America's history with the flat tax

(CNN) - Current Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich all favor some form of one. Past presidential hopefuls like Steve Forbes and Jerry Brown have advocated one. Noted economists like Milton Friedman have championed the idea. A flat tax - one constant tax rate applied on all income. However, the flat tax was more than just an idea in America's distant past. It was a reality.

New podcast tackles Washington, without the nonsense

Washington (CNN) - Days of caucuses, leadership elections, freshman hellos, "what you thought would happen, did happen" news conferences and a few significant, but not conclusive, votes have kept Capitol Hill staff and reporters scrambling this week.

But aside from scattered House and Senate votes (food safety, unemployment compensation and the Medicare 'doc fix'), the hefty Washington news was elsewhere - in the action by and reaction to the Federal Reserve's latest rescue plan.

Obama to have belated birthday bash

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama may be celebrating his 49th birthday Wednesday without his wife and daughters, but CNN has learned there will be a hush-hush party at the White House on Sunday with close family and friends to make it up to him.

Two top White House aides confirmed the belated birthday bash on the condition of anonymity because the details are a state secret around the corridors of the West Wing.

"There will be some stuff Sunday," a top adviser to the president said vaguely without giving away any of the details.

CNN Radio: Political Notebook

The president is celebrating his birthday without his immediate family because first lady Michelle Obama just arrived in Spain for a planned mini-vacation with the couple's youngest daughter, Sasha, while eldest daughter, Malia, is away at summer camp.
