Emotional Connecticut Gov. rejects more guns in schools

(CNN) - Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy choked up Wednesday when addressing the Newtown elementary school shooting that left 20 students dead, and bluntly rejected the notion of putting more guns in classrooms as protection.

"When it comes to preventing future acts of violence in our schools, let me say this: more guns are not the answer," he said in his state of the state address. "Freedom is not a handgun on the hip of every teacher and security should not mean a guard posted outside every classroom."

Connecticut governor wants tougher federal laws

(CNN) - Two days after telling more than 20 families they had lost loved ones in one of the nation's deadliest school shootings, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy on Sunday urged stricter gun control legislation at the federal level.

"These are assault weapons. You don't hunt deer with these things," Malloy said on CNN's "State of the Union." "I think that's the question that a lot of people are going to have to resolve in their own minds: Where should this line get drawn?"

Calls for renewed discussion on gun violence intensify after school shooting

(CNN) – In the wake of one of the country’s deadliest mass shootings in Connecticut and the ensuing national conversation over U.S. gun laws, political figures are putting pressure on Washington to take serious action to prevent such tragedies.

Hours after the shooting, President Barack Obama wiped tears from his eye and said "our hearts are broken today,” calling for “meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of politics.”

Connecticut governor questions GOP's patriotism

Williamsburg, Virginia (CNN) - Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, a Democrat, questioned the patriotism of Republicans on Friday, saying their sole mission is to defeat President Barack Obama instead of passing meaningful legislation.

"To be a Republican today, you have to deny reality and embrace a message that has no other purpose than to elect their candidate as President of the United States," Malloy said at a press conference with other Democratic governors in Williamsburg, the site of the National Governors Association annual meeting.
