Obama orders new plans to prepare for climate change

(CNN) - President Barack Obama required federal agencies on Friday to present plans to combat climate change.

An executive order mandated steps to make it easier for communities "to strengthen their resilience to extreme weather and prepare for other impacts of climate change," according to a White House statement.

Gore says climate change deniers melting away

(CNN) – Former Vice President Al Gore said he's optimistic about the future of the climate change debate, arguing Republicans are growing weary of global warning deniers.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Gore said climate change activists are in the process of "winning the conversation," just like activists won the civil rights movement.

Unicorns doled out for climate change deniers

(CNN) – As part of their push to promote President Barack Obama's climate change agenda, the political group formed from his presidential campaign is going after Republican lawmakers who have expressed skepticism of climate change.

The group sent a message on Twitter Tuesday with a photo of a "climate denier award" trophy, topped by a unicorn. The group's volunteers are delivering the statues to lawmakers Tuesday.

Coal companies hit by oversupply, Obama

New York (CNNMoney) - Coal company stocks have taken a hit lately, as a global oversupply and pending climate change rules from the Obama administration weigh on the sector.

The Market Vectors Coal Index ETF is down 17% in the last 30 days. Some individual companies have fared even worse. Shares of Peabody Energy Corporation have plunged nearly 30% from a month ago, as have shares in Yanzhou Coal Mining. Shares in Westmoreland Coal Co. are down about 10%.

Obama reiterates climate change plan

(CNN) - President Barack Obama continued to push his aggressive climate change plan, urging Americans in his weekly address Saturday to contact their representatives and remind them "there is no contradiction between a sound environment and a strong economy."

"The question is not whether we need to act," he said. "The question is whether we will have the courage to act before it’s too late."

Obama says Keystone can't increase carbon pollution

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama made clear on Tuesday that the State Department should approve the Keystone XL pipeline only if it will not increase overall greenhouse gas emissions, and he unveiled a plan for new limits on pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Obama raised the two politically charged issues during an address on second-term environmental priorities that included a plan of executive action, a pledge to lead globally and an appeal for Americans to redouble efforts to combat climate change.

Poll: Many Americans not all that concerned about climate change

Washington (CNN) – As President Obama is expected to lay out his plans for combating global climate change Tuesday, Americans don't seem to be overly concerned about the threat from the environment, according to a new poll.

Americans were far less likely to name global climate change as a major threat to their country compared to international counterparts, according to a new poll spanning more than three dozen countries from the Pew Research Center released Monday.

Obama to tackle climate change in speech

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will announce his plans to "reduce carbon pollution" in a climate change speech next week, the White House announced Saturday.

"There's no single step that can reverse the effects of climate change. But when it comes to the world we leave our children, we owe it to them to do what we can," Obama said in a video released on the White House's YouTube page.

(CNN) - Environmentalists packed several blocks around Washington's National Mall on Sunday, hoping to spur President Barack Obama to take strong measures against climate change.

Allison Spitz, 16, brandished a sign reading "Oil and Water Don't Mix," as she attended her first political demonstration.
