McCain, Schumer feeling 'very good' about immigration bill
(CNN) – Following meeting with President Barack Obama on Tuesday, two of the lead senators on a bipartisan effort to introduce immigration reform expressed confidence about their bill.
"We're feeling very good about this. Things are moving in a very, very good way and the president's support of our proposal, even though he wouldn't fully agree with it, is sort of just the right place to be," Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, told reporters at the White House.
