In Iowa, Rand Paul makes case for more compassionate GOP

OKOBOJI, Iowa (CNN) - Sen. Rand Paul brought his recent crusade for a more compassionate Republican Party to the northwest part of Iowa on Monday, appealing to a crowd of social conservatives at a fundraiser for Rep. Steve King.

The Kentucky Republican made his push for sentencing reform in the criminal justice system, the laws of which "disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics," Paul said.

"Until you show that you care about them and that you want to do something about them, you're not going to win," he told the audience. "So if we want to win, we're going to have to change."

Climate group attacks Ernst on tax pledge, not climate

Updated 4:40 p.m. ET, 7/30/2014

(CNN) - NextGen Climate, a Super PAC backed by liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, is dedicated to "act politically to avert climate disaster and preserve American prosperity."

But its latest attack ad is all about taxes.

The group says the television commercial, which was released Wednesday, will air in three major media markets across Iowa. But the spot never once mentions climate change or the environment. Instead the ad focuses on the Americans for Tax Reform's "no new taxes" pledge Iowa GOP Senate nominee Joni Ernst signed.

(CNN) - After first declining to take a position on the decision earlier this month, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday he backs the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby in its case against Obamacare.

Christie: N.J. may consider housing kids from southern border influx

(CNN) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blamed the Obama administration for the influx of immigrant children at the southern border, but didn't rule out the prospect of accepting children in New Jersey on a case-by-case basis.

"I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that," Christie told reporters in Marion, Iowa, where he campaigned for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad.

2016 hovers over Christie Iowa trip

(CNN) - Chris Christie's jam packed swing through Iowa on Thursday is advertised as being all about the 2014 midterm elections.

But the visit by the Republican governor of New Jersey and potential GOP presidential contender has plenty of 2016 implications, as Christie tries to get beyond the bridge controversy back home in the Garden State that's diminished his political standing.

Longing for a win, GOP gives Senate hopeful a big microphone

Washington (CNN) - If you're a national political party salivating over the prospect of winning a seat that's long been in your opponent's hands, what should you do?

One strategy: give your candidate a huge megaphone.

Enter the Republican National Committee, Iowa GOP Senate nominee Joni Ernst - and an address heard by millions around the country.

On Saturday, Ernst delivered the weekly Republican address. The candidate pushed familiar conservative themes: smaller government, opposition to Obamacare and strong national security. Ernst also played up her outsider status and pushed populist themes.

Rick Perry's busy summer schedule

(CNN) - Rick Perry's headed back to South Carolina Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's the third trip by the longtime Republican governor of Texas to the Palmetto State in the past year. Perry, who launched a failed campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, is not running for re-election this year and instead is considering another bid for the White House in 2016.
